US Sanctions Against Iran Blocks Games – Same for Guild Wars?

Posted 25/08/12 by

We have asked ArenaNet to comment on the news that Guild Wars, and we assume Guild Wars 2, was banned in Iran. While ArenaNet had not sent us a response, Blizzard has posted a note on their WoW forums explaining their situation with World of Warcraft in Iran.

According to the post by Blizzard, the blocking is due to US sanctions against Iran, so we can assume ArenaNet has a similar policy to follow. The statement from Blizzard reads:

Our team has been watching this thread closely, and we understand the desire for more information about this situation. Blizzard Entertainment cannot speak to any reports surrounding the Iranian government restricting games from its citizens.

What we can tell you is that United States trade restrictions and economic sanction laws prohibit Blizzard from doing business with residents of certain nations, including Iran. Several of you have seen and cited the text in the Terms of Use which relates to these government-imposed sanctions. This week, Blizzard tightened up its procedures to ensure compliance with these laws, and players connecting from the affected nations are restricted from access to Blizzard games and services.

This also prevents us from providing any refunds, credits, transfers, or other service options to accounts in these countries. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes and will happily lift these restrictions as soon as US law allows.

We still await clarification from ArenaNet.

Guild Wars 2 Gets Iran Ban

Posted 23/08/12 by

If you are in Iran and want to play Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2, it looks like you are out of luck. The Iranian government has clamped down on numerous games blocking players from connecting to the services, including Guild Wars.

In a brochure released by the Iranian government, games such as Assassin’s Creed, Red Light Center, Call of Duty 4, World of Warcraft, Runescape, Second Life, Dofus, GuildWars, Evony and Entropia Universe have now been blocked as indicated by the brochure released by the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance following a conference on the 14th. The reason for the blocking is:

  1. Promotion of superstition and mythology
  2. Promotion of violence due to too much violence.
  3. Abolishing the deformation in sin.
  4. Demonstration of inappropriate clothing and slutty outfits for female avatars.
Interestingly enough, at Gamescom last week, Iranians were busy promoting their developers and games at an Iranian booth. They are obviously keen to foster game development, but obviously with some very tight controls.

If anyone is in Iran and has been caught up in the banning, do let us know.

Thanks IncGamers and the Verge.
