View Full Version : Stereotypes to Avoid
Hm, so now that there is a new profession coming out, there will always be the kids who want to roleplay their favorite characters; we had "Legolas" for rangers, "Naruto" for assassins; take your guess about what the kids will be gravitating towards the Dervish for ("Ooooh! I want to be like the Prince of Persia!")
Yeah, I've been hearing Prince of Persia a lot. Can anyone think of anything else?

lol yeah that would be funny if people would get it, chances are you get random people saying "why is your name mandy *insert shirt thing here*"
OOH GRIM REAPER zomg lolz
I'd have to say I hear Grim Reaper (and variants) the most.
If I am to make a dervish myself however, I'm gonna dye his clothes white :)
The Grim Reaper
agreed on that good thing i aint the only one:wink:
when i find a nice dress for my dervish it will be black:azn:
the mighty drazgon

ill decide wot to call him and what colour when i see al the armours, cant wait :D
The most popular name coming from this build is definitly going to be Grim Reaper. Or names along that line.
Gonna name mine Smrt Reaper most likely XD
crying wolf
24-07-2006, 00:42
All those names are already taken by necromancers lol.
Grim reaper =/= holy warrior. Which is what a dervish is. Goin to be weird havin holy enchantments on a guy named leet grim reeeper.
Inspiration is a funny thing ... what to name a character? After the first Spiderman movie, somehow it felt right to name one of my gaming characters BoneSaw ... was a warrior type character in another game.
My predictions for 95% of the Dervish names we'll see:
X Grim Reaper X
X Grim Reeper X
X Grimm Reaper X
X Grim Reaperr X
X Grim Reeperr X
X Grimm Reaperr X
Oh, and don't forget:
Xx Grim Reaper Xx
Xx Grim Reeper Xx
...
...
And so on and so forth.

Gonna name mine Smrt Reaper most likely XD
Smrt means death in Slovakian, that's cool. ;)
I'll make a Dervish only after a paragon..maybe I'll make a funny name...like Fatal Devotion... :P

Well i've chosen The Drunken Dervish as the name for my dervish but i have some other recomendations for people so i'll list a few here
The Athiest
Joke Of The Gods
Dude In A Dress (male character of Course)
and of course The Wheat Farmer
Anyway the point is theres a ton of ways to go other than the cliched reaper route.

Why do scythes sound all too necro to me? Ah, nevermind, Diablo. I would be interested in seeing some exotic weaponry. I mean can you imagine the poor things having only scythes to wave around? The counter to a dervish - a wheat field.
Saida Sura
Boring I know but not as clich as the reaper.
True story. My brother went to a game cafe one and gave his handle as shoitaan,
the attendent goes: "That's new and original"
my brother: "not too many original handles around here?"
the attendent: "let me put it this way, 80% of the people here have the word dark somewhere in their handle"
The Wheat Farmer
Lol thats good. I will reveal my name after I have taken it permenantly :p.
As far as common to-be-used names, hmm...
Soul Harvester
Harvester of Souls
Soul Reaper
Soul Reaping
Fallen Angel
ect...
As far as others...
Farmer In The Dell
Lawnmower Man
Angry Farmer
Angry Mob

The Athiest
Joke Of The Gods
Dude In A Dress (male character of Course)
and of course The Wheat Farmer
And of course The Pink Reaper, if you're going to make a male Dervish in full pink armor. Someone suggested that, and I think we should have The Pink Reaper One, The Pink Reaper Two and so on.

Something that fits his Whirlwind skill that lay waste to everything in its path. Got it!
Tasmanian Devil!
I already reserved "Glum Reaper". He will be a rather sullen fellow in dark blue robes, and will often complain about loneliness and the futility of life. You see, socializing isn't exactly easy when everybody around you keeps dying. Sure, you meet lots of new people, but they usually aren't very happy to see you, and it's not like you have much time to get to know them anyway. Kind of hard to build a lasting friendship with someone who's just going to keel over in a few minutes.

I tag my characters with the same tag somewhere in the name, as i have for the last 14 years with any game i play. All but my Necromancer....Faust Bloodbane some reason i didnt use my tag for him.
I refuse to make my name after something in a video game i "port" other characters from one game to the other however with assassins creed on the horizon im counting on something to that extent *flashes of white cloaked figures running around as hooded assassin secondaries....wielding daggers and claiming they can climb buildings* oh hell....
Interesting, I really didnt think that names were catagorized, but i barely even look at peoples names.

paragon of light
because dervish and paragon are about the opposite
paragon light armor and helps people
dervish is a grim reaper and kills people
im going to dye my dervish silver+yellow
my dervish name will be:
austerus messor = grim reaper (latin)
letum messor = death reaper (latin)
levidensis messor = thin reaper (latin) (magere hein in dutch)
i dont like to copy everyone so i just copy it in a other language:grin:
i am actualy hopinng the dervish will have a grim reaper look a like scythe and a fitting armor along with it although i am not counting on the armor party:undecided:

Why does everyone think that Dervish are devils/death things? I was under the impression that they were holy (no talking about Paragon).

Because everyone sees the scythe and thinks they're called "Devilish" instead of "Dervish"... Like crying wolf said, it'll be weird having Grim Reaper clones running around casting holy spells.

From the look on the site; they're going to have robes but I think they are going to have an Egyptian look to them, not a westernized grim reaper but a priest-like appearance with all of those talismans hanging from their vestments.
I kind of like the aqua color they're using, and my try something similar to that - might have to look through some National Geographics of tombs for some name ideas, I'm not sure I'm going to use the last name Soulstryke this time.

Now see I made my assassin similar to the girl who hit Shiro in the storyline! The Ritualist I put together for this weekend's PvP, I started with a voodoo priestess ideal in mind but decided against it - I still love the CE dances for both male and female.
I am definitely doing an Anubis Enforcer type of character - and anyone can use that name I am not going to... I have a friend who is heavy into greek mythology and that whole ancient pantheon I will pick his brain for ideas...

I just fell into my character names while brainstorming for them, because I wanted something that would feel right in the lore of the game even if I wasn't going to get to roleplay with them much. Thus Gwyndryl Soulstryke (Ne/Me), Nyliste (As/Mo but I only seem to use her Assassin skills), Wylotin, Quitess I just tossed out there when I wanted a Rit for PvP this weekend. I have had two different Tlaxxar Hailfists, first a PvE warrior that I never got past lvl 2 presearing so I made him a Mo/W to try my hand at being a Monk [not gonna happen] in PvP arenas with a guild... Chrysanthemum Fury (E/N) when I thought I might try to get in with the group that was naming their PvP chars with flower names heh... I've almost tossed her in favor of trying some other PvP builds I've read about, or playing with a couple other game-provided stock builds, but you know how they just grow on you sometimes and you don't want to torch them even if you need the space for something else...? Sometimes, for me, there are too many choices in this game because all the classes are fun to play. I NEVER played a tank or melee character in an MMO before Guild Wars - always sticking to offensive type casters, and always kiting mobs. You can hardly kite in this game and that's cool, but I've so much enjoyed this that I try to play some variety here - and like many have said if you mess around with other builds, you learn more about ways to shut them down when you fight against them.
It takes me a few minutes to brainstorm a character name but it took about two weeks to come up with a guild name when I wanted to make one for myself and to invite adults that don't always have a chance to get on and play; but would like to be in a guild to get the faction and alliance battle and similar perks when we can - since none of my RL friends play even though they bought the game (WoW zombies I tease them) I've got a very small guild, heheh. I didn't realize I was being too clever until I made the guild tag - Wings of Kuunavang [WoK]. See, again, trying to keep in with the lore of the game and still have some fun with a name.

Okay I did some quick browsing for some Egyptian-theme ideas for names; and came across natron, apparently a salt used in the mummification process. I don't know if I'd do another necro unless it was a PvP only for something; but Natron Soulstryke sounds pretty cool and I'm not sure I'd want to use the word Natron for anything but a necro. Perhaps a Dervish/Necromancer - or a Paragon/Necromancer - kill you then preserve your corpse...
Which just leads me to another speculation - do you think the Paragon might get a skill like mummification, that would prevent ressurects or cause harm when they're done, or even corpse exploitation hindering? That would really twist some PvP fights - but I would not want the corpse exploitation to be hindered further than it is already now that the number of undead you can control has been limited.

I'm thinking of a dozen other good Egyptian themes after said conversation with my Egyptian entusiast friend; but I'll refrain now.
Now that we have hoodies it is only a matter of time before the Emo Kids start grabbing their scythes and heading down to the 7-11 to get a slurpee.
Emo Reaper: I'm depressed man

Emo Reaper: I wish we could use dyes on our hair. Hey, Atticus Finch is on.

Hahaha. Bringer of death. I wonder how many shortened versions of "fuer grissa ost drauka" there are already and how many more there will be once Dervishes come out. I foresee lots of Grim Reapers and Ghosts and Phantoms and such. If the class turns out to be a hit-and-run class sort of like Assassin, I would like to see someone named Poultry Geist...you know, for looking like a ghost but being a chicken and running
The general trend of the profession's skills, which I guess I'll see this weekend, will influence what I name my Dervish. Also, I too want to look at armors before I really decide what I'd want to name mine. And I'm sure all you crazy types who run around the PvE weekend (which I do hope they have) buying 15k armors will serve me well for that purpose, lol!
