View Full Version : What to play while waiting for GW?
I had a funny discussion with my friend the other day. We we're both still experiencing withdrawals from last GW beta weekend and wishing it was allready Jan 8th so we could get our next fix :D..
Then we talked what should we play on the meantime? Both of us have played DC (DesertCombat) a lot and are really fed up with the game. We don't want to buy WoW, because of it's monthly fee and silly cartoon graphics.
What do you play when you're not playing GW?
(No we're not going to play Minefields or Solitaire ) :xsmile4:
EDIT: Fallen - moved to OTF

thats a good question, cant really find anything that takes my interest atm.
pretty much being playing KoF 2001 - 2003 to pass the time when im bored
I was playing Evil Genius for a while. Haven't gone to the second island yet though. In the mean time I revisited some DOS games. The most recent one I revisited was Prince of Persia. No, not Sands of Time or Warrior Within. Just plain old DOS PoP. :)
Going back and finishing/starting all the XBox games I've never gotten around to finishing/playing. Also thinking about getting into some Quake 2 :xsmile5:

Unreal Tournament 2004 (Team Death Match) I love putting those clans in their place. I've been banned from 7 servers for owning them. (LOL then cries inside.)
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. You cant' beat Square Enix in the console RPG department.
Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3: I recommend this to any fan of the series. It's extremely faced paced, one of the fastest fighting games I’ve played.
I've also got finals this week so I’ve been busy with that also.

Well, I'd have to send my vote for T-O-M-E (http://www.t-o-m-e.net) - an Angband (http://thangorodrim.net) variant. Fun game, and after playing it, you wll never complain about GW mission difficulty again. :vP

I've been hit with withdrawls too, every day GW gets run at least once to check for updates (so I don't have to stream it all at one time lol). In the mean time, I've been hitting the SNES emulator, the occasional NFL game (because they eat alot of time, especially 2K5) or extending my list of Final Fantasy games beat (currently, I am looking at 6-10 + tactics + legend 3). I still gotta finish 1 and 5, and i have 2 and 4 to play next. And, Halo 2 on legendary anyone? I hate the multiplayer but the campaign is definately awesome

muonline is a freebie MMO game and there's a few others, but I'm sure most of those are probably lousy. Who knows, maybe the free MMO's are worth it, but I haven't checked them out personally.
I would recommend Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 while you wait, as the controls are very similar to Guild Wars (although Guild Wars is more fun, the story in KOTOR is awesome) and of course a game from another genre, Half-Life² is a must play if you truly consider yourself a PC gamer. Note the avatar... <_< >_>
Halo 2, GoldenEye: Rouge Agent, Bard's Tale, Demon Stone, Fable all on the X-box.
Been revisiting my Command and Conquer collection lately too. Tried to Reload the old Army Men II game, was gonna play through it. Got a silly cannot load error. Same with a lot of my old games. Dont know what the deal with that is, runnin xp home. Cant wait for the new Red Alert game...even though its just now beginning development. Love the the series.
Course right now thats all taking a backseat to finals.

I've been playing battlefield 1942, but my disc somehow got all scratched and won't let me play :(. Minesweeper :). Street fighter Alpha 3, and other similar arcade fighters. And Anarchy Online has announced free accounts till january 2006, so I'm d/ling that atm. Hopefully that'll pass the time till GW is playable.
Final fantasy (consoles, specifically FF1. Think its easy? Try 4 thieves.)
Vagrant story
Xenogears
Neverwinter nights
Breath of Fire 2
Four white mages? It'll never work [/obscure 8bit theater quote]
I assume you have a PC since you play guild wars (duh! :p) so get Half-Life2. It's awesome!
Super nes games are better though...
Until GW is released I would very much recommend Knight.Online to everyone, you won't find a greater similarity to GW anywhere ;)
.and. it's also free2play.

why does it say you need to buy a "card code"?

Well, I'm currently downloading both Anarchy Online and Knight Online. We'll see if either is worth the time...
EDIT: Note, the registration for a Knight Online account doesn't appear to work under Firefox, at least it didn't for me, some sort of Javascript problem. It kept telling me that my email address (which I had just created a few minutes before on my server) was already in use. Using IE for the registration worked.
In any case, it never said anything about any "card code"...

Okay, I do hereby officially proclaim, Knight Online is lame. That's the quick summary, for details:
Creating a character is so much fun. You can choose between one of three faces and one of three hairstyles. You can type in any name you want, but the game will probably tell you it's not a valid name. Note, it won't tell you WHY it's an invalid name, or what the rules are for constructing valid names, it'll just say you can't use that one, and keep telling you that until you pick a name that satisfies its secret rules. You also get to pick some stats and stuff, with no real explanation as to what they mean.
Camera options are awful. You have your choice between a mode where you can zoom out reasonably far, but the camera won't stay behind you. Or you can choose the mode where the camera does stay behind you, but it refuses to zoom out very far at all. There's also a first person view if you want it, but that's essentially zoomed all the way in, and I want to zoom out, thank you very much.
You character turns around with the speed of a drunken turtle.
The NPCs are extremely hard to interact with. You have to left-click on them, then right-click on them (just right-clicking on them doesn't work), then tell them yes, you really did want to trade. Good luck with a crowd around.
Right outside of town, you'll find the place is infested with worms, that have a tendency to just appear out of nowhere. They're harmless unless you attack them, which you'll want to do, because you start out rather helpless and need some creature as lame as you are to fight. If you're lucky, you'll have some poorly animated spell to hit them with. Eventually you can collect 10 silks and give them to some guy for a quest, but by then you'll have become so bored with the game and frustrated with the poor user interface, lousy control and camera angles that upon receiving your 500 XP and hearing your next quest will net you more XP and a potion you'll be so thrilled you'll fall asleep, if you haven't already...
"Free2Play" indeed. You get what you pay for...
(Now, in approximately 12 hours, BitTorrent will finish fetching Anarchy Online, which will hopefully be much better. I simply can't imagine it being worse...)
I've played Knight Online. Long before I fell in love with Guild Wars. IMHO KO is not worth the time & effort. If you're the kind that loves grinding then maybe KO is for you. The community is awful. Go to their forums (be it Malaysian KO or US KO) and you'll see what I mean. Lots of bugs. Lags like hell. People use bots, cheats, etc. here & there. Of course, people would deny it, but it's very obvious.
Another game that I'd recommend you stay as far away as you can is Risk Your Life (RYL). Lags like hell. Not sure about this, since I'm not a technical guy, but the bad coding causes the game to suffer from constant memory leaks. Pop into a town with more than 20 people & the client will crash. (OK not exactly 20, but more or less) The skill system is kinda like GW, though not close enough i.e. you can buy skills or monster drops them. Both games are not worth my hard disk space IMO.
I tried to play Anarchy Online 2 but it says I have to have a credit card even just for the free 14/15 days trial. Too bad for me. So right now I'm not playing any online games. Just waiting for my beloved GW's BWEs and the release. Thankfully the coming BWEs are going to start on Friday mornings.... /jump /cheer /roar

*sigh* Guild Wars has ruined me. I am so spoiled now...
I just played Anarchy Online for about an hour. It's much better done than Knight Online, but it's still rather klunky in the UI department, and combat isn't nearly so fun, and it seems like there's a lot of grinding doing really silly missions. Get this, your very first mission is to go find four different animals -- note, not kill them, just walk around and say, "Hey, there's a Beech Leet!" Since they're all within a few yards of the guy who gives you the "quest", it's not too hard. Oh, and you can do it as many times as you like, although you only get 50 XP for it (10 each time you spot an animal, and 10 when you talk to the guy). After you run around and spot all the animals, the guy gives you a quest to go kill one of each. And again, they're just running around at random on the beech, not hurting anyone unless you attack them. The combat animations are marginally better than Knight Online, but pretty cruddy compared to GW. I did sort of like the intro, and the background seems interesting, but once I got into the actual gameplay, I just started yawning...
I'm so screwed. There's nothing else I really want to play...
EDIT: Upon further reflection, I think what I really dislike about KO and AO compared to say GW or even D2 is the extremely lame "quests", not just the clunky UI & combat system. GW missions seem important, and even D2 has you rescuing Deckard Cain within the first half hour of the game. Both KO and AO start out with some of the most mindnumbingly pointless "quests", involving absolutely no exploration (what you need to find is literally right there next to the guy giving you the quest, at least in D2 you had to go search for the Den of Evil) and no sense of importance to it (you got 10 silks/6 body parts, ho hum). You're not a hero, you're nobody of consequence doing nothing of real importance. Bleh... Very quickly, in games I like, I feel like I've become part of an important story that's unfolding, a main character in a well-paced plot. There's definately no sense of this in either KO or AO.

I'd be seriously surprised if Anarchy Online was better than Guild Wars. There's a reason why Guild Wars is better, it was released much later and could address the issues that plague the MMORPG's that came before it.
That being said, go play Baldur's Gate 2. Hundreds of hours of play and lots of fun...if you ever have the patience to get to the end.

As far as the wait for GW goes....I haven't the patience or time with the holidays here to jump into something new so I continue to tweek my toon in Everquest (the original) until GW goes live. It's a pain to logon and go through the endless "Looking for a Group" these days since the numbers have deminished so much there, but it seems a better alternative than buying new and paying more fee's for something I don't intend to follow through with....

Wasn't expecting it to be better, or even as good as. I was kinda hoping it would be playable and enjoyable, though. It started out kinda nifty, seemed like it was going somewhere, even reminded me a bit of The Longest Journey as I was talking to the people at the spaceport, but once I grabbed the shuttle it fairly quickly degenerated into lameness...

I've really been looking forward to spending some quality time with my favorite quirky gun/platformer games, Rachet and Clank III and Jak III (childish, I know, I know, but hilariously funny sometimes) These games have been out for a while, but due to my unfortunate tendency to save my beginner's file over the one where I am almost done, I progress through them rather slowly (or rather, very repetitively) ( sarcasm  ) I'm saving up for a laptop of some sort so I can play GW BWEs and the real game 24/7 without hogging the computer all day. :uhhuh:

For the record, Dreamsmith, dont most rpg's start out like that? From observing others, especially in MMORPG's, the first several hours and lvls are spent on the lamest immaginable tasks, and involve the slaying of countless racoons...or rats....or bunnies. At least to hear the complaints of friends, alas, I have never known the joys nor the horrors of a game with a monthly fee.

"Loser"? In what way? Someone who can afford to sit home for three or four months playing computer games sounds more like a winner than a loser to me. It's the poor sods toiling away 8x5 all year around who are losing this game. What kind of a life is that?
Well, the only game that i actually play often at the moment is Return to Castle Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory. I play C&C generals occasionally, but my time's mainly spent browsing this forum, or checking if Arena.net were nice and let me on Guild Wars :)

Diablo II--still. And, I think, for a bit of variety, I'll put Warlords IV back in.
I have'nt played almost since release, but I've always concidered Neverwinter Nights from bioware to be very close to Guild Wars. In fact it's the first thing I thought of the first time I played GW.
The other day I saw NWN Platnium with the original and two expansions for $39 US and was very tempted, even though I have the original here somewhere.
I also thought about digging out my almost unused Wizardry 8.

Anyone ever hear about Serious Sam the Second Encounter.
True it is not a RPG, but a FPS. What is nice about it is the Deathmatch. Very fast action high adrenaline twitch shooter. True it is an older game, but it still has a very dedicated following, and the next release is due out soon.
I have been playing Serious Sam for about 3 years now, and online Fragmatch for two straight years, I have not grown tired of it yet. If you want to see screens and such, just check out the link in my profile and it will take you to where we have some screens posted.
I have played nearly every FPS I can lay my hands on. Doom, Duke Nukem, UT, Quake. IMO - With the exception of Doom3, nothing stacks up to Sam.
Guild Wars is the first game of this type I have really taken serious and played, and I have to confess, unlike other RPG, I really like Guild Wars. I'm hooked. I have managed to get in on two weekends and plan on purchasing the full version.

Lostchylde, C.S. Friedman's Black sun rising, When true night falls, and Crown of Swords is pretty good, but pretty deep as well. S.M. Stirling and David Drake's The General Series is about the best Military Science Fiction you will ever read. John Ringo writes some fun Military science fiction as well. L.E. Modesitt jr in't all that lesser known I guess, but the recluce novels are pretty good regardless. The same for Raymond E. Feist, pretty much everything he's written is good. Dave Duncan has some fabulous fantasy novels, The Gilded Chain being the first in the short series. Glen Cook's Black company books are good, james clemen's Wi'itch novels are good, David Gemmel writes good heroic fantasy, Legend is one of the first books he wrote and a great novel. Terry Brooks is well known for his shannarra series, but Knight of the Word and the other Word novels are modern fantasy, and very good, much more... adult than his early shanarra novels. Angus Wells: Lords of the Sky is still one of the best novels I've ever read. Michael Moorcock's work is good, and even thought provoking. I've got more I could probably suggest, but now you've got me thinking, and I want to read some of those books again now, too =P
Oh, for games... just been cycling through all my old games. Played some homeworld, some mech commander 2, heroes of might and magic 2, lord of magic, tried the free online trial version of Ryzom, didn't like it, too much grind... Tried another free online trial, forget the name now... actually didn't mind the game too much, but the in game community sucked. I was there 2 weeks playing and didn't hardly meet a single person to meet and group up with. Heh, no thanks on that. Played the Dawn of War demo, thought it was pretty cool... that's about it.
If you are looking for an amusing 15 day trial, you might try shadowbane. That's what I used to play before the developers screwed one too many servers up via mis-management. Still, it was the best pvp game I've ever played in (based around a 3rd person view), even better than guildwars, though not by a whole lot. Its pretty time demanding though, Guildwars seems more relaxed. My city isn't going to be destroyed in guildwars if I can't play for a few weeks.

LOL. I still play it. I have been ranked Number 1 in the world 5 or 6 times, don't even keep track now. A lot of this ranking is based on timed played, but still to reach this rank, you get the idea. Give it a try sometime, only $8 at WallMart now days.
We also have our own group of players. About 40 of us, plus we run our own Game And Forums servers. We are only one of many, many groups. For an old game the following is still very strong. I still play about 15 hours a week.
I started playing Guild Wars trying to find a alternate game for Sam until the next release, now I am hooked and even when the next release comes out, I will be playing Guild as well.

There's WAY TOO MUCH "busy-work" - I spend more than half my "play time" doing things that I really DON'T want to do do get to the parts that I really DO want to do. :(
From what I've seen in GW, it has eliminated a lot of that and is a nice clean RPG. :)

hit a random game on an emulator[pick a system],trying to beat all the Final Fantasy games, currently working on FFVIII( never could get past Griever, but i WILL this time); I really oughta get back to Morrowind
finally bought doom3 to entertain me while waiting on GW....worst mistake i ever made. Pretty graphics and all that but i fell asleep after the first 15 minutes of wandering through levels and shooting everything.
*twiddles thumbs*
