Putting the Spotlight on the Elementalist’s Conjures

Posted 16/05/13 by

CJFlameMost Elementalist players will agree that the non-elite conjure skills are not exactly the Elementalist’s strongest tools. In this article I will take a closer look at these skills and analyse why that is, and perhaps suggest a way to make them better.

The Elementalist is the only Guild Wars 2 profession that has access to the skill types Conjures and Glyphs. And while the Glyphs include a range of skills both great (e.g. Glyph of Storms) and bad (e.g. Glyph of Renewal), the Conjure skills are generally seen as inferior and not worth equipping on your skill bar. The elite conjure Fiery Greatsword is, today, the only exception to this rule.

How Do the Conjure Skills Work?

The conjure skills Conjure Flame Axe, Conjure Frost Bow, Conjure Lightning Hammer & Conjure Earth Shield are all utility skills, which are slotted to the  utility section of your skill bar. Unlike Signets conjure skills have no passive effects.

Once an Elemenalist casts a conjure skill a conjured weapon manifests in her hands, replacing her weapon skills with the five skills of the conjure. A second conjured weapon is spawned at the same time, to be placed on the battlefield for any ally to pick up. Once someone picks up a conjured weapon, it will remain in their hands until they drop it, or its 15 charges are used. The trait “Conjurer” adds 10 additional charges to the weapon.

13 skills unlocked, so many to go!

13skills

After a few months of beta testing and three months after the release in August, the GWO Elementalist forum has “unlocked” thirteen skills of Guild Wars 2′s attunement swapping profession.

What are those “Skills of Interest”, you might ask?

On a regular basis, Gorani – the forum’s moderator – takes an in-depth look at a skill, its current use and stats, its history since the early betas and how well it does compared to other skills. Does is have synergies with traits, is it more useful in PvP or PvE? This and more, you can find on the “Skills of Interest” threads.
You are invited to leave a comment and join the discussion. Share your expertise with the community and perhaps learn something new, too.

Swap to the Elementalist forum now and check out the latest addition to the series:

Conditions against Power & Criticals

Posted 09/08/12 by

This new [Guide] thread in the Elementalist forum was made to help you balance your capabilities at dealing condition based damage, “raw” damage fuelled by your Power attribute, or going for critical strikes against your opponents. It also covers some damage formulas, which at the current state of the game are not all officially confirmed by Arena.Net.
If you are not an Elementalist, you will find ideas how to transfer those numbers to your profession’s trait line.

Is There a Range For Everyone?

Posted 29/03/12 by

ElementalistI have played the Elementalist now for a second day (still unlocking skills on weapons, currently the Focus as the final weapon) and I have to say that I am starting to get a favourite range: not too close, not too far.

Switching to main hand dagger this morning showed me how limited the range with this weapon is. You pretty much have to run up close to the enemy, which is a bad idea, once warrior e.g. start knocking down stuff. Water with Vapor Blade was the element which I liked best there: the skill offered a good range and the vulnerability stacking was nifty. But as a final verdict: I liked to be a little bit less marked with a “hit me” sign.

The staff, which I have talked about before is an OK weapon, but using the #1 skill most of the time, while #3-#5 recharge is not as engaging as the midrange: Scepter + Dagger or Focus. The range of your Scepter skills is decent, which provides you with the ability to kite on the mid-line of bigger battles and you have a much better battlefield awareness than standing up font and being distracted by all the flashy skill effects around you.

Conclusion on Best Range to Play an Elementalist

Mid range is the most fun, as it requires active game play with fast recharging skills plus a good overview over the battlefield.

Swapping Attunements – More Fun for Elementalists?

Posted 27/03/12 by

ElementalistI started a new Norn Elementalist this beta weekend and discovered something worth talking about – the speed of the skill unlocks of weapon skills.

For most professions, this probably works pretty fast: They have a starter weapon, they unlock three skills – they get an off hand weapon (reward for first storyline quest, bought or found) – and they unlock the next two skills.

Due to the nature of the profession, the Elementalist has not only to unlock those five skills, but a total of twenty skills across all his four attunements.

Charr Beta Gameplay Footage #2

Posted 22/02/12 by

I have finally had some time to dig through the video today and I have put together a couple more videos to show my Charr Elementalist out questing and dropping in on a couple of events down at the tar pits and then taking on the Flame Legion. The second of the two videos is a good example of the downed mechanic (not that I wanted to die or anything ;). Check out the second video after the break, and if you have GW2 videos shot from the w/e, add them to the GWOnline TV community resource.!

Head to Head: Engineer vs Elementalist

Posted 25/01/12 by

People who know me know I love summons. But more than that, I do love hybrids. Guild Wars 2 will offer a lot of ways to play hybrid with all professions, especially with the weapon swaps. However, the two most flexible on-the-fly hybrids have one thing in common… they do not have a weapon swap.

The elementalist swaps between 4 elements instead of swapping weapons, effectively changing his 5 weapon skills therefore changing his role during combat. He thus has access to 5*4=20 weapon skills during combat. The engineer uses kits that also changes his 5 weapon skills. He can equip up to 4 kits, giving him up to (4+1)*5=25 weapon skills during combat.

Players who like to adapt to the situation or to the needs of the team will want to keep an eye on those two professions.

Interview with the Live Team – Part 2, The Elementalist update

Posted 01/01/12 by

Here is the second and final part of the interview we had with the Guild Wars Live Team. Robert Gee talks about the changes we will see  to the Elementalist profession in Guild Wars in the near future. This update was originally scheduled to be released before Wintersday, but it got pushed back, so it might not interfere with the festivities. There also has been a “leak” about the changes, so we already know what to expect. We anticipated the update and handed in the questions before the leak, so keep that in mind when reading. Enjoy.

Robert GeeGWOnline.net:  Some say a long overdue – update to the Elementalist is rumored to be out soon. Energy Storage is the Elementalist’s exclusive attribute. What changes are you making to this attribute to give the profession an extra punch versus high armor foes in the upcoming update or will it be completely untouched?

Robert Gee: We’ve seen this suggestion pop up several times before and during the elementalist update, however this isn’t something we really considered from a balance standpoint.  Buffing Energy Storage directly would have a direct effect on monsters which could affect the difficulty of the entire game.  Instead we chose to adjust the armor and health values of high armor foes in hard mode.  Doing this addresses the low damage that Elementalists do in this mode without affecting the difficulty of normal mode or their power in PvP.

30 days of Fire

30 Days of Fire

I have decided that we have to start more things here on the site for players to keep themselves happy in Guild Wars. So I thought I could initiate another topic based thread about screen shots and pictures. That’s why I created a new thread in the Profession forum and proclaimed “30 days of Fire”, the start of a gallery based on that element.

Please contribute and add pictures to the thread. Those can be spell effects, map environments, creatures living in Tyria or armor and equipment with a fiery theme. Search your hard discs for hidden scorching treasures or take new screen shots of blistering awesomeness.

I hope we can get a lot of nice pictures there within the next 30 days (when the next featured element will rise from the ashes) and perhaps, if the Elementalist isn’t your favorite, you will start something similar four your profession of choice. 30 Hammers to fall?
