Travel markings? Elona east of the desert?

I have had this theory that Elona is east of The Crystal Desert, so I went to investigate Diviner's Ascent outside Elona Reach (which I believe must have been the first place the Elonians reached...).
I noticed that the desert obelisks were placed in a certain way...

Could this be travel markings pointing towards Elona Reach? meaning that Elona is somewhere east of The Crystal Desert?

I also noticed that the obelisks that were broken didnt have the glowing symbols on them...

Could that mean that they have lost their function?

As much effort A-Net puts into the finer details, and i truly love the idea of somthing cryptic hidden away... i think its as simple as "they looked cool in that pattern" and if its broken, chances are the lights are broken too.
