I want to set up something so my brother and I can talk to each other while we play. I've never messed with this before so forgive my ignorance. Where should I start? If I have to pay, I'll probably skip it because it's just a nice-to-have. I also need something that doesn't hog computing power or bandwidth while we are playing the game. My computer is more of an artifact than some of the stuff you find in the game.
Thanks!
Ventrilo and teamspeak are both very good solution.
Google the name to find out how to install them.
Personally I used ventrilo because the codec sounds better for me (voice quality).

2 people? If it's just you and your brother you could just use the phone right? That wouldn't take computer bandwidth at all...

Normally, I would recommend Skype or YIM voice chat, but both are resource hogs and will crash your maching, or even effect your gaming experience.
Team Speak is excellent for low-resource use, though the quality of the voice is very poor, even in its highest setting. But, it will work for what you're after. Perhaps the one downfall is that it costs, so if you're a member of a guild, see if you're allowed to use that server.

My boyfriend and I use MSN messenger and use the video conversation option (which is webcam + audio) but you can alternatively do just audio or just webcam. We find it works well. Sometimes MSN is a little finicky, but more often than not it works well. We use video conversation during GW :happy05:

I was just about to jump in and say the same thing but you beat me to it snow. ;)
If its just 2 people I use msn because its always open anyway.

visit the teamspeak website and download the Server side client, simply install and run it, its a little applet that sits on the windows tray and you'll never notice its there:) simply tell the other person the ip of the server and connect using the client side of the programme :)

yeah...
doesn't affect you, but a downside of this is that the server isnt up when your computer is off(for a guild), and the server can only hold 8 people(for a guild)
basically its perfect for you =)

Skype doesn't crash my computer or effect my gaming experience. I use Skype a lot while playing games and it works just fine for me. But I guess if you have a very slow computer, it could effect your gameplay.

"Google Talk" is a free voice-over-net service that's easy to download and free to use. Go to google.com, and click on "more". Download Google chat first, then google talk. Ultra clear, zero lag, no dropped calls, and ZERO lag. Did I mention there's ZERO LAG?
The only issue I have with it is that its only useable between 2 people at a time, but that sounds like it won't be a problem for you and your brother. Have fun!
teamtalk is good one, it contains client and server in same software
it's available at http://www.bearware.dk/
