Anyone know if there are dire lurkers that can be tamed? or if its even all that big of a deal over the elder one that can be gotten. I know at least one of the tigers can be tamed as dire but I don't recall where it was. Some of the other pets as well from cantha may have tameable dire too. I'm just experimenting with the pets right now so this is mainly why I'm wondering.

Can someone list the differences in the Hearty, Dire, Elder classes of animals for FYI in this thread? (and FMI)

There is a Pet FAQ in the Ranger Guides section of the Ranger profession forum that lists the specifics of attack type and evolution types, as well as how to tell them apart and the differences.
This Pet Index is simply a tool for reference of where to find the pets.

Furthermore, since why didnt you just edit your original post? i cant believe how strict some of these fansites are about posts. watch me get banned for this one.

The Index is more or less complete, there is little left to contribute until new pets are discovered.
That said, if you have something to contribute, by all means feel free to contribute it. If not, then I'm not exactly sure what you are asking/criticising.
Furthermore, since why didnt you just edit your original post? i cant believe how strict some of these fansites are about posts. watch me get banned for this one.
I'm not sure if you noticed, but this is the Lore Forum. We operate differently than the other forums at GWO. Instead of editing original posts (as this would undoubtably cause conflicts in subsequent debate and discussion), we release revised editions of research articles just as any legitimate scientific body does.
If you are asking why you can't edit your original posts, it is because people would abuse this. Someone would present an argument and then be proven wrong, but instead of admitting they are wrong, they could just go back and change their post and pretend they don't know what the person was talking about. Worse yet, someone would flame, and change it before a moderator or administrator could review it.
The rules are here for the benefit of everyone, and I feel they are quite fair. As for getting banned, you haven't done anything wrong, and as long as you follow the rules, you have nothing to worry about.
Now, to avoid further deviation from this topic, if you have any further questions on the rules or policies of GWO, please either PM a moderator or administrator, or post your question in the proper forum.

It appears that this thread is in a part of the forum nobody reads. Since my question hasn't been answered. And also since i know that several of the canthan pets have dire and elder version not listed on the thread. This leads me to believe that it might be possible to tame dire and elder versions of the others as well.
Perhaps this thread should be mirrored or something so that people can help contribute new information not listed or missing.

Unfortunantely, Jason, most people only read the information, and never the questions. I'd have answered your question, but I just don't know. The Index isn't perfect, but it is the most complete one created to date. If you find out the answer to your question, please let the rest of us know.

You have the damage type of the Black Moa listed as Slashing while the Moas as Piercing. Is this an error on your part or on the Devs?
Quintus Antonius
09-07-2006, 05:39
Actually, it's an error on the part of the reader, because the both the normal and the Black Moa's damage is listed as slashing, not piercing, and it never was.
Sorry. Not having a main ranger character, the topic of pets don't interest me that often.
As to your question about Dire Crabs, I've heard that it's possible to charm one of the level 20 crabs that appears right at the start of the Boreas Seabed mission (along with the Crab clan), but I've never actually tried this, so take this suggestion with a grain of salt.
The Stiehl

I have charmed the Crabs at the start of Boreas Seabed, and they are level 20 Elder Crabs, no doubt about it.

Well he was half right. Striders are listed as piercing while moas and black moas are slashing. I find this odd since striders are just really really tall moas.
JeanDeathwish
11-07-2006, 06:33
Opps. Nietzsche is correct. Ive mistaked the two. Well, I prefer Slashing because some Necromancers have armor vs Piercing. It is strange that it was made that way. Striders, Moas, Black Moas and Cranes should all have piercing.
I'm not sure I like having a lurker even if it was dire. Its basically not visable from range and makes it hard to see what its doing. I think I'll aim for a dire tiger/white tiger. I'll have to locate where I saw them exactly and then post here.

I believe that there is a Dire Crab with the ranger boss outside of Zos Shivros Channel, but I don't think it is possible to get it from him.
jackwooly
16-07-2006, 00:24
Milodestus the Wrangler is his name.
The crab is actually wild but he charms it. If you get to him quick enough you might be able to charm it but I'm not sure.
The Level 15 tigers in Pongmei Valley are dire. They can be seen outside of boreas by the yeti. Up to 4 can spawn depending on the which random spawn you get. Which means it is possible that one of them doesn't have a beastmaster yeti by it that tames it before you.
If you want to get one depart from boreas run with speed boosts to the area on the left as you move away from boreas. Make sure to highlight the closest one to you can choose to charm it so the skill takes you to it. As long as id doesn't turn red before the skill activates your good to go. If it does clear the yeti on the radar if all dire tigers visable have turned red. In the far back there is a warrior yeti boss if his group didn't spawn beastmaster in it and there is a dire tiger there its your best bet. On occation the closer ones will not have beastmasters but its worth trying for all 4 before mapping back to try again.
The Level 15 white tigers in Melandru's Hope. I only seen one and it is by the beastmaster boss. Its basically impossible to get to it before he tames it. Since after entering some 50 times the tiger spawns next to him and as soon as its visable its turned red and tamed.
They can also be tamed in Zen Daijun, both the mission and explorable area.
Regarding the cranes are you saying there are level 3s and/or 15s there?
I believe there are only 3s? It'd be useful if there were elders there

I've been doing the Tyrian missions, and if I remember correctly, warthogs can be found in The Wilds, Bloodstone Fen, and Aurora Glade.
u can charm the lvl 15 dire crab, i think u can charm all the pets that have been charmed by an enemie. ( save humans ofcourse ).

whom...if someone could confirm these rumors for me:
I heard a rumor that there is a "pink" panther somewhere in Tyria?
I also heard a rumor that you can tame a panda bear somewhere in cantha like the one in the ranger mission on shing jea island?
Quintus Antonius
02-09-2006, 20:50
Neither are true. The "pink" panther thing came out of a joke topic about dying (as in coloring) pets. The panda cannot be tamed due to restrictions of the portrayal of the animal in China, as confirmed by ANet.
I'm sorry this has to be my first post on this forum, and it will be totally off-topic, I'm afraid.
But... What? Come again?
Portaid rights on an animal? What is that about?
Again, my apologies for the off-topicness.... But I was too amazed.

In China and possibly other asian nations and/or cutures the Panda is a highly religious symbol. And apparantly them coming into harm even in a virtual world is offensive to those people. Even if they are perhaps a minority in the world since GW is a global game they wished to respect those people and left the panda out as being a pet. Originally this was supposed to be a feature as far as I understand so it must have become an issue closer release when sale of the game was proposed.
I honestly think those people are making a big deal over it since they don't have to play the game and be the ones putting them into harms way or they could simply leave the panda out for that region or have something like if you don't want to see panda come to harm even in a virtual game click here so that the panda then appears as a bear to them so the majority who doesn't hold the same belief but apparantly this extra coding project to have something appear different to someone who finds is offensive will not happen any time soon.
Its funny we can bring harm to endangered animals in a virtual world though (offensive to PETAand its supporters). And accomadations were made for regions where its against the law to PvP if your a minor. PvP wasn't removed from the game for everyone only for those it is wrong for them to do it. Personally even at this point I really want to have a panda pet and am still disapointed with how anet handled it compared to other similar situations of the game. As These two examples are just the most obvious.
Ranger Nietzsche
05-09-2006, 22:41
mmm I still think people blew the whole panda thing out of proportion.
Its just a different skin on a bear.
TONS and TONS of people complained that the canthan pets like the tiger and crabs that have two versions are just reskinned, like tiger = white tiger = lynx=stalker etc. etc.
But yet many of those same people (not necessarily the above poster though) were OUTRAGED that ANet didn't reskin the bear.
It wasn't just that it was offensive to the average Chinese person, its downright AGAINST the LAW. And changing it would be a decent amount of code
Blocking PVP for minors is different than having to load a different skin for an animal based on region and having to check that parameter every single time you load a map.
Finally, have a little empathy. Just because someone not from the region doesn't understand why a particular symbol is sacred to them doesn't mean they are wrong to be offended by it.
Imagine the outrage in the US if I got to have a tamable Jesus to run around, do my bidding and sacrifice in the name of IWAY. (ironic as many people think that IWAY is a GW sin, I love it when metaphors come together like that).
Origionally I felt like what I could have or do in a game was being dictated by a people group or goverenment. I was just majorly disapointed. And I objected to it because there was alternatives. The client has to check that the person trying to pvp is not a minor in those regions each time they are in an PvP capable area. Doesn't seem much different than a client in a region not allowed to harm pandas checking each time they enter a zone that has a panda. Maybe the check would happen more frequently. And a bit of coding added to change the skin. I just felt that anet kind of took the duck in the corner rather than being creative to allow those it was not wrong for to have it. I think it came down to lets not do extra work to satisfy a moderate minority of players in game who will be disapointed that this is not there. After all they will continue to play anyways. And probably are. I know I am still playing but I'm still disapointed.
Ok so its against the law for chinese to harm pandas. Its againts the law to harm or kill endangered animals yet that is in the game. The law thing may have been part of the reasoning to anet from the people against it being in the game but the primary reason given to us was because of the religious symbology.
Oh I definately respect their beliefs. And I wouldn't want them to be offended by something anet did. Thats why I offered the alternative idea way back at release when it was discovered we didn't get the panda we thought we were getting. I figured it was a way to not offend them and also make it available to the players who wanted to get that panda once they had the game.
I would definately say I would be offended if I saw Jesus as a pet and getting killed. However if it was happening and the pet looked like something else to me and I was none the wise that you see it as Jesus I wouldn't have anything to be offended by.
But anyways I can't wait to see the pets in nightfall. I hope we get some unique body types and cool animals. Like Rhinos, Elephants, etc for pets.

Tensions have run high about the panda issue for several months now, and I do not want this topic being discussed again in here. It's all be said before, and it still won't change anything in-game. I respect everyone's opinion on the panda issue, but at the same time, I do not want a debate on it breaking out again. Leave that for the CDF.
I was just thinking. This info could be mirrored on GWO wiki and point back to the thread for discussion. What do ya think? We could even include more pics and stuff along with it.

I remember the quest the panda goes over to an area and waits for everyone but never attacks or gets into aggro with anything. The work put into it is beautiful though. I thought it would have been neat to see pandas in the game like the bulls that are nuetral out in the fields.
Out of the pets they put in factions I like the two tigers the best. The phoenix is kind of neat too. Kind of a pain if you have to tame it multiple times to get a dire evolution. Thats why I went for the already dire tiger to tame.

Looks great, good job Jason. However, it appears you or someone else have added notes to the pages which are not accurate, confirmed, or official.
EDIT: It also looks like some extra names were tacked onto photo and information credits for people who contributed neither.
I added a couple from my experience of trying to tame the lvl 15 tigers. Some where notes were listed parenthitically next to the location I moved to the notes and worded them to sentance form. I can alter specifics if you want to let me know how to change them if your not comfortable with editing wiki.

Well, remember, this was a community project. Most of the information there was agreed upon and backed by several people until we had a general consensus, more or less. I don't think it is appropiate for someone to just add in information as they see fit.
I may edit it for grammar and usage, and fix some spelling and punctuation mistakes. The guide isn't meant to be a "Tips and Tricks" for catching pets. It's solely an informative piece of literature. Most of the information added is instructions on how to catch pets, which is not the purpose of the guide.
Please forgive me if I seem somewhat ungrateful. I do appreciate that you took time from your day to do all that and were willing to help us. I just hope you understand what I'm saying. It's like an author sending a book to a publisher and the publisher adding information. I will probably leave in most of what you added. Like I said, I'm just going to edit some of the spelling and grammar.

I cross referenced this pet guide with the information in other pet guides that actually have research (rather than random fan forum guides that take information from the mouth of the Prima Guide and such).
The most glaring thing to me is that Warthogs under testing do not do blunt damage.
Here is a link (http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Talk:Animal_companion#Pet_Damage_Types) to an ongoing discussion on the topic. Im too tired to remember the goodlink badlink rules so remove it if necessary.

Within the Lore Forum, offlinking is allowed so long as it is for research purposes and not to promote another site.

Totally understand. I misunderstood the point of the guide. Perhaps a 2nd segment for tips at the bottom of the page to keep the itegrity of the work that was from the thread. Other than that all the information was kept as is just the couple parenthetical parts moved to the notes for visual arrangement of the tables. I respect your work as well and would not want me transferring it to the wiki part of the site to alter it from the vision put forth for it.
I altered the article to add a tips and tricks section with a note at the top for it. Let me know what you think on that. I'm also double checking it to the thread again to make sure I didn't error on the trasferance of the information.

Yup, I'd appreciate if people would begin collecting data for the Nightfall pets. We will need locations and pictures. It'd be nice if we know what kind of damage each did too. I haven't completed the entire game yet, so I'm not in a position to gather data, but as soon as I can, I will help out.

Regarding the cranes are you saying there are level 3s and/or 15s there?
I believe there are only 3s? It'd be useful if there were elders there
sry haven't been on the forums in a while. Yes they are lvl 3's. They're right by the waterfall.

I haven't come across any of the others yet as non-hostile creatures, so that's all I have for now.

Minor point.. . but the Cantha crane comes in two versions - one with blue crested head and another with a red crested head.

If hippo was there before and isn't now I wonder why? Don't tell me there is a region out there that you can play the game in the hippo is sacred and harm can't come to it.

As oppose to say...humans?
I wanted a pet hippo. If this was real life, it would own all those other pets in a fight....

I don't know, but if they had made it an African Hippo I would have gone for it. Since they made it a Pigmy hippo it was more lik whatever...LOL. I think an African elephant would be very coooool  .

I believe I can conclusively say there is no Hippo in guild wars Nightfall.

Has pet growth (in visual size) returned in Nightfall?
Lions do grow, I tested that.
Can someone confirm this for Crocodiles?

I didn't even know our pets could grow...I think I've been living in a cave...LOL!!! Is growth based on lvl, the amount of EXP accumulated over time? Or on titles they earn such as dire, playful, etc.? Do stalkers grow???

Tyrian pets grow, Cathan pets do not, and now apparently at least some Elonian pets grow. I think they grow by leveling up, but I'm not sure.

Its always been there. Some pets its more obvious that others.

I would guess developer concerns about server lag in pvp.
IF you look at all of the Elonian pets BUT the hippo, they are all reskinned skeletons of the previous pets from Tyria (except maybe the rat...he is hard to place). Each NEW skeleton they would add is a new object to load on a map and several pets with different skeletons running around adds a lot of server lag that would be absent if they were all reskinned versions of the same skeletons.

Look, it doesn't matter why the hippo isn't in the game. That's a topic for the CDF, not the Lore Forum. All that matters for the purpose of this guide is that the hippo is not in the game.
The lion:
http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/3360/lionlv2.jpg
And the lioness:
http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/4907/lionesscx8.jpg
Note: some lions/lionesses are hostile, while some are not.
Specifically, Lions are aggressive in Kourna while docile in Vabbi.
Locations (that I've spotted): Jahai Bluffs just NW of the sanctuary entrance(before Great Zektuka quest begins, labelled Aggressive Lion(ess)); Barbarous Shore, far SE corner (still all aggressive); Yatendi Canyons, various and alone, gender generated randomly. If passive, the pet is level 5. If aggressive, the pet is level 10. (I'm not positive about the aggressive part as I didn't know aggressive pets could even be tamed.)
Pet: Hyena
Found: Northern Sections of the Shattered Plains (Specifically, I found one in Poisonous Outcrops.) Only passive, level 5. I'd post a screenshot, but I don't have an account online to store images yet.

aggressive pets can be tamed. just like elder dire and hearty spiders can be.
I just ran across a very large Turtle just south of Maatu Keep. This turtle even had jugs of some sort on it's shell. The name was "Turtle" and green so I was wondering if this could be a tameable pet? At the time I did not have a Hero that was petless and I was not /R activated when I saw it.
Has anyone seen this turtle and is it tameable?
I tried to zone and rezone about 10 times and never saw that Turtle again. I'll keep looking for him from time to time.

If it was really big and followed by some luxons its not tamable.
No it was as big as my character was but no Luxons were around it. It was heading towards the Keep from the Guard to the south.

I know the turtle you're talking about, but no, you can't tame it. Unfortunately.

It would have been cool if we could. Its a seige turtle and is usually escorted by other npcs.
