Mystic Forge: it's like recycling, but better

The beta weekend #2 is coming soon, and this means a big download (nearly 50% the size of the initial download). But with this comes many goodies.

  • WvW now has an underground dungeon area.
  • WvW has more PvE-like events and skill challenges.
  • Mystic Forge lets you donate items and get random stuff in return
  • A new level 25-35 area was added near Lion’s Arch.
  • Catacombs dungeon is open to visitors.
  • UI and combat has been improved.

A Weekend in World vs World.

The chokepoint and one keep.

The chokepoint and one keep.

World vs World vs World (WvWvW), shortened to WvW, is ArenaNet’s version of large-scale war. I spent all my playable time this last BWE to try it and report on it. And I loved it. I’m still a PvE player at heart, but I will be returning to WvW quite a bit.

In Guild Wars terms, WvW is like you take an Alliance Battle, you stick it to a Jade Quarry or two, then put a few Fort Aspenwood here and there except whoever beats the fort gets to keep it, and then just for fun you throw in a few PvE dynamic events in the whole mess. Add mountains and crevasses. Then you sprinkle generously with players. And then when you think you can’t add more players, you add a bucket-load more of them. And a bunch of monsters while at it.

Oh, and then you make it massively bigger. Maps are huge.

Top 10 Meta-Reasons Guild Wars 2 is a 10

Dreams of a Sylvari Mesmer

Dreams of a Sylvari Mesmer

A lot of the same reasons come up when you see people’s top 10: no subscription fee, low grind, high replay value, AAA, dynamic events, WvW, visceral combat… however, Guild Wars 2 isn’t a grocery list of gimmicks, rather, those features are the tip of the iceberg that is ArenaNet’s design philosophy. That philosophy permeates the whole construction of Guild Wars 2, from the broad strokes (pun intended) to the little details.

Here, I review what I think are the top 10 meta-reasons why Guild Wars 2 is interesting, and give some representative examples of how each meta-reason permeates itself into a wide range of design decisions. It is not an exhaustive list, because I hope to finish writing this article before Guild Wars 2 is released.

Guild Wars 2 isn’t a collection of gimmicks… but rather a powerful vision that will change the very course of MMORPGs for years to come.

ArenaNet Confirms Closed Beta This Year

Posted 27/09/11 by

It has been known for some time that ArenaNet are looking to get the beta up and running this year but there has not been any real confirmation. Speaking to Eurogamer, ArenaNet’ lead content designer Colin Johanson confirmed that the closed Beta will get underway this year stating:

“We’re in closed alpha right now. We’re going to go into closed beta by the end of this year. Based on the outcome of the closed beta, that will determine our open beta schedule. Based on the outcome of the open beta, that’s going to determine our release date.

“If we tear through the beta and everything’s super positive then obviously it’ll come out faster. And if we go into the beta process and we see things we want to change, then we have the luxury of having the time to be able to sit down and fix that stuff.”

The success of the closed Beta will determine the launch of the open Bewta which we would expect to arrive some time early next year.
