View Full Version : New Pets and Improved Pet Control in GW2

Tro

I think it would be cool if more Pet models were to be put in for GW2. also give the Pet's their own unique species ablities.
Pet Ideas:
Dragons
Bears
Boars
Scorpions
Rhinos (small size. hey it's a fantasy game isn't it)
Giant Frogs
Small Elephants
Monkeys
Large Bugs

my idea for Improved Pet Control:
add a stay and follow command.
allow us to place pet spells on the Pet's action bar. I believe Heros function in a similar way.
Add Pet Emotes. this could be kinda funny.

feel free to add your own ideas :afro::soapbox::listen::laughing:

So would the unique ability of the Monkey be to fling poop? If so I'd be all over that!

Better pet controls is a must, and they need to be more responsive when given commands. Pet armor. The ability to swap out pets anytime in town (pet stable). Possibly a larger variety of evolutions. More pets that aren't reskins... >_>

Basically revamp the whole pet system (moar depth please) and make pets actually worth using.

I'd like to see behavioural differences between pets.
For example Boars would be very aggressive and fight until the bitter end, whereas Frogs would be more likely to retreat when injured.

But there is a small problem that maybe only I have forseen......

In GW2, it has ben stated many times, that the added presence of swimming wil be introduced. Needless to say....if we can swim in the water, other unfriendly ceatures are going to want to swim in the water too. And seeing as a Lion or what-not cant really swim in the lake..(well, they can, but thats beside the point), I think that we should have some "water friendly" animals that could be ascessed ia a marine stable or what-not.

Ideas:
Shark
Octopus
Squid
Mermaid
Pengin:grin:
Baracuda
Etc..etc..

i like to see some non-realistic pets, i always liked to have the raptor as pet.....
also, 1 pet doesn't have to be litterly one creature, what about a swarm of bee's that do sting damage.

Two thumbs up to the tiny rhinos ideas from OP.

My only problems with GW as a game is the somewhat limited UI options (I know lua so that was an appeal to me back in WoW when I played it) and the lack of keybindings for some hero/pet options. I hope that they'll expand it in GW2.

Maybe passive skills such as increased loot chance or something similar. We don't want them replacing Heroes/Henchmen/People.

the swarm of bees are a bit special tho, they don't damage one big damage per 2 seconds, the damage little by little constantly.

I meant only a very few magic skills. Not hundreds available to our current magic users. Besides, I think previous threads indicate an extreme dislike for passive abilities... (Not that I agree with them, but there it is...) I don't get the impression that there will be heroes/henchies in GW2 anyway. Only the mysterious sidekick has been mentioned.

Anyways, I still stand by my idea.

Charm animal works like signet of capture. Could swap between multiple pets by just changing skills. Possibility of multiple pets at once.

Different pet different, capabilities. Brutal mauling or poisonous bit. Not both. Pets gain adrenaline and use it on their own special skills.

Barding. My warriors pet bear requires proper armour.

i feel that Beast Mastery should be a rangers primary, and the pet should have its own skill bar, but not as large as the players, maybe 4 skills, however the ranger would still need to carry Charm Animal and a rez for the pet.

I am amazed no one has suggested for the ability to mount and ride pets. like a horse or tiger, or i fu had a dragon or griphon to fly on it. And a Pet Stable so you can have multiple pets. And maybe not just have it to where rangers can have pets.. I.E. what about a ele can have like imps and demons and a warrior a tiger a ranger has limitless possibilities(granted we have those professions in GW2) this is only my second post so thanks everyone.:afro: i just thought the afro thing was cool..

I was thinking about pet armor as has been suggested. I think there should be one or two pieces for actually Armor which would determine armor strength and/or stat boosts. The other pieces should be visual. Hats for festivals, war helms, "rider mounts" on the back(visual not actually for riding), etc.

New pets would be nice, but without any controls at all, instead have it so it displays free will. Their actions are based off how they are treated through life (Cowardly ones run away, aggressive pets attack without asking, lazy ones don't run after you, the list is endless). Perhaps after a long time you could develop some controls by spending time training your pet, come here, attack, sit and so on.

Just thinking outside the box here. and of course this suggestion is for PVE.

ok only reason i said something about mounts is the newer more persistent world thinking it would be connected and not have as many loading scenes between towns. and i didnt write in caps, just a bigger font.. sorry for the misunderstanding.

On topic: I like the idea of new pets and new pet controls. Pets should have their own abilities that they do on their own, and that you can set to auto or disable. Kind of like heroes, but with pets. Maybe not a full skill bar like players would have, but some space where you could put skills. This was the one thing I liked about WoW pets because there were pet skills you could train, and certain pets could only have certain skills. A crab wouldn't have the bite skill that a wolf would have.

As it stands in GW1, it feels like the pets were tacked on without much thought. I don't feel like I have as much control over them as I do with H/H.

sorudo, could you elaborate on why you do not think mounts are appropriate for GW2.

In addition I would like to add to this thread (mentioned it somwhere else), the possibility of a mount that functions as a pet or vice versa. With the size of the rainbow pheonix you may as well hop on and go for a airbourne adventure. Leading on from this is a "mounted mode" of combat where you could either dismount and have your original set of skills and fight with you mount/pet or remain mounted and have access to unique "pet skill" and/or at the same time have "mounted" only skills. It would be comparible to how the medievil warrior fought on horseback compared to how he fought whilst dismounted.

Just a couple Ideas, fell free to add to or disagree (with reason) with this idea.

junundu anyone? ROAR!

I'm sure a good example of a mount is a Junundu. I believe that guild wars tested everything they can in GW1 to figure out if something is good or bad. Whilst GW1 is good, a lot of mistakes were made. I'm glad arenanet can see through this. I like to think as GW1 as a platform to get used to GW2.

I believe the mount system if implemented would be similar to one of the Junundu. Obviously not everyone will be mounted 100% of the time, but probably at some point of the game. This way, GW2 should allow a number of large and small pets. Small pets for battles and large pets for mounting. Everyone will have a large pet to mount which should not be customizable or only to a certain extent, then the small pet which should be customizable for the large part, with additional features for each pet of course.

I dislike the old system where all pets are equal. Feels cheap.

What if?...

Both Heroes and pets are replaced by the mysterious Companion? What if instead of a Ranger's Charm Animal skill, there's a universal "Befriend" skill (name needs work - whatever) that one can use on neutral NPCs, regardless of their species? This would be available to all classes and races.

In the inns and markets of towns and outposts you'll find neutral humans, Norn, Asura, etc. that you can recruit as your Companion. You give him/her equipment and skills, maybe even a name.

Duck down into the sewers of such a town and use the same skill to make some sort of sewer-monster your Companion. Or head out into the wide open world and take on some wild beast in the way you'd charm a Tiger now.

Companions may be much like our Heroes, with full skill bars you can change and inventories you can fiddle with. Not sure how you'd equip a tiger. Maybe you find an axe with various stats which a human would get as an axe, but which would appear as some sort of paw/claw weapon as you insert it into the tigers weapon slot. Same stats.

Uhm... while this might be possible, it would take away a good part from the ranger profession(ok, we're not sure if rangers will still be there, however going around with an animal it's a classic in all RPG games and I'm ready to bet there will be "tamable" animals), because every profession/race will be able to have such companions. Imho the companion will become a sort of substitute for what heroes are now: Anet stated that the game will mostly be solo-able, so the companion will probably be there to make things easier(for example, a caster would greatly benefit from a tank companion and so on). The companion will probably have custom skills and armor(so I assume it won't be an animal) you can change(after all, we got that with heroes), and rumours link "special" companions to monument of devotion/fellowship.
Instead, the "Ranger" will still be able to charm animals, with animals having a smaller role than the companion for obvious reasons..

All the above is pure speculation, but looks like a good guess to me

Egal
18-07-2008, 13:43
It's just an idea, not a suggestion, not even speculation. I just realised that I assumed that the Companion, whatever that may eventually be, would be one of the main races. Occurred to me it might be cool if you could choose to make your companion something other than that. Maybe an animal, maybe a Heket, maybe a skale.

... Has this thread run a little of track ...

I would propose the following :

Different pets (obviously)
Different types of pets do different damage types. Bears do blunt, tigers slashing, moa's piecing.
As each pet attacks it gains its own private adrenaline. Once that is full it can unleash its own special attack. ie: Brutal mauling. Only pet spiders can do a poisonous bite.
Charm animal acts as Sig of Capture. You can charm multiple animals. But only have one with you at a time.
The possibility of a true beast-master, taking multiple pets at once. (ie Heal-as-One and seven pets  )
