General Questions
Q: When will Guild Wars 2 be released?
A: No official release date has been announced yet. There has been speculation of release sometime in 2009/2010.
Q: Will Guild Wars 2 have the same no-monthly-fees payment model as the original Guild Wars?
A: Mike O'Brien, one of the founders and lead designer for ArenaNet, has stated that Guild Wars 2 will not have monthly fees: "Guild Wars has a certain business model: Buy it once and play it for as long as you like. Guild Wars 2 will have the same model." (source (http://www.gamersglobal.com/special/interview/guild-wars-2-more-interview-with-arenanets-founders?page=0%2C4)).
Q: Will Guild Wars 2 have campaigns, like Factions and Nightfall, or expansions, similar to Eye of the North?
A: ArenaNet has stated they haven't made a final decision in this regard, but that expansions are the more likely possibility.
Q: Is there a Guild Wars 2 beta, and how can I participate in it?
A: ArenaNet/NCSoft have not yet announced if/when/how any potential public or closed betas will take place.
Updated June 27th: "Although we publically alpha- and beta-tested the original Guild Wars while it was still in early development, with Guild Wars 2 we will commence beta testing closer to the game's release. With that in mind, we will not start beta testing in 2008 as we had originally planned. Guild Wars 2 is a very large and ambitious game, and Guild Wars players rightfully have very high expectations of its quality. We want players to be absolutely blown away by the game the first time they experience it." (Source: GuildWars.com quote)
Gameplay Questions
Q: What professions will there be in Guild Wars 2?
A: Currently there is no information regarding any returning or new professions in Guild Wars 2.
Q: Will there be playable races in Guild Wars 2?A: Human, Norn, Asura, Charr, and Sylvari have so far been announced as playable races. (Source: PCGamer)
Q: Will I have to create a new character for Guild Wars 2, or can I use my existing Guild Wars character(s)?
A: You'll have to create a new character for Guild Wars 2, though you will be able to link the Hall of Monuments of an existing Guild Wars account to the new Guild Wars 2 account. How this will be done is currently unknown. Also, your character names from the original Guild Wars will be reserved for you in Guild Wars 2.
Q: Will there still be GvG in Guild Wars 2?
A: Guild Wars 2 will include structured PvP elements of a similar nature to GvG. Exactly how similar these format(s) will be to current GvG competition is not yet known.
Q: What will the level cap be in Guild Wars 2?
A: Details concerning Guild Wars 2's leveling system have not yet been released. There are rumors that the level cap may be high or unlimited, but that such may not actually have a significant effect on character power.
Updated June 27th: "Guild Wars 2 will have the kind of extensive character advancement appropriate to a persistent world RPG. It is our priority to avoid forcing players into the grind-based gameplay that too often accompanies a high level cap.
Also, to allow players the freedom to play together even if their friends are at a much higher (or lower) level, we are planning to implement a strong sidekicking system, similar to that used in City of Heroes.
We're applying this same philosophy to competitive play. Players will be able to engage in organized, balanced PvP (similar to GvG in the original Guild Wars) without needing to first level up characters, find equipment, or unlock skills. While inside the organized PvP area, all characters will be the same power level and will have access to the same equipment." (Source: GuildWars.com quote)
Q: Will Guild Wars 2 be instanced like Guild Wars, or a persistent world?
A: Specific details are not yet available, but ArenaNet has stated that Guild Wars 2 will have a fairly persistent world along with instanced areas.
Q: Will Guild Wars 2 be soloable?
A: "Yes. You will be able to advance your character to the maximum level without ever joining a group if you so desire. Most content will be designed in a solo-friendly way, though often with mechanisms for scaling up in difficulty when more players are involved. This will give players the option to experience the game whichever way they prefer. At the same time, it is important for an MMO community to join together to overcome challenges. There will also be some areas in the game that require a coordinated group effort." (Source: GuildWars.com quote)
Technical Questions
Q: Will my PC need a DirectX 10 graphics card to run Guild Wars 2?
A: No, Guild Wars 2 will support DirectX 10 but it will not be required. (Source: Gaile Logs)
Q: Will I still be able to play Guild Wars 2 with anyone, no matter what server they're on?
A: Yes, though Guild Wars 2 will use multiple world servers, players will be able to switch servers at will, similar to how district-switching works in Guild Wars.
Q: Will there be a z-axis (vertical movement) in Guild Wars 2?
A: Yes, Guild Wars 2 will have a z-axis and allow vertical player movement, unlike Guild Wars.
Q: Will Guild Wars 2 use an entirely new graphics engine?
A: The GW1 engine will be the foundation of the GW2 engine, but it will be upgraded and rewritten substantially to provide a visual experience that players will expect in a sequel to Guild Wars. (Source: PCGamer)
