I was introduced to GuildWars by my friends who play DarkSpace, so I thought I might return the favour!
First things... DarkSpace is a game with a History. Yes it warrants a capital H. It has even managed to outlast other games of its genre. EnB probably being the most notable and comparable.
So what is this game about?
It's about blowing spaceships up in other spaceships in glorious 3d technicolour!! There are no AI ships. It's pure player vs player action.
The official blurb:-
DarkSpace is a Massively Multiplayer Online Game which has been running since 2001 and combines tactical ship to ship combat with strategy in a team orientated game. Players gain rank and prestige, which expands the ships they can command and the strategic decisions they make.
I still like to think of it as big shooty ships fighting other big shooty ships, and being careful not to crash into them damned planets that seem to loom out of no-where and hit you!
These planets that are the oh-so-important objectives of the game. The faction that controls all the planets wins. But considering the number of planets in the game this rarely if ever happens.
There are three factions you can play. UGTO, ICC and K'luth. UGTO and ICC are the humans, and K'luth are them evil aliens that scarily seem to look like lobsters! Even worse they are psychic. So they are evil psychic lobsters in spaceships with big guns! Ouch!
Officially the game is pay-2-play, but you don't have to pay. You can still play in the big universe as a demo, you just can't access the larger ships. You CAN however still play an important part in the world and change the universe around you. Everything you do ingame will have some effect. If you fancy erradicating the inhabitants of a planet because they have bad breath, you are welcome to, although the enemy do tend to get a little annoyed after you have wiped out a couple of solar systems under this pretence :-P
The really great thing is that despite not being subscribed, you can still gain statistics and badges.
Anyway, enough of my banter, if any of this sounds interesting then pay a visit to http://www.darkspace.net. It may not have the biggest community, and it may not be the newest game. But it's definately fun. Cmon, you know you want to!
I hope to see some of you there!
P.S. It's only a 40mb download!
