Guild Wars 2 Gets Iran Ban

Posted 23/08/12 by

If you are in Iran and want to play Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2, it looks like you are out of luck. The Iranian government has clamped down on numerous games blocking players from connecting to the services, including Guild Wars.

In a brochure released by the Iranian government, games such as Assassin’s Creed, Red Light Center, Call of Duty 4, World of Warcraft, Runescape, Second Life, Dofus, GuildWars, Evony and Entropia Universe have now been blocked as indicated by the brochure released by the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance following a conference on the 14th. The reason for the blocking is:

  1. Promotion of superstition and mythology
  2. Promotion of violence due to too much violence.
  3. Abolishing the deformation in sin.
  4. Demonstration of inappropriate clothing and slutty outfits for female avatars.
Interestingly enough, at Gamescom last week, Iranians were busy promoting their developers and games at an Iranian booth. They are obviously keen to foster game development, but obviously with some very tight controls.

If anyone is in Iran and has been caught up in the banning, do let us know.

Thanks IncGamers and the Verge.

What Makes a Good Tyrian Name?

Posted 24/05/12 by

GuildWars 2 NamesAn article on the naming conventions used in the Guild Wars universe by Annie VanderMeer Mitsoda looks into what makes a good name in Guild Wars 2 and explains the life cycle of the creation of the name.

As Guild Wars 2 has moved into using a lot more voice-over work than the original games, the importance of this pass has grown tremendously, and the rule of thumb is to say any name or phrase out loud a few times before committing to it. “Xanthoaediax” may seem like a lovely name, but it’s going to be a nightmare to pronounce!

Asura Week Day 4

Posted 15/09/11 by

On the fourth day of Asura Week, ArenaNet first updated the Asura page on the official Guild Wars 2 website. There is new lore, new wallpapers and screen shots, as well as a stunning video from the asura home city, Rata Sum (bonus points for those who know what the letters in that name can be rearranged as). The video shows a technologically advanced city, far from the brutish tech employed by the Charr. The asuran technology is sleek and clean, but no less dangerous. We also get a first look at what looks like asuran computer screens.

The diminutive asura are the smartest people in Tyria. Just ask them; they will tell you. Once, they were the undisputed masters of a powerful underground civilization, but were driven to the surface by the Great Destroyer, the herald of the Elder Dragon Primordus.

Then Lead Animator Heron Prior talked animation in a blog post with video examples of unique asura animations.

Some players will undoubtedly scowl and grumble that the asura have been reduced to comic relief and the race has been ruined. Instead, we feel we’ve brought to the forefront something that was always at the core of their collective personality. These are the smack-talking creators of the “Genius-Operated Living Enchanted Manifestations” after all. So, set aside your preconceptions and take an asura for a spin. We think you’ll come to love the little guys as much as we do.
