View Full Version : Water
So has anyone brought up stuff about water and maybe having the ability to swim or fight in and under water? They could open up huge new areas if they had things underwater. Sure there could be things about breathing and all that but skills and items can answer those problems.
I think it would be fun to have quests that were under water and it would be a good way to get out some new creative monsters and such. In light of pirates of the carribean coming out there could be a sunken ship with pirate bone monsters on it, just a funny idea, but it would be pretty cool.
Also if you were able to swim then maybe you would be able to break agro from some creatures?
Who knows, let me know what you think
The game engine of Guild Wars itself would have difficulities with this, since GW doesn't recognize a Z-axis (height) beyond minimal levels.
At the same time, elements of an "underwater" type environment are already sort of present in "The Deep" elite mission areas. Though there isn't water (due to the Jade Wind), it's definitely setup as a deep-sea theme area as the name would imply.

I'm not particularly interested in underwater experiences, underwater exploration is really a high tech theme rather than a fantasy theme, it can be done but it would be a little unusual.
Swimming on the water and Sea Travel would be very interesting though, a new form of exploration is seriously in need already, as people are already getting dejavu from running around landscapes and fulfilling quests/missions in simular situations. Taking GW onto Ships, and allowing us to navigate the Seas for some real exploration would greatly revitalize GW gameplay, and add a new experience in play rather than repeating the same landborn experience over and over again.
Pervious chapters can be overlooked, we don't need to add pointless swimming in chapters which are already made, but a new chapter and continuing chapters with sea exploration and some swimming would be great.
The other exploration element which could greatly revitalize travel, exploration and combat is climbing. With new terrains which have to be climbed and pioneered, instead of walked over, we would have another new experience in our gameplay. Adding a working Z-axis (and there are some traces of the Z-axis already) and the ability to climb up and over steeped terrain would add a new factor of enjoyment to GW.
Along with both of these features new skills and skills slots could be made exclusively for these skills. Alot of people are against more skill slots, but bringing skills which primarily or only work wile climbing or swimming can easily cripple your build. With 2 new skill slots which can only be equipped with a Climbing and Swimming skill, players would be able to bring some enjoyable and effective skills to move and attack wile climbing or swimming. If they are limited to certain chapters, these skills slots and skills can be made innopperable, but for certain and perhaps continuing chapters with climbing and swimming, new skills and skill slots would greatly increase the scope and techniques used in the game.
There are alot of things GW can improve on. And before anyone mully grubs about the limitations of the GW engine, I will remind them that future chapters cost 50 dollars a piece. At the cost of a totaly seperate game, which is truely reusing the same game engine in new themes, we can expect and ask for additional gameplay elements and mechanical improvements to the game. Stand alone gameplay or not, it is still the same gameplay in a new location, Anet will be using the same GW engine over and over again in each chapter, for the cost of a completely seperate game I say we deserve some radical improvements to the gameplay engine from time to time. Whether they effect previous chapters or not, I don't feel it is right to pay $50 over and over again for expansions which could be (but usually arn't) played seperately, these are actually just expansions......

i think was going to add boat ride but never really finshed. That should be a chapter in self.
You should be able to own a ship too!

I already wrote an idea for "Guild Wars at Sea" a wile back, if you have time to search for it on this (or several other sites), you can read my ideas for Guild bought ships and a new PvE and PvP mode for Guilds to enjoy. I think new elements like this are an important part of GW growth, and a good PvE mode of Guild involvement is also a neccessity.
again anouther idea i would love and wondered about since i first got gw, it would make a great addition but would require some pretty radical changes to the gw engine

The sea currently is just a "sheet" or where the waves break/spray is just emitters. Consequently there is no "volume" below the sea and changing the game engine to accomodate this would be a significant operation - in fact even a new engine.
I really like the idea about boats though and that could be pretty feasible. Shiver me timbers!!!!

offtopic but I'm fairly sure Aion is using Crytek engine not GW's engine...
