View Full Version : Current Guild Wars Build

Figured since I keep checking gw.exe for the latest build, I should share my findings.

Currently at 7.400. This is interesting as midday yesterday, they were at 7.399. Usually we see numerous new builds every day, so for them to stop at 7.399 is interesting. Then again, I suppose the development team has to sleep at some point.

There is a new blurb at the login page.

"Welcome to Guild Wars! Plesae see www.guildwars.com for information about our upcoming Beta Weekend Events, the next of which begins on December 4th."

And to those in chat, no, I still can't get in.

I also like that we can monitor how much work is being done every day (somewhat). Something very nice about knowing that ArenaNet's people are actively working for our hard-earned money.

Wonder if they've implemented the trade chat section yet.

Well, I do notice they added 4 new languages. Italian, french, german and spanish. But the December 4th Beta weekend notice is english for all 4 new languages.

Heh, was Swedish Chef there previously? I must have missed it.

"Velcume-a tu Gooeeld Vaers! Pleaese-a see-a vvv.gooeeldvars.cum fur inffurmaeshun aebuoot oooor upcumeeng Beta Veekend Ifents, zee next ooff vheech begeens oon December 4t."

"Inter yuoor aecuoount imaeeel aeddress und paessvurd tu lug oon tu Gooeeld Vaers."

The actually "translated" everything on the main screen to Swedish Chef. Seeing as the blurb is new as of 7.402, this must also be new. Game programmers with a sense of humor (and muppet appreciation) are the best.

Only thing I would be worried about is if the updates/improvements drastically slowed down after release because of the "Hah we hve thier money now" mentality.

But heres hoping for the best :D

you have to remember that ArenaNet is going on the "Buy Our Expansion" business mode. If we have to wait for patches (which is something they said we, as gamers, would not have to do), we won't buy their expansion packs.

Most businesses make more money on repeat business.

That makes me sad Tarrant :(

a pretty "big" accomplishment after being woken up by a firealarm at 5:30 am...gotta love the dorms. :uhhuh: but anyway...

Would it really be difficult to add an option that makes any person that says a message really fast be muted? (bnet does this and calls it flooding, where the spammer gets disconnected)

I was never personally bothered by the spam because it is easy to move to a high number district to avoid it. Any low #'s (especially #1, that's basically a trade district) and you're just asking for it. :)

It's entirely plausible but I don't know for certain. Regardless, Jeff Strain is (I believe) American. I assume there must be other American devs as well. Again, we shall see whether the holiday impedes development any.

Arena has the power to just update the game whenever they want via the streaming technology.. The build version numbers don't really provide us with any information, but you can use them to reference bugs that you find during the BWE or for the beta testers.

Other than that widely known fact, is there really a point to this thread?

Bobangry
22-11-2004, 03:00
Saidinhc:
There is a very worthy point of this thread. To let people know otherwise untold menu changes for one (such as the chat filter). Also it lets us know how much the devs are working on the game and can provide an idea how much updating there is to do. There are alot of people keeping up with the updates so they don't have to do it all on the 4th (last time some people I know had to wait up to 45 minutes when I just logged on and played) and they are enjoying keeping the rest of the community up to date! Is it a crucial thread? No. Is it fun? Yeah. :)

I know many of you when you attempt to log in are just wondering if you can get into the game, but for me it is an experience beyond that. Beyond wondering if I won the battle report contest.

I have been listening to the sounds, watching the clouds - etc.

One of my main issues (which I did not complain about) was the errors in the cloud code where every now and then, the fogging would condense into a point, which would float across the screen - a pixel - a flaw - but oh how so annoying to an OpenGL programmer mind. Purple it was - the color purple - deep and annoying.

This is gone...

Now I am listening to the sounds in the background and the distant rumbling of thunder and the whistling of the wind as I have noted my sound would slip from desktop stereo to Dolby 7.1 from time to time. I am not sure if this is GW related exactly.

I know this sounds flaky, but *Honest* - the storm sounds like it is getting closer. Being battered by Hurricanes so much this year gets one attuned to such things. So I am an amateur expert on the matter.

Or I am going nuts.

It is like a hideous howling rising and falling.

So now - when I look, all I check are the annoying lines that run up and down the column on the left as you move forward and back. Forward and back and foward once more - just like the bug in the Beta where I could not turn left nor right until I restarted at 1st level and got perhaps a different file than if you started at 15th level. Forward and back - watching - hoping for a bug fix... Streaming technology save me - no not the hair - don't steal all the hair from people. Oh the armor - all white - like death. Forward and BACK - and then repeat - counting the players - seeing the class balance - noting all the other Ranger fems could turn - jauntily so - and easily - what was I doing wrong. Did I buy this Betaware only to be trapped in an OpenGL hell of some sort or worse yet - punished into DirectX. The glow - I can see the glow - promised in the higher OpenGL coding. So subtle - so beautiful. So beautiful, I cannot leave - wait - wait - I must find the ocean and see a sunset - somehow. Help me.

If this had been an actual breakdown, I would have taken time off - which I have to burn, driven to Washington, FOUND them, and begged. I did not. The point however is that when all you give is the opening screen, everyone at some level is watching it. Given that you have read this far... what have you noticed... look again.

The good news is I use the column pixel rolling to compare performance at different game settings for smoothness and on different computers. It is all I have to show my friends. Most of them go... "That's it?" when can I play the real thing followed by disbelief that the screenshots are REALLY how the game looks. Come now - you must have finally lost it they think.

I have been updating my friend's computers so they can play too. Now I am off to go fix another one as I noticed that the sky - was blotchy and looked like an 8-bit color of a 32 bit presentation while the ground was different. Given that this was an older Win 98 machine, my suspicion is that there is different levels of OpenGL used for each from the coding aspect. Since he has a 64 MB video card, I am going to up him to a modern operating system and drivers and see if the clouds smooth out.

Good morning - have you seen a GW sunset yet? Have you seen a moon? Did I miss it in my Beta haste?

aka Leather N Lace
("Rangers of the Deep" OR "Reign of Dragons" based upon the new ladder that was added/posted last night to the GW site. On that, the sort buttons for up and down were just empty boxes and did not have arrows... did you notice - I did. Did you notice that when this was unavailable, the Photics site was passworded or locked down, but now they are both up? Elite - odd - a pattern develops - probably meaning nothing.)

PS. - I am off to do my good deed for the day and untangle a Microsoft horror. I wish they would consider streaming update too, for the OS and we were all somehow pushed to XP Pro. I know - hardware incompatibilities, 64-bit coming soon - but while I am dreaming - as someone once said...

"Dream big, for little dreams do not have the power to stir the blood of men"

(In case I did not say it before - thanks for making GW. I hope it changes the gaming world. :innocent: )

Yes, it does, and frankly it's not your place to decide what does and doesn't. If you'll kindly refrain from questioning the judgement of admins and moderators, it would be appreciated. If you have an issue, take it up privately.

Oh, and by the way, you have 23 to go, not .23, seeing as how the current build number is "seven thousand six hundred nineteen", not "seven and six hundred nineteen thousandths". That's a comma there, and AN is an American company, comma doesn't mean decimal on this size of the Atlantic. (And even if it was a decimal, you'd have 0.023 to go, not 0.23.)

BTW, has anyone had the game hang on them while checking out the build number or the options? I launched 7,632 and was playing around with the options (I just got a new video card, now "Detect" sets most of my settings on "High" rather than "Low"), and while I was messing around, the game stopped responding. I couldn't click any more options or even "X", but I could Alt-Tab to the WinXP desktop, and from there I was able to close the client gracefully by right-clicking on its taskbar entry and selecting "Close". I immediately relaunched it and saw the build number was 7,633. Now I'm wondering if having the build switched out from under me had something to do with it, or just all my monkeying around with the options.

Scaper-X
01-12-2004, 18:42
But you weren't actively connected to a server while changing the settings. Also, as we saw during the beta weekends, the entire program has to be restarted to download new builds.

My guess is that perhaps you found a combination of settings that your card didn't like? Perhaps another active program causing issues? Strange that it'd hang, never had that happen before.

In the overall scheme of things "smaller" is better I think for speed.

Actually the trend line on the previous graph was inaccurate because of the same values towards the end of the date axis. Now it's accurate. One can see that these values are the same because of the start of the holidays. I'll put up a chart around every week, nothin better to do..
It's be nice also if someone would jot down the build number daily, even if it hasn't changed.

Speaking of which, the graph now looks like this:

http://web.axelero.hu/corynn/gwbuild050105.jpg

In thory, the polinomic line indicates the progression if the devs progress at the current pace, while the logarithmic line indicates the rate of development that needs to be achieved if the devs increase development at the current pace. Hope I got it right :)

Scaper-X
05-01-2005, 10:37

v0.2 - Having obtained permission to use the AN & GW logo I present all who are interested with the next update after JanBwe, best and nicest yet. I switched from logarithmic to linear equotation on the primary trendline, shows more clearly but quite unnoticably different this way. I also got hold of older data which got implemented and modifies trendlines, but is out of bounds for this graph (build was 4,953 on the 10th of May). It's really wicked to see how clearly the graph illustrates the start and end of the holidays, then the boost before and during the event.

Yeah, I think that, sometime after the holidays, they implemented a system where they can do builds internally without pushing the changes out immediately. Makes it impossible to monitor their day to day progress, although I suspect the reason has more to do with making sure things are just the way they want it before the push a new version to the closed beta testers.
