10 Tips to playing Guild Wars 2 better

Thief is a good profession to learn to play.

Thief is a good profession to learn to play.

I create the opportunity for learning, so that I can keep improving. I do that by seeking ways to challenge myself on specific gameplay skills. Here’s 10 ways you can use to keep learning too.

10 Trigger combos

You can trigger combos by yourself on many professions by using a skill that creates a combo field, then using a skill that triggers it. Self-triggered combos is a good way to learn and practice which of your own skills are what part of a combo. Sometimes, you can combo skills differently to trigger different effects like defensive or offensive effects. Once you learn that, expand your combo knowledge by triggering combos with other players either by triggering their fields, or by setting up fields where they will naturally trigger them.

You can likewise take some time to learn how to combine skill effects. Breaking armors is good just before doing high dps. Or snaring is good before hitting those large AoE’s.

6 Professions I Will Play in Guild Wars 2

Posted 18/08/12 by

I'll play 6 of those. The other 2 are good too.

I'll play 6 of those. The other 2 are good too.

I’m an alt-a-holic. But not just that, I do feel that professions in Guild Wars 2 are unique enough from each other that there is much replay value in playing multiple characters. So I narrowed down my list of personal must-play professions to 6.

Quick math, that means I won’t play 2 professions. Spoiler: it’s the thief and warrior. Why not? Well, I’ve never been that into the rogue/assassin gameplay, and I can do my warrioring on other professions already. I tried thief and warrior, they are fun. Maybe once I finish up with my first 6 choices. So without delay…

7 Unique Skill Types in Guild Wars 2

Maybe I should have made a charr mesmer instead!

Maybe I should have made a charr mesmer instead!

Every new MMORPG claims to re-invent the wheel to get new customers. But many have failed to live up to their own generated hype. Here I discuss 7 skill types that, while not entirely new to the MMORPG genre, have been considerably re-worked and re-tooled, making them feel fresh, fresh, exciting!

Although I think the addition of dodging was also a big change, I will dodge that discussion for now. But keep in mind that in Guild Wars 2, you can dodge.

The Mesmer Experience ™

Mesmer stacking hexes

I admit it, the Mesmer was not my favorite profession in Guild Wars. I had a love-hate relationship. I did love what the profession stood for, what it did, and how it did it. I just never really got into it, mainly because it had ways of making me feel useless. I had fun with it in both PvE and plenty of PvP, but it had enough frustrating times that I never actually got to the point of loving it.

Having experienced the Mesmer in Guild Wars 2, here’s a dispassionate and totally objective assessment of the profession: I loved it. Much more than I thought I would, honestly. It was going to be low on my priority list, but now that I got to play it, it likely has been bumped a few notches. I think they really fixed everything that was wrong with the Mesmer from Guild Wars, and yet stayed really close to what the Mesmer stands for. They managed to stay true to the Mesmer gameplay.

Traits: An Analysis

Posted 14/03/12 by

It seems that the trait system is complicated enough for the min-max crowd to sweat over it for a long time. Meanwhile, here’s a handy guide for the rest of us.

The big 5: Each profession have 5 trait lines, which can be roughly described as pressure, criticals, defense, healing/support, and profession-specific. Each boosts 2 attributes that are most closely linked to how that given profession fulfills this role. For example, for all professions the pressure trait line increases power and condition duration, except for guardian which increases power and boon duration. However, as guardians rely on boons more for damage, this is understandable. Likewise, the elementalists’s four first trait lines are fire (pressure), air (criticals), earth (defense) and water (healing/support), with the fifth tied to arcane and attunement swapping. So if you remember pressure, criticals, defense, healing/support, and profession-specific, it should be easy to see where you need to invest your attribute points.

Musings of an Arm-Chair Mesmer – Part I: Weapon Themes

Previously, I wrote up an initial synthesis of what was known about the mesmer profession then. With the closed beta weekend, a lot of new information has emerged giving the community a much deeper inside look into the workings of the illusionist. Another round of synthesis is necessary.

Now before we start, I just wanted to say that this article is not meant to be an all authoritative source of truth. It is merely an article written out of passion for the profession, meant to start a discussion among the many arm-chair mesmers (for this is all we can be at this time) out there in the community. With that in mind, let us dig deep into the details and just focus on the different land-based weapon sets!

As with other professions, each weapon wielded by the mesmer contains a certain theme. Recognizing these themes can help putting together a build that will ultimately match a player’s preferred play-style.

Head to Head: Thief vs Ranger

Posted 10/02/12 by

When the thief was announced, people originally thought it was a very similar profession to the ranger. Their combat styles do show similarities, but do not be mistaken, these are very different professions. In my opinion, the ranger is more similar to the necromancer, and the thief is more similar to the mesmer. Nevertheless, many of you are probably deciding between the two, and I hope the current column can help make your choice clearer.

On the forums, there is a long thread asking and discussing how the Mesmer class will have transformed with 250 years between GW1 and GW2. While waiting for any official news on Anet’s side, Tap-Repeatedly is taking the 8th by predicting and speculating how the Mesmer class will be like in GW2. Keep in mind these are not official news, but the article still makes for an interesting read that reflects the enourmous anticipation for this last profession!

How close do you think Lewis is to the real thing? Do you agree with him?

Arenanet | Profession Release: Engineer Class

Engineer Class

Engineer Class

It’s Thursday and the long-awaited profession release has come.

So it’s the Engineer, not the mesmer. Sad panda. In any event:

The latest profession revealed for Guild Wars 2 is the engineer, a brand new profession. The engineer doesn’t have a large selection of weapons, but they make up for this in the diversity of their skills. For example, the engineer has a selection of Weapon Kits that gives the engineer access to new weapons.

Among their other skill types, the engineer can use different Backpack Kits (such as a mine or med kit) and Turrets (like a net or healing turret). Furthermore, the engineer has a special set of skills called the Tool Belt, which adds to the effectiveness of their other skills (such as a detonation option for mines).

As usual, the profession release comes with detailed descriptions of what makes the engineer unique, and comes with a selection of skill videos.

Thanks to Guildoholic and RDarken for spotting this first on our site and to RDarken for formulating the announcement and sending it too me while I was still half asleep (which is much better than what I originally had)!
