Don't know anything about the E3 demo, but the lvl cap was lvl 15 (haven't played in a while, till just yesterday) and getting their took a pretty while, about 2 weeks of casual to hardcore gaming.

For the E3 event all characters will be locked at level 15 from the moment you create them. About 5 weeks ago all of the characters were locked to that level, and we started testing the areas that will be in this demo.
SpiritWalker,
You must of taken an extended break ;) New characters are automatically lvl 15 now.
How does that work with items? Do you start with pre-equipped items, or do you start with an amount of gold?
And how about skills? Do you start with a good selection?
So are you guys saying there is no experience. We start level 15 and stay there?

There's experience, but you don't increase in levels.

Not to go into too much detail ;) but you will start with some armor and a weapon. Everything else (including gold - which is scarce) you will have to find, trade or buy.
Since you will start already with 2 professions (I do believe that you will have access to all 6 professions), you will have a full compliment of 8 skills in total. 2 are common (resurect signet and healing signet) to all professions, and the others are distributed between your primary and secondry profession.
You do earn exp, however currently it is not enabled for leveling. To learn new skills you need to fufil the requirements. They are:
1) have a skill point
2) have the gold to train the skill (should be 15, but may have changed)
3) have a skill gem.
Aquiring skill gems can be done via a few methods. One is by finding or trading for it, another is to buy the gem from a vendor (can be quite expensive - as you need some gold to train/learn the skill as well), or you can gamble it from a specific npc in the game.
You get skill points by gaining a specific amount of exp (doesn't really take long) and by completing missions (you get a free skill point for the first time you complete a mission) for a decent amount of exp.
Gold can be quite hard to come buy.
That is a big hit to my egarness. But still... hmm... its very disappointing and i think a bad move on arena's part. It may cause a bad perception by shallower players. Also this must mean that all missions will be close in difficulty and thus there cant be too much variety. I was expecting a good 3 days worth of play but it now seems that wont be so :(
Well at least ill be able to try out a few different prof combos.

Actually, I think you will be quite delighted to see how it works, even with locked characters. Never have I felt that I needed to play in order to get the rewards of the game, and still become competitive. Rather, I play and the rewards come at an enjoyable pace; and this is from playing the game with locked level 15 characters.
The emphasis isn't on time spent playing. Take many, many games for example? Seriously how long do you have to play the game to be competitive against other players? Diablo 2 requires a heck of alot of time to get the gear to build a competitive dueler, and many other games are similar in that regards. What the emphasis is on is HOW skilled YOU are as a player and as a team (teamworks plays a very important role in the game), and this shows very well in the game. I've seen teams that work together poorly fail miserably, whilst other teams who worked well together complete maps with ease.
On release, players won't be able to play in pvp games until they've all reached a specific point in the game. This point in the game doesn't take too long at all, and all characters after this point are considered rather equal in terms of power. Playing longer after this point just means you have more skills to pick from, but since you can only bring 8 skills into a mission there isn't much of an advantage.
The thing i dont understand is how does a character become stronger. I mean there is a very large part of mmorpgs which is the character advance ment. And by having no levels it means you cant get statistically stronger nor can u get stronger through items as they too depend on stats.
I do understand how the game can be fun without it but still it seems and intergral part of a mmorpg, well at least to me, and it wil be in the final version so it must have soem bearing.
I guess ill have to wait and see.
I really like the idea of starting at lvl 15... would be nice to be able to move up in levels, but I'm guessing you cannot due to it being alpha... which I'm fine with... I just want to play the game! I want to see what the gameplay is like!
As for how levels matter... I'm a bit confused about that too. Perhaps they are relying on more of a feel in advancement with housing/castles/etc.?

don't get me wrong, on release you will gain levels and get a small life bonus, a skill point and 5 attribute points (which effect a specific line of skills). For E3, though - its just a demo of a small selection of the world. The areas where we have been testing for the past month and a half are designed for characters at level 15 (or thereabouts)
Most damage will come from your skills, and more so how you use those skills.
What ArenaNet is aiming to do is eliminate the powercurve so that all characters are on equal footing and can compete at an equal level. Alot of the grind from leveling, camping etc common to many MMO's is eliminated, and there is little, if any downtime to the game.
Yeah that's what I hear.. but what about helping the player feel he is making advances?
What I'm getting at is... if they have very small advances in leveling (like 5 HP per lvl), then people may feel it isn't worth it to play.
Though, that won't be me. :)

Lol, I still had 400 gold or so ;) :D
"Extended break", pretty much, when I played much I had time to play, I have been very very busy with making money the last 1,5 month or so :p

well there is methods of gaining gold quickly, though selling items in demand to vendors, but those prices vary, depending on demand and supply.
Based on how much gold drops however.....it is quite scarce :)

Damn, that just cleared up lot of my questions...but still one remains.
Items: is there tons of diff. items/equipment in the game to compliment your character to make you "unique" other than your play style? If so, are there different classes of items/equipments, how easy do you think it would be for people playing for three days to come by them?

NOTE TO EVERYONE: This is just an ALPHA
the game is far from completion, and this is just a tiny demo... so don't think that everything said about this alpha is what's going to be in the release version of the game...
on a lighter note, i've read many times now that armor and weapons will be customizable in appearance... so don't fret about that ;)

well, dont really know how much i am allowed to reveal, but the ability to make your character look unique is definitely there. and equipment, there is "enough" so to speak :D
