View Full Version : GW2 Engine
Does anyone know which engine GW2 will be using?
Or do we have to wait until they finally release their news that was meant to be for 2008?

Proprietary is my guess. Most likely a brand spankin new screamer. I think they'll likely salvage much of GW1's better features.
But I believe it was said early on that they'll be building GW2 from the ground up. Unfortunately we have no clue what's in store, as Arena Net is very secretive about GW2.
for what my sources are telling me, they are upgrading the current GW engine and then add what they want to add.

Hopefully not as WoW has terrible graphics - The more I read though themore it sounds like WoW with guildwars in the title & better graphics >>.

Upgraded GW1 engine.
Hmm, if so, then we won't all have to go out and buy a new computer, just to play. *cough AoC . .*
That would be a practical marketing strategy. As compatible as GW1 but with options to turn up the detail beyond the competitors.
well, the specs will be a bit higher, but not so extreme as going from WoW to LORTO.

I see 2 options,
1. Build a new engine for the game.
Pros: Building there own engine means they can build it how they want it they can improve it with recent technology improvements eg DX10 if they wanted too.
Cons: Significantly increases development time so can add a greater cost. Devs not used to the new engine could have problems using it. Higher specs on PC would be required.
2. Modify the current Engine.
Pros: Able to use an engine the whole team has used over the last few years, shouldnt take too much time to modify unless they go full out on changing every aspect of it. Slightly Higher specs on PC required.
Cons: Using a dated engine which could be limited in the changes made.
Personally I think they should go with option 1 I would rather see a new engine than an outdated one.

Not necessarily. If their programmers know what they're doing then modifying the existing engine would not take more time. Plus they could always make it look better. Look what happened when CoD4 used the Q3 engine.

Yeah. IW wrote their own for use in COD IV.
As for what I've heard about GW2, it's using a (vastly) improved version of the GW engine. Not much point re-inventing the wheel, but its meant to have DX9 and DX10 support. I assume DX8.1 support will be cut.
There's no reason why an improved version of the GW engine would look bad or dated at all. Look at the GW engine itself, and compare Eye of the North to the original Prophecies campaign. It's already come quite a long way.

It's based off of Radiant, which is the Quake 3/4 engine. They reworked the code to fit their own needs. I guess if you change it enough it can qualify as your own proprietary engine. But then again, Radiant for Quake 3 went open source a long time ago.

I wouldn't expect much similarity. The limitations of the old engine are a large part of why they're making GW2 in the first place.

That was the first CoD game. They stuck with entirely proprietary engines from 2 onward.

Q: Will GW2 use an entirely new graphics engine?
A: We'll use the GW1 engine as a foundation of the GW2 engine, but we'll be upgrading and rewriting substantial portions of it to provide a visual experience that players will expect in a sequel to Guild Wars.
From the PCGamer mag (page 34).
It then continues to list the improvements, which basically comes down to every single area of graphical design.
