Putting the Spotlight on the Elementalist’s Conjures

Posted 16/05/13 by

CJFlameMost Elementalist players will agree that the non-elite conjure skills are not exactly the Elementalist’s strongest tools. In this article I will take a closer look at these skills and analyse why that is, and perhaps suggest a way to make them better.

The Elementalist is the only Guild Wars 2 profession that has access to the skill types Conjures and Glyphs. And while the Glyphs include a range of skills both great (e.g. Glyph of Storms) and bad (e.g. Glyph of Renewal), the Conjure skills are generally seen as inferior and not worth equipping on your skill bar. The elite conjure Fiery Greatsword is, today, the only exception to this rule.

How Do the Conjure Skills Work?

The conjure skills Conjure Flame Axe, Conjure Frost Bow, Conjure Lightning Hammer & Conjure Earth Shield are all utility skills, which are slotted to the  utility section of your skill bar. Unlike Signets conjure skills have no passive effects.

Once an Elemenalist casts a conjure skill a conjured weapon manifests in her hands, replacing her weapon skills with the five skills of the conjure. A second conjured weapon is spawned at the same time, to be placed on the battlefield for any ally to pick up. Once someone picks up a conjured weapon, it will remain in their hands until they drop it, or its 15 charges are used. The trait “Conjurer” adds 10 additional charges to the weapon.

Missed Ancient Karka Event Chests – Shipping now!

Posted 08/12/12 by

ArenaNet is shipping the Lost Shore event item – the Ancient Karka Chest – to those that missed it, due to disconnects or “no-reward-occurences”, now. So if you participated in the event and did not get the reward chest, there is a good chance you will find it in an in-game mail during the next few hours.
Not all mails are sent at the same time, so don’t panic if you did not get your mail yet, while other people have already received it.

13 skills unlocked, so many to go!

Posted 25/11/12 by

13skills

After a few months of beta testing and three months after the release in August, the GWO Elementalist forum has “unlocked” thirteen skills of Guild Wars 2′s attunement swapping profession.

What are those “Skills of Interest”, you might ask?

On a regular basis, Gorani – the forum’s moderator – takes an in-depth look at a skill, its current use and stats, its history since the early betas and how well it does compared to other skills. Does is have synergies with traits, is it more useful in PvP or PvE? This and more, you can find on the “Skills of Interest” threads.
You are invited to leave a comment and join the discussion. Share your expertise with the community and perhaps learn something new, too.

Swap to the Elementalist forum now and check out the latest addition to the series:

Conditions against Power & Criticals

Posted 09/08/12 by

This new [Guide] thread in the Elementalist forum was made to help you balance your capabilities at dealing condition based damage, “raw” damage fuelled by your Power attribute, or going for critical strikes against your opponents. It also covers some damage formulas, which at the current state of the game are not all officially confirmed by Arena.Net.
If you are not an Elementalist, you will find ideas how to transfer those numbers to your profession’s trait line.

Your Voice Of Tyria – Do Your Own !

Posted 17/06/12 by

Voice acting is a “hot iron” in video games. Game developers can easily burn the fans of a game with the choice of the voice actors and how the voice acting is actually done. Localization can even do more harm with silly translations and voices that sound very differently than the original English voice actors.
Guild Wars 2 is not so different to other games. There is a huge amount of dialogue for the personal story line cut scenes, there is ambient chatter in the cities and of course we all expect the different races to sound differently. Quite some time ago, Arena.Net released a “behind the scenes” video of the voice recording of the iconic characters, like Rytlock, Caithe, Logan and Zoija. Arena.Net has hired long time professional voice actors, like Kari Wahlgren for that job, as well as Felicia Day, who is mostly known for being adorably geeky on internet web shows and TV (and polarizing the community to a “love it or hate it” faction, too).

After two beta weekends, a lot of people had the chance to hear voice acting in Guild Wars 2. Did you like it so far? Are the Charr sounding like you thought they should sound? Or the Norn, Asura and the few Sylvari we could encounter? Did the “Races of Tyria” blog series, on the official Arena.Net site, feature the tone or accent you expected?
I did a little piece of voice acting myself, to encourage you to do the same as a video response on GWOnline.net’s YouTube page and talk about how you feel about the voice acting so far here on the forum or in a comment down below.

BWE2 – What I Did This Weekend – Gorani

Posted 10/06/12 by

First of all, I decided to create a Thief to find another back-up profession to my main. I chose a Norn and went out to explore the “starter world”. I had done the “heart quests” before, so nothing really new caught my attention in the Foothills. My personal story wrapped around Eir and a weapon smith that needed Deldrimor steel to forge a heroic weapon. I liked the concept of “Initiative” for the Thief profession. It took a while to find the weapon combinations that worked best for me. I settled for a melee set with a sword and off hand dagger and the short bow. The first set allowed me to slash & shadow step a lot, making the Jotun I had to fight dizzy, the ranged weapon to kite and cripple anything that would reach me.

The steal mechanic is not that great, IMO. At range, I used it to steal from the foe with a shadow step, fire off the stolen ability (not really caring what is was – some effect that would help me I assumed) and slicing my foe with the sword after that point. Compared to a Guardian’s Virtues or the Attunement swapping of the Elementalist, stealing was less exciting and useful. Perhaps you need more practice to appreciate it.

Talking about the Guardian and the Elementalist that survived from last BWE: The Guardian checked some hearts in the Charr lands, fighting ghosts, serving beverages to thirsty soldiers and getting her Blood Legion war band to stop infiltrators with cow bombs (yes, you have read correctly). I spend a lot of time burning every copper ore I could find on armor crafting and jewellery (Rhonwyn got some nice things made out of pearls on Sunday afternoon). The Elementalist explored all Points of Interest in Lion’s Arch, and checked all new changes for you (see updates in the Elementalist Forum). Finally I fought some battles in WvWvW with her and did OK, earning a Badge of Honor.

The item color coding of Guild Wars 2

Posted 16/05/12 by

Just a little news item for your information. Guild Wars 2 introduces a new color coding for its items that does not follow the footsteps of the original Guild Wars. It looks like this:

Most of the PvE drops we have seen in the beta events so far have been basic whites and fine blues – and the occasional green. Those are the items crafting professions can make, too. About the higher level and rarity items, I have no information right now, but you can expect them to be dungeon rewards and max level items, that are sold as race exclusive items in the home towns and at those vendors in LA, who stand next to Dugal Keane. I could be wrong, but a PvP character should get some items of the rare, exotic and legendary kind from the glory and karma vendors in the Mists.

Where Will All Your Money Go?

Posted 29/04/12 by

For everybody that played during the beta weekend, it is obvious where all the money from players is supposed to go: To some Arena.Net vault managed by Asura and guarded by little golems.

Unlike the first Guild Wars, where you don’t have to spend a lot of money just to play, Guild Wars 2 will be a game where you will have to spend a lot more “in-game currency”.
Money drops from foes are far less frequent in GW2, so you have to salvage & gather/harvest a lot if items for your every day life on Tyria. Of course, you might argue, doing your personal story quests, dynamic events lines and “heart-quests” rewards you with coin, too. But there are a lot of things that a pure money sinks: First the gathering & crafting. The pick, sickle & axe are the first tools you have to buy to be able to get a single ore, onion or log. Then there are all the way points, which charge just a small fee, but that adds up with other stuff, like damaged armor (especially in WvWvW, where your income is pretty bad), unlocking the use of traits for 10 silver, re-setting trait points, changing crafting professions …

The thing that bugged me the most and I am honest with that, is the limited access to the in-game bank account, which can only be done when you are in one of the big cities, like Lion’s Arch. Accessing the bank from anywhere else, requires the use of an Asura Bank portal, which costs 35 gems from the “commerce tab”. Yes, I can send basic materials, like jute or ore through a “free service” towards my storage tab in the bank, but I had hoped that at least some bank access would be scattered on the maps as well.

With all those commercial additions around gems, including the server swap for 1.800 gems, Arena.Net has left the “buy once, play free”-road and set its feet on the muddy path of “pay to play”. Not everybody will be happy about that choice.

WvW as Level 1? Checking Arena.net’s Claim

Posted 28/04/12 by

This morning, after not being able to log on last evening, I wanted to check out WvWvW, which was not very populated during the March press beta, we at GWO could attend.

How much would the lag I experienced every time when meeting more than 10 people affect WvWvW?

A lot. I had the impression, that once you got into a major fight, e.g. at a gate of a tower, the team with less lag would win the Zerg rush. I lagged so much (being on the EU Vabbi Server), that when I saw (well felt) the tide turning, I dodge rolled back two times and hoped I would not be downed by then. Skilled game play, like knocking down foes that prepare a big attack was not possible. I basically started to hit buttons.

Can you really start out as a Level 1 character?

As you can see on the screen shot, I tried, but having so few skills available – and in my case not all attunements unlocked – is a great hindrance to defeat your foes that have utility skills and better items. It would not have mattered if you could react without lag, but as I have written in the last paragraph: Push 1-2-3 has happened a lot.
It was also incredibly difficult to pick up loot from other players (the auto-loot from the last beta is gone on default, but you can enable it in the options. I discovered that too late) and I hardly got any coin for defeating foes – but had to pay for armor repair a lot more.

Will I return to WvWvW?

Sure, yes, but right now it is not the best experience to start with.

Beta Forums Slowly Shaping

Posted 21/04/12 by

People already having registered their pre-purchase of Guild Wars 2, might have tried to access the official forums. Today, those look a little less “work in progress” than the last few days, although actual forum links are not working yet. You can access the “Account section” (although I did not dare to try to change my password) and the “Mail section” which showed me I am allowed to send one PM (which was kind of strange). All the other links you can see on the picture below are linking to sites we already know, like the blog, the wiki and the www.guildwars2.com site.
We will have to wait and see, if Arena.Net manages to get the forums up and running by next Friday, when the beta event will start.
