Guest Blog: Demajen – The Importance of Community

Posted 06/06/12 by

We are very happy to present our second guest blog here at GWOnline, this one by Jon Burrage, also known as Demajen. Demajen started blogging about Guild Wars 2 earlier this year, often analysing Guild Wars 2 features in the context of other MMO games, and always with a personal touch. We greatly enjoy his writing, and hope that you will too.

Gaming Communities Are a Strange Beast.

I started gaming before the internet had taken off. Back in the early 90s, before I’d even heard of a 56K modem, gaming was something I did with my friends, with one TV and multiple controllers. Many many hours were spent crowded round the TV in our house’s living room with three of my closest friends and a N64, playing splitscreen GoldenEye.

Before that, my best friend and I would often huddle in front of his A500 Amiga trying to best levels in 2D sidescrollers.

Sure, this shows my age, but it also reminds me of a simpler time in gaming, where a community of likeminded individuals came together face-to-face to indulge in a shared interest.

An Inspirational Story of Guild Wars and Life

Posted 16/05/12 by

In their latest blog post published earlier today, ArenaNet’s Regina Buenaobra shares the inspirational tale of long-time Guild Wars fan Kelly, who together with her dog Anna walked from Maine to California. Kelly goes online under the name Ameranth. Ameranth is now also a Sylvari Ranger NPC in Guild Wars 2 who goes on an epic walkabout of Tyria, experiencing the landscape first hand from end to end. Oh, and her dog is called Anna.

I found Kelly to be an incredibly down-to-earth, thoughtful young lady who has lived more in her life than many people twice her age. I’ve always wanted to drive across the country in an RV, but she made me realize it’d be far more profound—albeit a lot more time consuming—to walk it.

Mike O’Brien on the Guild Wars 2 Beta

Posted 11/05/12 by

Mike O’Brien talks about the first Guild Wars 2 open beta–from server capacity to player feedback.

“[...] even with 48 worlds we didn’t have enough server capacity to meet the huge demand.”

“This was definitely a real beta, designed to find problems, gather player input, and learn what work still needs to be done before we ship the game. We’ve listened to your feedback and we’re making some important improvements to the game for the next Beta Weekend Event.”

Guild Wars 2 on Linux – It Works!

Posted 02/05/12 by

I got the question in Guild Chat on Saturday when I said that I was playing Guild Wars 2 on a Linux computer, “Why?”. I explained that I would like to play my new favorite game on my favorite operating system and I anyway do not have a Window computer available. Not one with gaming hardware at least. I don’t think they saw the point.

In any case, this article is for those of you, who like me, like their games on Linux. Or those of you who are curious about gaming on Linux, but never took the leap.

So does Guild Wars 2 work on Linux? Short version is YES! Long version is after the jump, where I go into the nitty gritty details.

For Future Refugees of Azeroth and The Republic

Raye Lestrange taking a break from the fighting to enjoy Divinity's Reach.

You know how some games are announced, hailed as the savior of the genre, hyped to absolutely absurd levels, and praised at every turn? Then the time comes and you’re finally able to play it, only to find that it completely sucks, is an entirely different game from what the previews promised, and has crushed all the excitement you had for it?

Well relax, Guild Wars 2 is absolutely nothing like that.

GWO Interview With ArenaNet – Beta Insights and Skills

Posted 05/04/12 by

Get back here! Thief crippling a foe in the Guild Wars 2 closed beta.

GWOnline is very happy to present this interview with ArenaNet about their insights from the beta process so far, and how they go about balancing the game now that we are getting ever closer to release.

We were particularly excited to learn that ArenaNet can roll out and test changes to 100 skills in mere minutes, allowing for quicker and more responsive balancing in Guild Wars 2. Oh, and that there are ghost cows, and we will get to fight them! Questions are answered by Mike Ferguson (Game Designer), Annie VanderMeer Mitsoda (Game Designer), Theo Nguyen (Game Designer), Leif Chappelle (Game Designer), Eric Flannum (Lead Game Designer) and Isaiah Cartwright (Lead Systems Designer).

GWOnline: After you finished the first round of closed beta, what was the general feedback, and what insights did you gain?

Mike: Overall the feedback was extremely positive. For WvW, the beta was extremely useful for us as we were able to learn a lot from playing with a large population over the weekend. After the beta ended we immediately went to work on implementing various updates to make siege weapons more effective, we’re optimizing various systems that were extremely taxing on our servers, and we’re looking at various ways to make WvW easier to learn for people who are first starting out.

Annie: One big thing I think the story team took away from the beta is how players react to the information we gave them – negative points where the seams between quests were showing, points where they wanted information that wasn’t there, but also positive ones from how people responded to our use of cinematics, scenes, and “flythroughs” (little staged cinematics more typical of your standard game cutscene). It felt like we were definitely on the right track with hitting the high notes of the story. Beyond that, responses to characters and the balance of boss fights was definitely useful feedback – it’s always fun to see the aggregate response of players to certain elements of the game, especially trickier subjects like tragedy or humor. I now have proof that fighting ghost cows is just as hilarious as I always thought it was!

Theo: As Mike said, response from the beta has been largely positive. As with any feedback cycle, we’ve received a multitude of important insights that are too varied to discuss individually at this point. Needless to say, we’re working on several concerns that were brought up. To give an example, the rate at which players level is something we’re keeping a close eye on. Numbers balance can make or break a game. We feel it’s essential to get this right.

Leif: The beta weekend was a really great milestone for our development, as it was an opportunity to test server load and look at just how everything comes together. One of the most important insights gained was how all the content flows and how well it matches up to our intentions. During a normal week of design, we on the story team are focused intently on getting the balance for our instanced areas just right, but that’s only one part of the overall experience. When you have the ability to jump from one story step to the next, you might lose sight of how you actually get there. Yet between the events, renown hearts, and skill challenges, I often found myself pleasantly surprised when looking down at my map and realizing I was right where I needed to be just by following people and engaging with the world.

The Aesthetics and Creative Side of GW2 – Part 1: Visuals

Posted 04/04/12 by

The other weekend, I had the honor of joining GWO’s Guild Wars 2 press beta team. This was actually my very first time playing Guild Wars 2, and so far I liked what I witnessed in the game. The improvements and changes such as the new skill system, underwater combat, and PvP format are attractive, but as one artist I cannot help but focus on the in-game aesthetic aspects of Guild Wars 2.

In inspecting the artistic parts of Guild Wars 2, I have been remembering about a video clip from some time ago that the overall theme of the game that the designers were aiming for was a painting-like feel, instead of the realistic feel that most other 3D games opt for. With many great artists on board in the Guild Wars 2 development team and witnessing the execution of this plan in person, I have to say that the plan is a great success. As with any other game, Guild Wars 2 has a lot of artistic components to them, so I am going to go through a few of them and inspect one item at a time.
