View Full Version : The Ultimate Expedition: Update the Pet Beastiary

My friends, you have always impressed me with your abilities in the field of lore research and development. It is because of this that I am coming to you with our most important task thus far: updating the GWO beastiary.
For too long, the beastiary on the main page as been lacking. It still has the location of pets from the Beta Weekends. As the Lore Forum, and the most driving force of Guild Wars lore on the internet, it is up to us to update this beastiary.
What I need is the following:
A list of all tamable creatures in game from both Cantha and Tyria.
A list of creatures broken down by location (ie Echovald Forest, Pre-Searing Ascalon, Crystal Desert, Underworld, etc...
The specific location of each creature (ie Old Ascalon, The Wilds, Haiju Lagoon, etc...)
Level of animal at specific locations
Type of damage done (piercing, blunt, or slashing)
So, here's an example:
Name: Moa Bird
Region: Post-Searing Ascalon, Tyria (In the event the animal is in more than one region, such as the Black Bear, list both)
Location(s): Old Ascalon (there are many more, and they should all be listed, but for the sake of brevity, this is the only one I'm putting)
Level: 5
Dmg Type: Slashing
We will also need screenshots of each animal.
When all information is discovered, checked, double-checked, and confirmed to be 100% accurate, I will compile it and post a sticky topic with all the new information, giving credit to all parties who contributed.
This is a great service, and a chance for our work to really be recognized. All are welcome to contribute, but if you do contribute, please make sure your contributions are accurate. If you cannot contribute all of the information above, that is fine, this is a group effort, so we will all help with our own information.
I have faith in our abilities to do this, don't let me down.
I'll start off with the 4 I have, but I won't be able to post screens (at work).
Name: Black Moa
Region: Echovald Forest
Location(s): Ferndale (will only appear at the conclusion and after completion of the Black Moa quest, given in House zu Helzer)
Level: 20
Dmg Type: Slashing
Name: Dune Lizard
Region: Crystal Desert
Location(s): Scattered throughout the Crystal Desert explorable areas
Level: 5
Dmg Type: Piercing
Name: Reef Lurker
Region: Jade Sea
Location(s): Can be found as early as Pongmei Valley. Appears most numerously in Jade Sea explorable areas.
Level: 5
Dmg Type: Piercing
Additional Note: May be found in both Blue and Red shell colors.
Name: Tiger
Region: Throughout Shing Jea Island and outside Kaining City/Jade Sea/Echovald Forest on the main isle of Cantha
Location(s): Can be found as early as Sunqua Vale, outside of Shing Jea Monastery. Also found in Pongmei Valley and "grassy" areas surrounding the northwestern coast of the Jade Sea.
Level: 5
Dmg Type: Slashing

Here's a screenshot of the Black Moa:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/lavawingzero/blackmoa.jpg
I've started on Cantha, and I can have most of it done in probably about a week. So far all I have is a Tiger, but it didn't take too long.
I can't do the Prophecies pets because unfortunately for some reason I deleted all of my Prophecies Characters. I will also need confirmation on the damage types dealt by them - I don't have the funds to change my armour type, let them attack me while charming, and then compare the damage etc.
Here's what I have on the Tiger:
Name: Tiger
Region: Shing Jea Island and Kaineng City, Cantha
Location(s): Sunqua Vale, Panjiang Peninsula, Jaya Bluffs, Haiju Lagoon, Pongmei Valley
Level: 3, 15
Dmg Type: Unknown

Name: Crab
Region: Jade Seas, Cantha
Location(s): Boreas Seabed
Level: 20
Dmg Type: Unknown
http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/9154/crab4xi.th.png (http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/9154/crab4xi.png)
I do have info on the Phoenix and the Black Moa, but I'm surrently gathering screenshots.

Good job so far! When listing locations, please do what Santax did and list specific explorable areas, as some people may not be familiar with climatology or geology of areas and names are a much better directional indicator.
Thank you for your contributions HBTD, and for the screenshot, aldarionteluvetar.
Keep up the good work.

Shoot, I tried to get this in so I could edit my old post -- the quality was kinda bad on the first screenshot of the black moa, so I saved it at a slightly higher quality (my anti-aliased screenshots show up black).

Just an additional request/reminder:
Don't forget Tyria! Our goal is to get information on every pet known in both Cantha and Tyria at this time. You don't have to do it all yourself either, just contribute what you have/know and you are already doing your part.
This hasn't come up yet, but just a heads up, I want this topic to remain information deposit only. Please keep chat to a minimum. It's okay to use this to communicate and organize data, but try not to "chat" too much. Thanks!
I posted a list of animals in a prior post. I believe I hit them all, but if I didn't please post and point it out. The list is a good reference if you are wondering what we need.

Sorry, the only way I could get a screenshot was if it was attacking me, if anyone else would like to get a better one that's fine by me. (I'm not that great at snapping moving things.)

One more thing, and this is VERY important.
Under no circumstances should you ever take anything from another site. Pictures and information must come from your own in-game experience only! I'm sure no one would ever do that, but we cannot steal information that other's have gathered, that's plagiarism and is a permabannable offense. Don't do that to yourself, and don't cut the rest of us short by being lazy and stealing.
So once again: Do not take information from anywhere else.

To find out what kind of damage the pets do, we could have someone charm each one, have 4 others roll an Assassin PvP character, with 1 person using an armor with 70 AL, another with the +15 against Slashing, another with Piercing, and finaly one with Blunt.
Have the Beastmaster attack the 70 AL target, to get a constant. Perhaps record 100 strikes, and find an average, or the amount of hits it took to kill them. Then attack the other 3 targets in turn, recording as you go.
A monk would help keep them alive if you opt for the 100 strike one.
Another option, that could take the place of the Piercing Assassin, is a Warrior with "Shields Up!"
To attack them, I say we get all 5 (possibly a Monk, too) to meet in 1 Guild Hall. Then have the Beastmaster create a Scrim Team of 1. The rest form a team of 4 (or 5.)
This level of organization is best undertaken by a Guild, and I don't think many in my Guild would be too receptive to this. I would, however, stand for testing if you need me. Put The Stiehl on your friends list, as I am often on other characters.
(PS: As of now, I just took your word on the Tiger's damage, Quintus.)

There is some information on each type of damage in the Ranger Forum. Since it is a GWO Forum, feel free to use that. I know that all the cat-type pets do slashing, as well the wolf types. The warthog does blunt, and the dune lizard does piercing.
Here (http://forums.gwonline.net/showthread.php?t=346270) is a link to the GWO Ranger Pet FAQ, credit to Zero and anyone else who contributed to that thread. It has the damage types listed.

Thanks. It mentioned Cats, and Birds, but no Crabs. Since Crabs would most likely be Slashing or Piercing, I went and attacked a Crab with no armor on. It was doing 6-7 damage to me. I then used "Shields Up!" and it continued to do 6-7 damage to me. Therefore I conclude Crabs do Slashing damage.
EDIT: This is something actually quite different, but the 'Edit' button was still availiable, and I know Mods hate double posting.
I had heard rumors that while the Black Moa spawns during the quest he's so predominent in, he also actually spawns after you complete it too. So, as I had finished the quest already, and even tamed him before, I went out to take a look. It's confirmed, he does spawn out there even after you beat it. (By the way, he spawns in the same spot)

Sorry about the double post, but it was too late to edit. Anyway, cranes can be found on Shing Jea Island (in Haiju Lagoon) and in Pongmei Valley on the Canthan mainland; they are level 3 in both areas. (I'm sure they can be found in many other places as well, but this is as far as I've gotten.) Level 5 reef lurkers can be found in Pongmei Valley as well.
Level 15 variants of the Crane (called Elder Cranes) also spawn in Pongmei Valley and in Nahpui Quarter (Explorable), but they are usually charmed by the enemies in the area and you won't get a chance to capture them.

Thank you for the continued contributions. Keep them coming folks, we are almost there. What we need now is for someone to go around Tyria and Cantha and find exact locations where each animal can be found. Is there anyone who is willing to do this?
Also, we need the rest of the pictures and data on the remaining animals.

I just wanted to say, that's an amazing screenshot. Congrats for taking it, the tiger looks really cool in it.
Level 15 variants of the Crane (called Elder Cranes) also spawn in Pongmei Valley and in Nahpui Quarter (Explorable), but they are usually charmed by the enemies in the area and you won't get a chance to capture them.
I know this is a bit out of the scope of this research, but I think it would be good to list if it's possible or not to tame those pets before the enemies do so (just so people who want those know whether it's worth the effort or not). Maybe it would also be good to mention how the Tyrian pets grow as they evolve, while the Canthan ones don't?

Melandru's Stalker
Presearing: Regent Valley (near the statue of Melandru, center of the map)
Postsearing: Old Ascalon (west and northwest of the map)

Alright, with the help of Blazing Liger, I have compiled all the information you have helped us gather, as well as information she and I gathered on our own. The result is a nearly complete index of all the tamable pets on the plant Tyria. I must say, I am very impressed.
Still, before I can declare this finished and post the first edition of the pet index, there is information I still need. I hope you can get it quickly so that we can finish this.
Information Still Needed:
Picture of the Black Widow
Names of explorable locations where the Warthog can be found in the Maguuma Jungle and Kryta
Picture of the Phoenix
That's it folks, just those few things and it is done. The big one is the Warthog locations. I need someone to run around Kryta and the Maguum Jungle and find all the locations Warthogs can be found. The other two are just quick pictures which I'm sure someone can provide easily.
Good work everyone, this will be the definitive pet index when it's done. I look forward to seeing your results, keep up the excellent work!
I don't know how to post screenshots Quintus, but if you tell me, I would be more than happy to take a screenshot of one!

To post a screenshot, go to http://imageshack.us and upload you image. Use the code they give you for forums and paste that in a response here. Viola! You have one screenshot, ready to go.
Blazing Liger

In addition to Ettin's Back, warthogs can be found in Sage Lands, Silverwood, Reed Bog, The Falls, and Tangle Root.

Thanks to the information provided by Blazing Liger, who I know spent two (almost complete) days scouring the Maguuma Jungle for Warthogs, the profile for the 'hog is complete.
All we need now is screenshots for the last two animals--the Black Widow and the Phoenix.
Those should be easy to get. If someone has a Black Widow pet, please take a picture of it, the same for the Phoenix, or if anyone happens to be playing Raiju Palace and see's a Phoenix, grab a screenshot for us please.
This is almost complete, that's all we need.

OK, so it's the larger, stationary, non-tameable version of the Phoenix by the Emperor. It is pretty though.
Quintus Antonius
16-06-2006, 20:36
That will do, it looks exactly the same as the tamable version.
If someone wants to post a actual tamable phoenix picture though, I'd prefer that, however, if we don't get one by the time someone submits a picture of the Black Widow, I will just use this picture.

This was the best pic of a black widow I could get. Also,it was trying to kill me along with some other Kurzicks in Fort Aspenwood...
Anyway,here's the pic.

Yeah, the problem with that is all the blue in the picture. Thanks for the snapshot, Leon, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to use it as you can't really see much with the blue aura, healthbar, and target navigator. I appreciate the effort though, and understand the situation. I'll make an appeal to the Zoo Crew and see if any of them have a Black Widow pet they can snapshot.
