Guild Wars Winds of Change Part 2 Details

Posted 29/09/11 by

This evening we have details of the Guild Wars Winds of Change Part 2 update which brings more free content to the original game. This new update includes 11  more quests, 5 respawned zones and ‘numerous hidden scenes for players looking to experience the story to the fullest’. This update carries on the story following the introduction of the the Ministry of Purity. Check out the new shots and captions below the backstory.

In the previous instalment, players were introduced to the Ministry of Purity, an organisation that sought to bring peace and order back to an embattled Cantha. The Ministry began their righteous crusade by seeking to purge the land of the Afflicted – horrors unleashed during the events of Guild Wars Factions. The Ministry rallied the people to its cause under the belief that Cantha was a land that did not need heroes; only people with the strength and the will to stand up for themselves. From these simple beginnings, the Ministry grew in size and gained influence as the Afflicted were purged from the lands. People disillusioned with Cantha’s emperor for his inability to protect them looked to the Ministry as a source of hope.

As the players vanquished the last of the Afflicted, the Ministry of Purity soon set their sights on their next target: the gangs of Kaineng; the Jade Brotherhood and the Am Fah. The gangs have long been a threat that has existed within Canthan life – the empire is not strong enough to stop them. The Am Fah and Jade Brotherhood have continuously been at war with each other, and their struggle keeps them from being enough to threaten the empire directly. The three have existed as a system of checks and balances against each other – an uneasy balance of power that threatens to boil over into violence at any given moment. Under the leadership of Minister Reiko, the Ministry of Purity has declared that the gangs’ reign of fear must come to an end, by any means necessary.

In this second instalment of the three-part Winds of Change where the conflict between the Ministry of Purity and the gangs escalates. The Jade Brotherhood and the Am Fah find themselves pushed back and resorting to desperate, destructive measures to retaliate. Some people begin to wonder – is the price being paid for security worth it? Where will the line be drawn for what is considered a threat? The motives of the Ministry of Purity become suspect with the arrival of an Assassin that has historical ties to the Ministry’s leadership.

Guild Wars 2 preview screen shot

ArenaNet is garnering even more mainstream gaming media attention with this preview published at the PCGamer website today. The author Rich McCormic gives his impressions of the game from a recent demo event, hosted by Eric Flannum.

“I don’t know if you noticed, but our dynamic events are very visual.” Yes Eric, I did notice, thanks. Your dynamic events are so visual they tried to eat me. “They don’t require a lot of explanation. Say you run into a city and there are centaurs attacking everyone: you know what to do, right?” And no, the answer isn’t ‘try to climb on their backs and ride them around like a horsey.’

Bitgamer | Interview with Colin Johanson

Posted 27/09/11 by

Also the fellows over at Bitgamer were able to snag Colin Johanson for some face time at Eurogamer Expo. It is a lengthy interview with some new information. For instance, there may be even more Guild Wars novels in the future, after the current trilogy is concluded with “Sea of Sorrows”.

BG: Are you going to carry on with the novelisations?

CJ: We have two out already, and a third being written by one of our in-house writers that’s coming out in the near future. The first book – Ghosts of Ascalon – was nominated for the award for the best fantasy novel of the year, so it’s certainly something we’ve had a really good response to so far and will continue to build on in the future.

Eurogamer | GW2 Preview and talk with Colin Johanson

Posted 27/09/11 by

After giving Guild Wars 2 their Editors’ Game of the Show Award, Eurogamer follows up with an article on their impressions of the GW2 demos and an interview with Colin Johanson about PvP and more.

A delicate class, the mage requires tactical awareness and nimble fingers. Or – in the case of Eurogamer’s Robert Purchese – finding the button for the Elite skill that transforms the mage into a whirling hurricane, knocking other players back, and spamming it with a gleeful look on his face.

ArenaNet Confirms Closed Beta This Year

Posted 27/09/11 by

It has been known for some time that ArenaNet are looking to get the beta up and running this year but there has not been any real confirmation. Speaking to Eurogamer, ArenaNet’ lead content designer Colin Johanson confirmed that the closed Beta will get underway this year stating:

“We’re in closed alpha right now. We’re going to go into closed beta by the end of this year. Based on the outcome of the closed beta, that will determine our open beta schedule. Based on the outcome of the open beta, that’s going to determine our release date.

“If we tear through the beta and everything’s super positive then obviously it’ll come out faster. And if we go into the beta process and we see things we want to change, then we have the luxury of having the time to be able to sit down and fix that stuff.”

The success of the closed Beta will determine the launch of the open Bewta which we would expect to arrive some time early next year.

Eurogamer.net just announced that Guild Wars 2, among 10 worthy nominees, was selected for the Eurogamer Expo 2011 Editor’s Game of the Show Award. Congratulations!

This is what online worlds were always supposed to aim for, and in its showings to date, ArenaNet has yet to put a foot wrong on its ambitious path. Other games at Eurogamer Expo 2011 showed perfections of gaming’s present; Guild Wars 2 was the one to open a window to its future.

ImagineFX Spotlights ArenaNet Artists

Posted 22/09/11 by

Once more, the artists of ArenaNet are recognized as some of the best talent in the industry. The latest issue of the digital art magazine ImagineFX features a stunnig piece of early concept art of the Sylvari Nightmare court, by Hyojiin Ahn, on the cover. Inside the issue features content and interviews from many of ArenaNet’s talent, such as Daniel Dociu, Kekai Kotaki and Kristen Perry.

Rock Paper Shotgun | Asura Thing? A Guild Wars 2 Preview

Posted 21/09/11 by

Just today Alec Meer over at Rock Paper Shotgun published a preview on Guild Wars 2, using a play on words to allude to the way GW2 is looking. He talks about the art, the personalized biography and story, dynamic events, swimming, and elite content.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve walked into a room with a monitor and a nervously-smiling man at one end and been told I’m about to see the future of MMOs. I smile back politely, and the same old dance begins. Too often, I feel a numbness, a struggle to reconcile professionally wanting to know what’s going on with personally despairing of the idea of giving over dozens of hours of my life to what’s so often a mess of cloned features and over-sold, under-realised promises. My most recent sighting of Guild Wars 2 really did break through that numbness, made me sit up straight and pay full attention
