What am I talking about here?

It's been around for a long time in gaming, but I think it was some of the underground players of Diablo 2 that just gave it a name.

To be an Iron Man means that you go it alone. . . and if you are already going it alone you add some additional challenge on top of that.

For Diablo 2 Iron Man ment that you could never talk to anyone in town. With the exception of turning in quests to continue to the next acts. . .

This pretty well bared you from trading, gambling, and "Repairing" your items!

Obviously not ment for first or even second timers, but for die hard fans of the game it was a respectable challenge to undertake. (except for the people that played Hardcore Mode + Iron Man. . . Those guys were just Massochists!)

Some other notable feets in the past that I can recall were things like:

Beating Super Metroid with the lowest percent possible (I think it was 16% or something. . .either way an amazing challenge that required bomb jumping)

Competing Seiken Densetsu 3 with only 1 character (This required actually glitching the game so you'd only have 1 hero instead of 3. . . I believe the wolf guy was recommended the most for solo play)

Finishing Castlevania Symphony of the Night unarmed (Yeah you heard me! You punch your way through the game! I hear that there's a side boss that is unbeatable this way, but everything else is possible so you can still beat it)

and so on!

--------------------

Sorry for the rant, but I felt like remonissing a bit.

Getting back on track Nightfall is offering a hero system so it could be very possible to beat the game with only 4 (maybe even less!) characters; all of which you'd be controling yourself.

So how about it?

Are you an Iron Man?

Not that you can really see your own body language, but it may help some people decide.

I'll play it through first... Then I'll Ironman it with my Paragon.

And in D2, I had a friend who did that.. he eventually quit D2 becuase his HC character died at level 93.

Ironman is for wimps im going titanium man...no talking, no armor, no attribute allocation, no forward running, first person view only, no map.

P.S. Anyone who could actually do this seriusly needs to rethink the way they have spent thier life up to now.

Azure Eyes: I think you're confused sir. . .

People take on challenges because they enjoy them.

I won't get inspirational here and mention things like Mt. Everest, but I think even you have gone into the options menu for a game at some point and switched it from Normal difficulty to Hard. . .

I dont think i'll try the iron man thing for guild wars. Although i have done it for other games like Final Fantasy 7 (cloud solo the game with only basic armor/materials)

Well, no thanxs, I allready did it during the preview event :

- I forgot to raise heroes attributes until they were lvl 10 or so
- I gave Koss an axe built, with no axe attribute points afterwards.
- I failed to mention the party had 8 slots for the isle of the dead and went to the last outpost alone with my three heroes.

Ho, wait, you meant INTENTIONALY putting you at a disadvantage?

More seriously, I am not sure GW is the game to enjoy doing that. The game is not about you been uber powerfull, it's about skill balance and team strategy, so I hardly see the point in try to ironman it like Diablo, but if some of you enjoy the experience, why not.

Reminds me of adom challenges ...

(link for people not knowing what the hell im talking about: http://www.andywlms.com/adom/challenge.html )

Adomian challenges can be translated to GW quite easily.

Eternium man

Character must become ascended and gain access to Temple of Ages (or chapter eqivalent) within 10 hour of gameplay, after that he is allowed to enter only Temple of Ages (or chapter equivalent) outpost and Fissure of Woe. No party is permited permited, goal is to reach Survivor Level (2) title.

Iron Man

Goal is to gain ToPK green solo, while keeping survivor title track active.

Lithium man

Win Campaign, solo while keeping survivor title track, only ouposts, and areas that are necesary for completing game are permited to be visited.

Plutonium Man

Kill one each of every monster type solo, inluding all bosses. keep survivor title track active.

Steel man

Never enter outpost exept outposts necesary to create chracter. Reach survivor L2. Suggesting prohecies for this - some skills can be obtained from quests requiring no outposts entering, enough mobs in late maguuna to make it possible to level to 20, lots of collectors armors. Also, suggesting really good conection.

Titanium man

Finish game solo with as little XP as possible. Keep survivor title track active. May require extensive runnig, no bonuses done, redoing failed mission obiously nets you more XP that doing it only once, thus makes you loose challenge.

Brass Man

Never use or pickup nonwhite items (simple, eh? wait, runes are blue, collectros items are blue...) you gotta leave that black dye on ground as well as that purple crystaline ... Finish game solo as survivor

Proton Man

never equip anything except starter weapon and armor, runes and upgrades are not permited. Finish game solo while keeping survivor title track active..

Carbon Fiber Man

You can use only 1 slot of your inventoy, you cant use storage. Finish game solo while keeping survivor title track active. Simple? yes. Has alarming consequences: you cant salvage and id found runes, you can id weapon if you hold it in hand, but then you cant do anyhthing with inventory wich consists of one id kit except selling kit to vendor ... after one use, also since you have to hold weapon in hand to id it, it means merching any previous weapon (o.O). you cant salvage anything, so you must buy materials for armors from traders, it also restrics armors you can craft a lot - only armors that use only 1 type of material can be crafted, and some precaution against crafting armro and ending up with stack of material and amror in invenroty (fails you challenge), you must buy runes from traders ...

---

ok, you can scratch SOLO from most titles as it makes them unbelievably hard (but technically still possible), but keep that survivor thing (matter of principle) :-].

for me, Stell Man done in prophecies sounds fun. we might evewn find out if henchies can level up (as you will have 3 of em if you do searing with hench team) if you keep em long enough. Brass man is weird enough to try, and Carbon fiber Man would be neat ta have too :]

My brain hurts just thinking about those challenges. I think it'd be fun for someone who'd like to personally challenge themselves though.

Slightly off-topic but the ironman i knew in Diablo was when 8 players make a new hardcore character, then they all get to lvl 10 - IN THE SAME GAME, and when everyone got to lvl 10 its a fight just outside Act 1 - All vs all - Last man standing is ironman. Tried it once but a 90+ Sorc came and killed us  but she got killed by an angry Paladin seconds after xD

... Not going to Iron Man Nightfall, but i will probably do alot with hench.

I managed to get a lvl 2 necro to every location in Prophesies...without dieing and then they bring out the survivor title (i never made enough xp to get it...but still).

Was quite funny getting invited to warcamp groups when MM´s were in demand and ppl thinking my lvl was bugged..."No im really only lvl 2"

So far ive hero&henched in Nightfall...it is boun to come to an end somewhere i think....pity

If by "Iron Manning" you mean to solo farm most of the time, do quests/missions rest then yes.

Complete the game in your starer armor, wielding your starter weapon :P

I pretty much iron manned through it like so many console RPG's in the past. since there were no huge bugs like factions had that prevented missions from being completed and with the new heros, it was a lot more fun, but perhaps a little on the easy side. I didn't sleep between Friday night and sometime early Sunday morning.

This is the D2 iron man I remember as well. With the addition that everyone was only allowed to equip the stuff they found in that game.

A variant was to play "untwinked", ie the character was only allowed to use the stuff he found himself (no trading).

Anyway, I dont think I will be attempting any GW ironmanning any time soon. However, I do tend to keep my new GW characters untwinked until they reach level 20 at least. After that I usually want to get my hands on storage to buy the final armor.

Aaaah the good old days of Diablo II. Hardcore was fun & kinda scary losing an mfer at lvl 95 lol. Ironman was fun too building a lvl 9 dueler then going at it in a 1v1 or even 4v4 battle. Yes in hardcore mode. Loot duels ftw. I cant see ironmaning in guildwars since your going to need max armor & we all know you armor does not drop but then you could get max armor from collectors outside of cities, towns & outposts. Woot just found my pudding!!!

Ummm...
Why does it have to be Iron MAN? Why can't be Iron WOman?

Ironman in Diablo2? I remember Ironman in diablo 1 :)

In any case, if you had to solo the game it would be impossible, unless by not talking to anyone, you can include heros/henchies so they can join your party :).

On the other hand, GW isn't as bad, since you don't have to look for perfect items/blah, and generally, the game isn't as difficult for that reason.. Of course, you won't be able to ID stuff, since you can't talk to a merchant, but you could always test with wild blow or something. Also, you auto resurrect, when you wipe, and generally iron-man isn't played hardcore. Also, you'd have a crappy skillbar since you can't talk to the skills trainer. Also, with no way to unlock skills, (BTW, you could still do the SOC quest and get some elites, pick carefully :D), you'd be better off with henchies then heroes.

EDIT: I did do survivor in Diablo 1 and 2. In D1, I played a sorceror (BTW multiplayer in teams of 3, one of each class, although one died about halfway through and we couldn't find a resurrection scroll). In D2, I did a LOL barb (Live off the Land barb, took great advantage of find potion), and talked to no one in town other then those required to for quests. It was rough, but still got through normal. Had no chance in nightmare, with crappy weapons and all. Found a unique axe that made some of it easier, but it broke and couldn't repair it :D.
