View Full Version : An idea to replace heroes in GW2

I really dislike heroes, but I have this idea that might be really awesome.
Instead of heroes, suppose we can simply bring 4 of our characters to any place that would normally allow heroes/henchmen and they would be played by the AI.
You would be able to decide which of your characters you would be playing as and have the others be controlled by the AI, that way you could swap between professions and races when needed instead of having story driven heroes, which let's face it, no one really cares about. Wouldn't you rather design your heroes rather than be given NPCs to drag around?
This would greatly reduce the grind (good for casual players especially) as they could level up 4 (or however many) of their characters at the same time.

I always look at each suggestion to figure out what could be wrong with the theory(must be the mathematician in me). And the only thing I would see wrong with it is that the farming and selling companies could much more easily branch out into character selling as well. 8 Chars leveled to almost max! $9.00!! Or something along those lines.
How about instead they just give you the option of designing the look of your heroes/companion(s)? Of course in GW2 I am going to like power boost no companion gives you. Dps, muy bueno.

The main point of the suggestion is that the player can switch profession or race on the fly. So when the group tells you they don't need what you're on, instead of being rejected, no problem, you just get on your other thing right there without relogging.
Also that you don't have to play through the game over and over to progress those characters.
I think your concern can be applied to the game in any case. I mean, people will sell accounts that have lots of content and achievements acquired. That's just how it is.

This idea reminds me of Final Fantasy, where you also control a party more than one player, and where you can swap between different characters in your party.
Anyway this is not going to happen, simply because they are going to imply companions instead of hero's, and players will only be allowed to have 1 companion. That companion will probably be more customizable than the hero's we have now.

Yeah, I think I remeber reading something along that line.. and I think maybe they were also going to somehow link some special companions to the Hero&Pet Monument and the Minipet Monument in HoM... but not sure if I actually read this or it's some perverse fantasy of mine

I've always liked this idea, (been suggested lots). Though I'm thinking/hoping that we'll have characters that that can actually change primary professions in GW2. One character fits all. I also like the idea of using offline guild members as your H/H team, when a team isn't available.
Though in GW2 we may not need teams as big as we do in GW1. Players may be able to quests with less management overhead. Less AI micro management, and equipment hassle.
Speaking of switching characters, We could also use some customizable player housing instead of a login screen, and switch around to view equipment sets etc. . on different charaters, though:
I just deleted all my characters in hair-pulling frustration with how storage is handled in GW1. I really hope the dozens of characters as storage Does Not find its way into GW2. Be much better if we just had account wide unlocks for equipment etc. as in PvP. . .
this would mean that to you have to roll multiple toons to get further in the game, even if you only want one toon to play with.
i also wonder how they are goingto implement a system with hero's or (or henchies for that matter) in a persistent world. unless you go in an instanced mission there will be no loading screens when you leave town. so at what point will they spawn the hero/henchman?
Also make the AI NOT run into dungeon traps that is SO annoying!

This may be a brave assertion, but I figured they'd spawn when you'd add them to your party. Brave.

wich could mean that when im in a town/outpost with lets say 100 people, each having 3 hero's in their party's, having a totall of 400 toons in a town. lets say that all of em use the same three hero's. this would be a weird sighting seeing 100 kosses or 100 dunkoro's lol. also what would this situation do with lag if there would be even more people in that town?

I've always wanted an idea like this to be implemented. Maybe to stop it from being abused you could only use one character at a time, or they must be at least level 20 in order to use. Of course, your characters could only go and explore areas that the least experienced ones could do.
It sounds like difficult programming, and I'm not even a programmer. Nevertheless, I think it would be pretty cool.
they did said that companions will not take place of the party, so they come with you but you can still take a full party with you.

Erm.. a good question
Maybe at least a little part of every town is instanced? Then again that would mean going through a lot of boring procedures just to add a few henchies... hmmm well dunno.

I dunno.. I really like my heroes. HH teams are what keep me playing since sometimes my play times are inconsistent and easily broken by interruption. Then there are some days I just want to hop in and do stuff and not have to worry about anyone else.

That doesn't mean that ANet are able to do it though.
