BWE2 – What I Did This Weekend – Gorani

Posted 10/06/12 by

First of all, I decided to create a Thief to find another back-up profession to my main. I chose a Norn and went out to explore the “starter world”. I had done the “heart quests” before, so nothing really new caught my attention in the Foothills. My personal story wrapped around Eir and a weapon smith that needed Deldrimor steel to forge a heroic weapon. I liked the concept of “Initiative” for the Thief profession. It took a while to find the weapon combinations that worked best for me. I settled for a melee set with a sword and off hand dagger and the short bow. The first set allowed me to slash & shadow step a lot, making the Jotun I had to fight dizzy, the ranged weapon to kite and cripple anything that would reach me.

The steal mechanic is not that great, IMO. At range, I used it to steal from the foe with a shadow step, fire off the stolen ability (not really caring what is was – some effect that would help me I assumed) and slicing my foe with the sword after that point. Compared to a Guardian’s Virtues or the Attunement swapping of the Elementalist, stealing was less exciting and useful. Perhaps you need more practice to appreciate it.

Talking about the Guardian and the Elementalist that survived from last BWE: The Guardian checked some hearts in the Charr lands, fighting ghosts, serving beverages to thirsty soldiers and getting her Blood Legion war band to stop infiltrators with cow bombs (yes, you have read correctly). I spend a lot of time burning every copper ore I could find on armor crafting and jewellery (Rhonwyn got some nice things made out of pearls on Sunday afternoon). The Elementalist explored all Points of Interest in Lion’s Arch, and checked all new changes for you (see updates in the Elementalist Forum). Finally I fought some battles in WvWvW with her and did OK, earning a Badge of Honor.

Where Will All Your Money Go?

Posted 29/04/12 by

For everybody that played during the beta weekend, it is obvious where all the money from players is supposed to go: To some Arena.Net vault managed by Asura and guarded by little golems.

Unlike the first Guild Wars, where you don’t have to spend a lot of money just to play, Guild Wars 2 will be a game where you will have to spend a lot more “in-game currency”.
Money drops from foes are far less frequent in GW2, so you have to salvage & gather/harvest a lot if items for your every day life on Tyria. Of course, you might argue, doing your personal story quests, dynamic events lines and “heart-quests” rewards you with coin, too. But there are a lot of things that a pure money sinks: First the gathering & crafting. The pick, sickle & axe are the first tools you have to buy to be able to get a single ore, onion or log. Then there are all the way points, which charge just a small fee, but that adds up with other stuff, like damaged armor (especially in WvWvW, where your income is pretty bad), unlocking the use of traits for 10 silver, re-setting trait points, changing crafting professions …

The thing that bugged me the most and I am honest with that, is the limited access to the in-game bank account, which can only be done when you are in one of the big cities, like Lion’s Arch. Accessing the bank from anywhere else, requires the use of an Asura Bank portal, which costs 35 gems from the “commerce tab”. Yes, I can send basic materials, like jute or ore through a “free service” towards my storage tab in the bank, but I had hoped that at least some bank access would be scattered on the maps as well.

With all those commercial additions around gems, including the server swap for 1.800 gems, Arena.Net has left the “buy once, play free”-road and set its feet on the muddy path of “pay to play”. Not everybody will be happy about that choice.

WvW as Level 1? Checking Arena.net’s Claim

Posted 28/04/12 by

This morning, after not being able to log on last evening, I wanted to check out WvWvW, which was not very populated during the March press beta, we at GWO could attend.

How much would the lag I experienced every time when meeting more than 10 people affect WvWvW?

A lot. I had the impression, that once you got into a major fight, e.g. at a gate of a tower, the team with less lag would win the Zerg rush. I lagged so much (being on the EU Vabbi Server), that when I saw (well felt) the tide turning, I dodge rolled back two times and hoped I would not be downed by then. Skilled game play, like knocking down foes that prepare a big attack was not possible. I basically started to hit buttons.

Can you really start out as a Level 1 character?

As you can see on the screen shot, I tried, but having so few skills available – and in my case not all attunements unlocked – is a great hindrance to defeat your foes that have utility skills and better items. It would not have mattered if you could react without lag, but as I have written in the last paragraph: Push 1-2-3 has happened a lot.
It was also incredibly difficult to pick up loot from other players (the auto-loot from the last beta is gone on default, but you can enable it in the options. I discovered that too late) and I hardly got any coin for defeating foes – but had to pay for armor repair a lot more.

Will I return to WvWvW?

Sure, yes, but right now it is not the best experience to start with.

Press Beta Weekend Q&A Roundup

Posted 27/04/12 by

After the last Press Beta Weekend back in March we here at GWOnline let all of our members ask questions about the game. And they asked!

We have collected the questions and answers here in this post, so you have something to read while waiting those last few hours before the Beta Weekend Event starts. We find out that Lady Rhonwyn got turned into a table, that Alaris could not use jump shot to climb  and that CMEPTb found dynamic events surprisingly addicting. And that is just a tiny little bit, so make sure to follow after the jump for the whole run-down! Also, remember that you can share all of your Beta Weekend Event experiences on our community forums (don’t forget the Fanart subforum!), in your personal GWOnline Blog and on GWOnline TV, where you can also find all the GWOnline videos referenced below.

Qanar: How does the underwater movement work? Is there plenty of water to swim around or does it feel really defined?

Lady Rhonwyn: One word: awesome! And think 3D! You look in front of you and to the sides, but then: boom, a fish coming up from below! (and I presume you mean confined, rather than defined). There are huge, deep lakes and there are small, shallow lakes. And there are grottoes that only have an underwater access. But overall, the underwater areas feel very natural, and not something like: oh we want to add swimming to the game, let’s put some lakes down. And the breathing mask you have by default, is a stroke of brilliance. This means you can actually do complete events under water (yes, I’ve seen at least one event that took place purely under water!)

Alaris: There is not a lot of water in the starting area, probably they want people to learn to play a bit before throwing them with the sharks. Movement is easy and intuitive. If you swam in games before, this will be easy for you.

Gorani: Seconded: awesome! Watch my Elementalist underwater video.

CMEPTb: This is something that actually bugged me at PAX West 2011. I feel they have really smoothed it out since and while it takes a little getting use to at first, it is quickly sorted out especially when one starts using their skills. I am looking forward to some PvP underwater combat.

Teina: Water movement works pretty much like other 3D movements in other games with flights and swimming. It was very intuitive if you’ve played any other games with flights and swimming. The bodies of water I’ve came across have been small (swamps, small lakes).

The Aesthetics and Creative Side of GW2 – Part 3: Customization

Posted 25/04/12 by

continued from Part 2: Audio

It’s expected that the developer team of a game is creative. They come up with ideas to make the game more enjoyable and attractive for the gamers. But what about you, the gamer?

I, being an artist and crafter, enjoy being creative even while I’m playing a game. It’s nice to be able to outfit my characters the way I like and stand out from the crowd in my own special way. It’s also enjoyable to solve puzzles or hunt for the Easter eggs that the developers leave in the game for the players to find and enjoy. I therefore want to shine a spotlight to these features in Guild Wars 2 that I enjoy.

Beta Forums Slowly Shaping

Posted 21/04/12 by

People already having registered their pre-purchase of Guild Wars 2, might have tried to access the official forums. Today, those look a little less “work in progress” than the last few days, although actual forum links are not working yet. You can access the “Account section” (although I did not dare to try to change my password) and the “Mail section” which showed me I am allowed to send one PM (which was kind of strange). All the other links you can see on the picture below are linking to sites we already know, like the blog, the wiki and the www.guildwars2.com site.
We will have to wait and see, if Arena.Net manages to get the forums up and running by next Friday, when the beta event will start.

The Aesthetics and Creative Side of GW2 – Part 2: Audio

Posted 11/04/12 by

Continued from Part 1: Visuals

The visuals are important in giving impressions of the game, but the audio are as important. Besides keeping the audience entertained, music is responsible for setting the atmosphere of the area. A battle is not as exciting if a relaxing music is played, and a fireball making a nice water-splashing sound will leave you scratching your head. This has been no different in Guild Wars 1; the epilogues for each campaign and expansion show a sense of accomplishment because the theme from each game is played during the epilogues, and you know immediately that you are being attacked by a mesmer if you hear the tingling sound that Conjure Phantasm makes.

Guild Wars 2 is fully equipped with a large list of music and sound effects. Though it is best that you hear them all yourself, neither of us have the time to discuss every sound effect in the game or savor every ambient music. I am therefore picking out the audio components in the game that I feel are the most important.

The “Tyrian Theme”

The login screen of Guild Wars 2 features the recurring music theme dating back to the original Prophecies login. Because this theme has been used when the focus is on the Tyrian continent, I like to refer to it as the Tyrian Theme.

The theme has been used in many of the symbolic pieces in the Guild Wars soundtrack. In Prophecies, it makes its first appearance in the Prophecies login screen as the Guild Wars Theme, and is featured in several other pieces including Gwen’s Theme normally heard in the Presearing Ascalon. The theme stays dormant during the Factions and Nightfall login screens, and makes a comeback in the Eye of the North login screen as the Overture from Eye of the North.

The Aesthetics and Creative Side of GW2 – Part 1: Visuals

Posted 04/04/12 by

The other weekend, I had the honor of joining GWO’s Guild Wars 2 press beta team. This was actually my very first time playing Guild Wars 2, and so far I liked what I witnessed in the game. The improvements and changes such as the new skill system, underwater combat, and PvP format are attractive, but as one artist I cannot help but focus on the in-game aesthetic aspects of Guild Wars 2.

In inspecting the artistic parts of Guild Wars 2, I have been remembering about a video clip from some time ago that the overall theme of the game that the designers were aiming for was a painting-like feel, instead of the realistic feel that most other 3D games opt for. With many great artists on board in the Guild Wars 2 development team and witnessing the execution of this plan in person, I have to say that the plan is a great success. As with any other game, Guild Wars 2 has a lot of artistic components to them, so I am going to go through a few of them and inspect one item at a time.

Top 10 Meta-Reasons Guild Wars 2 is a 10

Posted 30/03/12 by

Dreams of a Sylvari Mesmer

Dreams of a Sylvari Mesmer

A lot of the same reasons come up when you see people’s top 10: no subscription fee, low grind, high replay value, AAA, dynamic events, WvW, visceral combat… however, Guild Wars 2 isn’t a grocery list of gimmicks, rather, those features are the tip of the iceberg that is ArenaNet’s design philosophy. That philosophy permeates the whole construction of Guild Wars 2, from the broad strokes (pun intended) to the little details.

Here, I review what I think are the top 10 meta-reasons why Guild Wars 2 is interesting, and give some representative examples of how each meta-reason permeates itself into a wide range of design decisions. It is not an exhaustive list, because I hope to finish writing this article before Guild Wars 2 is released.

Guild Wars 2 isn’t a collection of gimmicks… but rather a powerful vision that will change the very course of MMORPGs for years to come.

Crafting, Pets and a Jackalope

Posted 30/03/12 by

My next pet!
The last time I played Guild Wars 2 was 2 years ago, in Köln during the GamesCom. That was an hour only, standing, in a very crowded and noisy area.
This time, I was sitting behind my own (elderly) PC, with only my cats to bother me (told my husband I wouldn’t be available for the entire weekend). I also didn’t really follow any news about Guild Wars 2, about skills, weapons, armour, and such. Only basic gameplay. So, I’m writing this as a person who has a lot of Guild Wars 1 experience and hardly any knowledge of Guild Wars 2.

Guild Wars 2 Beta Footage

Posted 29/03/12 by

Over the last couple of days we at GWOnline have pushed out a lot of gameplay footage from last week-end’s Guild Wars 2 Press Beta event. Too much footage in fact to post everything here. And we are still not done! Here is but a taste:

The Guardian: First Impression

Posted 29/03/12 by

I had a chance to play the guardian during the recent Guild Wars 2 beta event. It was my first taste of Guild Wars 2, so not only I had to learn about the profession, but also the game itself.
I played the guardian up to level 15 in PvE and WvW, so my impressions are of the early game. I also unlocked all of the weapons and off-hand skills (except aquatic skills) so I could try them out.

Some of you who’ve played with me in Guild Wars probably wonder why I chose to play a guardian, since I usually prefer a caster or some other ranged profession. I admit initially I was sceptical about the guardian, but after playing it for a while, I enjoyed it enough to include it on my list of characters to create with my first five character slots.
