Mike O’Brien on Microtransactions

Posted 28/03/12 by

With so much coverage going on here at GWO following the Beta weekend, this almost slipped through the net. Mike O’Brien has been talking to PCGamers about the microtransacton model in Guild Wars 2 following last week’s announcement. The article/interview can be checked out on PCGamer. Here’s a quick snip:

“You know it’s not going to last”, O’Brien continues. “You see a lot of success in MMOs that don’t have monthly fees, however they monetise. Free-to-play or premium microtransactions, whatever. Now everybody’s catching onto it, and there’s going to be a lot more diversity in MMO business models. And as a gamer I’ve got to say – thank god.”

Clarification on Microtransaction Questions

Posted 22/03/12 by

Most of you will have got your head around the economic system for GW2 by now after yesterday’s post by Mike O’Brien, but just in case, Rubi just posted this on Facebook…

Here are a few important clarifications about our microtransaction system. First, that gold is coming from other players. So somebody must have an abundance of gold if he trades it to a player. The system is not adding new gold from the outside.

Second, take into account the gem/gold trading system. Everything that is in the store will basically be available for gold with this system – so it doesn’t really matter what is in the store, as it is also available for players who play and don’t want to spend additional money. Hope that helps!

There is a massive on-going thread on yesterday’s reveal in the forums and you can join in the discussion now.
