View Full Version : Kaineng Center: Mysterious Chest
In Kaineng Center, there's a locked place with lots of chests inside. On the other side of the gate, there's a chest that looks like it's breathing, and has some golden glow inside.
The room looks like it's some storage room (Xunlai?), but what's that chest?

Based on what we know about the Xunali system of storage around Tyria, as in, how you can access your storage box from anywhere anytime, so long as there is an Agent there, I'd say the warehouse is the hub of the Xunali Corporation, where all of our stuff is stored in one of those boxes. That shiney box in the center is the "magic" box that allows us to access any of the other boxes at anytime from anywhere.
This is undoubtably the Xunali Warehouse though, as NPCs in the area reference it, and there is a group of Xunali right outside.

I'm gonna have to take my crowbar down there sometime...
Hmm. I saw this chest, and immediately related it to an in game quest. One where you go to Kaineng Docks and talk to a number of people who had some unusual cargo...

The thing is, the quest you are thinking of involved five 10 foot tall Fire Golems captured from the Ring of Fire Island; they couldn't have possibly fit in one of those crates. At least, not by my reckoning...

Yeah I saw those and I figured it had something to do with the Xunlai or perhaps a special casket for ritualists based on something I read in the prima guide. I will have to go back and check it out.

Give how much work the Xunlai do, and how much they need to store, there is no way those chests can work unless they are bigger on the inside.

The box is a reference to the final scene of "Raiders of the Last Ark". It's one of those inside jokes, one of the many references in Guild Wars. You can't access the box in any way though.

Thats what I thought when I first saw it, the racks and racks of boxes and that scence from raiders of the lost ark. I wasn't sure it was meant as a joke like that, but if so thats pretty cool, it's nice to see game designers having a sense of humor.

To be perfectly honest, that scene from the movie is also what I thought of, but I try to keep things lore-related in the game. It certainly wouldn't be the first pop-culture lore-related reference placed in the game though.

Im agreeing with Quintus Antonius. I think the glowing chest is a "Admin" chest that alows the Xunlai the abilty to remove items from the chests without the owners permission(basicaly if the chests are used for illegal purposes such as smuggleing) You realize that there must be over 1,000,000 chest for each player in guild wars, that means that theres probly more than just this one storage area.(otherwise maybe theres multiple floors?)
Only problem i have is WHERES THE GUARDS?? are my items being left secure by a simple metal gate? anyone with a Dwarven keg can walk into it blow the door and make off with several K of gold and items! Its a good thing all I use my vault for is item transfer and crafting material storage..

That's a good point, and I'd propose that normally there are guards. However, with assassination attemps on the Emperor, the plagueborns and Shiro causing trouble, and the recent gigantic influx of refugees over the past two centuries, I'd say that protecting foreigners crafting materials and green items is the last thing the Canthan Imperial Guard is worrying about. All the guards have probably been assigned to other areas to aide in the current crises going on in Cantha.

It seems to me that the Xunlai not only watch over the storage of adventurers, but they also watch over the cargo that comes in at the docks. That's what it kind of looks like to me, one big cargo vault.
Barcardi The Cat
21-05-2006, 12:35
I wondered about this and my frist thought was, that it was a storage area for the cargo that comes from the dock. It has to be stored somewhere and that city is a port town. If you go into any port town you see warehouses everywhere. I still tried to get into it from every angle though.

It almost seems like they renamed the old flesh golems of the Fire Islands to fire golems since the flesh golem produced by animate flesh golem is nothing like the flesh golems of Tyria, and now suddenly Tyrian flesh golems appear in Cantha with the name "fire golem".

Does anybody else have the impression that the monsters in that quest were changed at the last minute? When I first picked up that quest, I was of the idea that I was going to face some Burning Titans, or at least a Mahgo Hydra. Imagine my surprise when I went up against Flesh Golems that don't even USE fire. The Captain you talk to as part of the lead-up quest mentions the 'monstrosities burning my ship from prow to stern'. How could they do that if they don't even use any fire skills?

Working towards grandmaster, and yes, agreed! The first thing that caught my eye was the glowing chest and that triggered memories of raiders of the lost ark!
It's the first glowing agent chest I have ever seen, but then its slightly open and we never get to see the other agents actually open their chests (me thinks?).
But why IS this one open? Surely a storage box in well...a storage room would be shut, unless someone has been having a bit of a pry?
I must confess, I was in a hurry to make sure I had the 0.1% and move on so didn't stop and chat to NPC's for clues.
I will go back tonight and have another looky, PS was not aware it was even the agents "base" until posted here lol :)

I totally agree. I wasn't completely sure what I was going up against, but I figured it was either a burning titan or one of the various fire monsters of the Fire Islands. Those flesh golems, while big and nasty looking, were rather unimpressive.
At any rate, I doubt that quest has anything to do with the chest. It will be interesting in Chapter 3 now that the Xunali Agents aren't so mysterious now.

It would have been nice to have fought Titans(and given GW:F players a tase of ch1) but it would have been a story nightmare.. titans are locked away agian. and I dont exspect them to return.

Not really. The Door of Komalie was sealed again after you defeated the Lich, but the Titans which had already escaped prior to that were still loose in the world (just look at the Titan quests). I would have found it perfectly acceptable that there were still a few free Titans roaming about the world.
False Visage
25-05-2006, 11:58
To add to Zaxares' idea we have no knowledge if Titans can reproduce. They can certainly break down into smaller version when composed of ash or ice but if they can truly reproduce that'd also create more of them.
Quintus Antonius
25-05-2006, 21:44
Well, breaking down into smaller, yet still autonomous, parts is still reproduction. It is known as fragmentation.
Even though we destroy most of the Titans, it is possible that they could break down even more than we have already seen. If this is the case, they may be able to enter a larval state and evade seeking eyes until they are able to repopulate.

Perhaps Dr Who's coming to Factions, as a Police Phone Box might look a bit odd in Kaineng, but a glowing storage box containing a 25ft Folded Up Fire Golem is a normal everyday occurence it seems, and trouble follows him around wherever he goes.

Anyway as someone mentioned its all likely a hint at Raiders of the Lost ark, the big storeroom and the bright light coming out of the ark itself.
Ingame though, those boxes are clearly magical to fit so much stuff in, you reach in and it knows whats yours. Regardless of the box or where you are, it just knows.

Me,Malus, and Zayren (people I know in-game) noticed that Malus could dance through the gate to enter the room of the glowing chest. We then set off to Kaineng and he danced through. He then noticed something and told us to hit Z we did and we saw this:

We got to see what was on the other side of the gate thanks to Malus the Assassin and what he stumbled upon.

The 'fire titan' quest (which has nothing to do with fire titans) is the final in a line of quests that you get from the Emperor's Hand. It starts off by getting a quest from Guildmaster Luan to warn the Emperor's Hand of an assassination attempt. Just follow the quest chain from there.

Golden Glow + box = Pulp Fiction?
They had a little suitcase in the movie, of which we do not see the content, but it had a golden glow. However, in the movie, it is again a reference to an old belief that it is the soul of Marcellus (their boss), who had his soul removed through his neck (he wears a bandage in his neck).

Look, it could be anything, but some of these theories are getting out there now.
We have to, as researchers, keep this in the context of the game. That means thinking logically and scientifically what the purpose of the box in with respect to its location and through making parallels with objects of similar function.
I still believe this is the Xunlai "master chest", that is, the chest that they put things in to ship them to storage chests everywhere around the world. Think about it:
1) It's in the center of the room, full of storage chests of all sizes.
2) It glows, unlike any other chest.
3) Storage can be accessed anywhere on Tyria at anytime simply by accessing a similar chest.
4) It is in the center of a warehouse that obviously contains most, if not all, of the objects in storage in various storage chests.

I sort of think the glow is just to attract people to it so they can die a horrible death while the agents laugh...because look why would you put a GLOWING chest in the middle of a room for everyone to see, logically to attract people.

Well the Xunlai agents store all sorts of things that comes in from the docks I think. So many of these goods could include powerful magical items. Perhaps some powerful necromancer left his or her luggage in there.

also, yeah i agree that it does seem thta this chest is some kind of master chest that can teleport items around the world. but also, going back to the thing about the fire golems, surley they could fit in there, as the players can carry around so much stuff after they apply magical runes to their travel bags. its possible to hold 45 large wepons if you use all the space available

I didn't even realize I had been banned for my joke in this thread. Funny to come back to it a month later and see that.
Anyway, I feel like this room is probably the central hub of the Xunlai network. The fact that the Xunlai seem heavily Asian-influenced suggests they originate from Cantha, and the capital of Cantha seems like the best place to base an operation like this.
I think it's worth noting what happens to the chest you retrieve for the Xunlai quest in Kaineng City. You don't take it into your inventory, no; it dissapears into thin air! Which leads me to the following conclusion:
If this room/building is the headquarters of the Xunlai trade network, then it is within the realm of possiblity that this chest is the "Master" chest from which all other Xunlai chests derive their magic (the ability to hold infinite capacity that can be accessed from anywhere in the world, just to name a few). Having been imbued with amazing storage properties, this is the actual chest where all of your items are really stored when you give them to an agent and all other chests in the world are merely gateways to this one.
The other chests you see in the room are extra "Gateway" chests that are ready to be deployed when Xunlai agents are sent to new towns and outposts that pop up around the world. When you locate the stolen chest in the quest described at the beginning of this post, the Xunlai are able to recall it using the "Master" chest.
I thought it was kind of cool when I stumbled upon it, and took it as a reference to raiders of the lost ark. The storage system explanation also works for me, but my gut says it was meant as a reference to that movie.
Lord Zilver

I think it referres to the Raiders of the lost ark. In the desert of the prophecies campaign, the Arid sea if my memory serves me right there is a "ancient weapon" that looks very much like the ark of the covenant in the movie as well.

I caution you all, the Xunlai are not our friends. They are working towards a dark goal which none of us here can tell, quitely behind the scenes they gather items of power unto themselves. Thier ultimate purpose is unclear but be assured, it has dire consequences for us all. Beware the golden chest, fore it contains a dark and terrible power.
Storage: empty spaced used to contain items for your convenience? Or foul treachery and fated distruction?
