No Guild Wars 2 at Gamescom

Posted 07/08/12 by

Comes as no huge surprise this with the launch looming but there will be no Guild Wars 2 at Gamescom next week in Germany. In an update regarding summer events ArenaNet commented:

Some of you have asked which trade shows ArenaNet will attend this summer, so let me give you an update.

Right now, the entire studio is focused on one thing: the launch of Guild Wars 2 on August 28. As a result, our tradeshow presence this year will be limited.

gamescom (Aug 15-19) – Members of the ArenaNet Community Team will be at gamescom this year, but unlike last year, we will not have a playable demo of Guild Wars 2. Our booth will be a chillout zone—the calm before the storm—so swing by, say hi, and get free drinks.

Gamestop Expo (Aug 29)- We will be at the Gamestop Expo at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, TX on August 29 from 11:00 – 16:00. We will have 16 Guild Wars 2 demo stations at the show, 8 of which will be on the Alienware Hummer.

PAX (Aug 31-Sep 2) Since PAX Prime takes place the week of launch, we will not be attending PAX this year. But if you are in the Seattle area, we will have a party on Saturday September 1 to celebrate our launch. We’ll have more information at a later date.

PvP Walkthrough Video

Posted 21/08/11 by

A new video showing the PvP that was on show at Gamescom has been released by Gamespot. This was the same PvP zone that was shown on the press briefing and it did look pretty cool. As you know by now, this PvP is more in the style of an FPS with individual servers which can be selected from the a list of current games. I’ll go more into this in my report which is incoming shortly but give this video a watch as it does explain how the system will work.

Guild Wars 2 at Gamescom

Posted 21/08/11 by

Well it’s been a mad week and I made it back from Gamescom in one piece. There’s a lot to catch up on with regards to what was on show this year as ArenaNet were showing quite a few new features such as the PvP, character customisation and the Sylvari. I am in the process of sifting through all the coverage from this year’s GamesCom but I will say that on Wednesday I saw a total of seven MMOs which are still to come out and I can safely say that Guild Wars 2 is THE one to watch, it was by far the most impressive based on what ArenaNet were showing at Gamescom. I think if you’re waiting for GW2 over any other MMO the wait will be worth it. I was pretty much blown away by the quality of the game and I saw a lot of MMOs at the show.

Just as a recap, community have been keeping abreast of all the videos that have popped up, some great quality, some not so great, but you can never have enough GW2 right? Keep an eye on this thread. Do watch the press demo if you haven’t already, and I will say my demo was slightly different to the one below. I have also posted up some shots I snapped at the show, some GW2 related and some other pics just for fun :)

The Gamescom Demo Explained

Posted 16/08/11 by

It’s almost time for Gamescom to really kick off and I have just packed my bags here and fly out tomorrow :) ArenaNet’s John Peters has added a lengthy post to the ArenaNet Blog which specifically looks at what will be on show.

Gamescom is a pretty big deal for ArenaNet this year as they are unveiling not only the Sylvari bue also important features such as PvP and character customisation which I know many of you will want to know more about.

Here’s a snip from John on that:

You can now try out our character customization. We have technology to adjust body types, allowing for stocky, skinny, and muscular characters. Each race has its own unique set of options, including charr horns, norn tattoos, and asura ears. There is a large variety of faces and hairstyles, and you can even customize facial features, including five sliders just for your human character’s nose!

Enjoy Gamescom if  you are going and I’ll try to behave while I am over in Germany ;)

ArenaNet Gears up for GamesCom

Posted 29/07/11 by

GameCom is apretty big deal when it comes to gaming conventions, more so that E3 these days thanks to the fact consumers can attend. ArenaNet always put on a good show at GamesCom and this year looks to be no exception.

As we mentioned last week, a new build will be on show and this is what attendees can look forward, not least PvP! I am all set to check the game out ad it will be the first time in along time since I saw Guild Wars 2 so I’m pretty excited :)

  • Seven professions – Play all seven professions that we’ve revealed so far: engineer, thief, guardian, necromancer, ranger, warrior, and elementalist.
  • Charr starter experience – For the first time, you can forge your destiny as a member of the Iron, Ash, or Blood Legion in our charr starter area. You can also choose to play the human and norn starting experience as well.
  • Mid level demo – As always, we’ve prepared a higher level demo experience for players who want a challenge. Face powerful Orrian enemies on land, engage them in battle underwater and face off against a new boss.
  • Sylvari and asura – Did I mention that you’ll be playing sylvari and asura characters for this high level content? Yes, for the first time, players will be able to get their hands on these unique races – believe me, they are impressive!
  • Character appearance customization – Also for the first time, you’ll be able to play around with our character appearance customization feature and control the way your character looks.
  • PvP – Last but certainly not least, we’re premiering Guild Wars 2 Player vs Player (PvP) at gamescom! Swing by the ESL booth and head to the Guild Wars 2 area to get your exclusive hands-on PvP experience. Also check out our periodic exhibition matches that pit our valiant team of ArenaNet developers against the European guild BOON Control on the ESL center stage!
