Asura Week Day 5

Posted 16/09/11 by

On the final day of Asura Week, Ree Soesbee shares a piece of Asura lore. In a short story Ree paints another vivid picture of life in Tyria, this time about an asuran Krewe on a mission going pearshaped.

By the time they burst out into the main skritt cavern, it was already a free-for-all. The wargolem’s crystals flashed and shimmered, bolts flying in every direction. It was a rabid explosion of destruction, uncontrolled and completely unhampered by any attempt at silly things like aiming or conservation of energy.

The blog post also goes into more depth about the Asuran society; the Arcane Council, the Krews, the Colleges – Statics, Dynamics and Synergestics – as well as the organization called the Inquest. While the colleges want power to come closer to the truth of the Great Alchemy, the Inquest want power for its own sake, believing that if they can reach ultimate power, they can gain control of all of Tyria.

Asura Week Day 4

Posted 15/09/11 by

On the fourth day of Asura Week, ArenaNet first updated the Asura page on the official Guild Wars 2 website. There is new lore, new wallpapers and screen shots, as well as a stunning video from the asura home city, Rata Sum (bonus points for those who know what the letters in that name can be rearranged as). The video shows a technologically advanced city, far from the brutish tech employed by the Charr. The asuran technology is sleek and clean, but no less dangerous. We also get a first look at what looks like asuran computer screens.

The diminutive asura are the smartest people in Tyria. Just ask them; they will tell you. Once, they were the undisputed masters of a powerful underground civilization, but were driven to the surface by the Great Destroyer, the herald of the Elder Dragon Primordus.

Then Lead Animator Heron Prior talked animation in a blog post with video examples of unique asura animations.

Some players will undoubtedly scowl and grumble that the asura have been reduced to comic relief and the race has been ruined. Instead, we feel we’ve brought to the forefront something that was always at the core of their collective personality. These are the smack-talking creators of the “Genius-Operated Living Enchanted Manifestations” after all. So, set aside your preconceptions and take an asura for a spin. We think you’ll come to love the little guys as much as we do.

Asura Home

On the second day of Asura week, ArenaNet once again give us double the fun with two blog posts.

First out was Matt Barret who continues where he left off yesterday, giving us details about the design of the Asuran environments. He explains how the Asura are very far away from the goblin archetype, and how this also comes across in their architechture. The Asura are ambitious, mad scientists, and it shows.

Talking about mad, the second blog post of the day was the first ever taste of an Asura advice column. Obviously, being a being of superior intellect, anyone else would be mad to not take an Asura’s advice. Oh, and if you want some Asura advice for your own problems, the technologically advanced Asura has made a Twitter account to be able to help as many as possible.

Asura Week Day 1

Posted 14/09/11 by

At the first day of Asura week, ArenaNet spoiled us with not one, but two blog posts.

First out was Matt Barret, who gave us a glimpse on what went into designing the Asura. From an almost Skritt-like creature to the Asura we love-hate today. He then ends the blog post with an absolutely breathtaking narrated film where he shows us how he draws an Asura, from rough sketch to finished arrogant face.

The second blog post of the day was a short story of an Asura named Flummox and his Sylvari assistant and their run-in with some highway Jotuns. And one Mr. Sparkles. The story is penned by the always excellent Jeff Grubb.
