View Full Version : ArenaNet + Star Wars License = Dream Come True
I really really really hope that LucasArts takes note of ArenaNet's success with Guild Wars. They took notice of BioWare and they did Knights of the Old Republic, which was, in my opinion, the best single player game ever created.
LucasArts biggest mistake was recruiting Sony/Verant to do a Star Wars MMO.
My point ... if anyone could do an online (subscription fee-free) Star Wars game, it would be ArenaNet!
Thoughts?

ArenaNet said that they will focus on one game at a time, and I hope that game is never a Star-Wars game.

I think Arena Net would do a good job with Star Wars to be honest. They seem to be sticklers for genre and concepts, which is a fantastic for game developers. Word is that Lucas is gonna take the license away from SOE, I've heard he's miffed about all the Jedi and the economic sim that the game turned into. They've already started handling tech support for the game, which I find interesting.

Why do you say that? Not a Star Wars fan or is it because you've never played a great Star Wars game? Let me ask you ... did you play Knight of the Old Republic?

Yeah, SWG was a mess. Hopefully they learned some valuable lessons -- I know they taught the rest of the MMO world that you cannot create a game based purely on dynamic content and expect gamers to stick around (which is what baffles me about The Matrix Online and why they did it even though they witnessed SWG's failure ... getting 6/10 average review scores now too).
I want to dance on SOE's grave ... I hope they crash and burn in the most-brutal, painful way. The bastards continued billing me and my friends for more than 6 months after we cancelled our accounts ... and according to their customer service, "there's no disputing this and absolute no refunds what-so-ever" ... criminals I tell you! This has happened to all SIX people I know that played SWG!!!!

I honestly would rather see the Star Wars titles die off. I played most up through Rogue Squadron and those were good. After that, finances forced me to take a break, but lately, since my friends own a variety of the newer games I've had a chance to play. IMO, all the Star Wars titles released since 2000 stink.

See, I have a different view on this subject matter. I want Star Wars AND The Matrix to just disapear, in any and all forms of them.
I loved Star Wars all my life. Then one fateful evening in May of 1999, I watched it all crumble away. After that movie, I haven't been able to bring myself to watch the original trilogy ever again. Something I never thought possible. These movies I grew up with and idolized, were tainted. I used to have a picture of me standing next to Mark Hamil, The Mark Hamil hanging on my wall. Now I don't even know where it is. All the editions of original trilogy I have are collecting dust in my closet. And they will most likely stay there forever. Episode I wasn't even the worst part. Episode II could just literaly be the worst movie I've ever seen. I don't think it even deserves to have the name Star Wars tagged onto it. If it wasn't bad enough that Lucas pretty much disregarded the original trilogy and their events with Episode I, he started to pretty much Ignore Episode I in the second movie. What happened to the Medi-Chlorians? Lucas is just trying to pretend they never happened. Next thing we know Vader and Obi-Wan are going to get married at the end of Episode III. At this point I'm surprised that Lucas even remembers who Vader is. So basicaly what I'm saying is that because of these horrible travesties of cinema, my entire view on the Star Wars universe is jaded, and I would rather just see the whole franchise just die out and go away. I'm sure there are people on these forums or elsewhere who might defend these movies, and I am letting you know ahead of time that your efforts will be fruitless. The only way Lucas can redeem himself at this point is if Episode III is rated R. I'm talking horrible bloody violence, swearing, and full frontal nudity. And at the end, we get to see Hayden Christensen writhing in agony. Oh how I hate him. He is just about the worst actor I have ever had the displeasure of seeing on film. I'm not trying to change anyone's view on the matter, merely sharing my view. I don't expect to change anyone's opinion. I pretty much just needed to get this off my chest.
As for the Matrix, I also loved the first one. Then the sequels happened. Oh man, now whenever I try to watch the first one again, all I can see is Keanu Reeves butt all up in my face. That and the fact the second two movies were so very poorly written. I could go on about that for hours, but I ranted enough about Star Wars.
In summation, I would rather see these franchises put to rest then see anymore money being made off of them. Specialy since the Wachowski and Lucas are pretty much undeserving of the money at this point. Well, that's my two cents.

^^ In Total Agreement ^^
Star Wars has been turned to horribleness...
I agree with a lot of what you guys are saying but I will say that Knights of the Old Republic is the only RPG true to the original Star Wars movies.

I haven't played KOTOR, and I have no desire to what so ever. I've heard great things about the game. But anytime I've even thought about playing it, visions of Jarjar bounce through my mind and I almost vomit.

I'm just half-way through the extended universe "heir to the empire" book, part of the trilogy that follows the original trilogy.
There's so much new and cool stuff in the books that follows that an MMORPG based on that would really kill all competition :)

i cant take games anymore with the same content over and over again. only to get nerds to buy your game. i want all franchise die and let genius make original games based on their own fantasy. not some clone of star wars/trek, lord of the toilette and so on.

Is this your first time through that trilogy and have you read any of the other EU books, most specifically the New Jedi Order?

i played star wars galaxies for about a year... and it was GREAT, and it was the first MMORPG ive ever played, and first game ive ever had to pay a fee for, and id play it RIGHT now if it werent for that free
but 2 things ruined it
the fee, of course
and ever since the jedi revamp, every other person is a jedi, if not more people, the Holo system was much better because there were a WHOLE LOT LESS people jedi, now everyone is a jedi and its just no fun anymore, jump to lightspeed was a nice change in pace tho, but that stupid fee.. so i dont play it anymore, and i dont plan on playing it, especially when GW comes out

Lego Star Wars is an awesome game. I played through it all in about 5 days. Not terribly hard, but it looks good and is fun. Which a game should be. I suggest if you liked Mario 64 or games kinda like that that you pick it up.
Also, if Anet got a Star Wars license, I'd play it. I really like how they've handled the Guild Wars phenomenon, and besides, they'd only have to change one word to get to Star Wars... hehe

IMHO, Lego Star Wars is the best Non-KOTOR Star Wars game since Jedi Academy 3. Not that it's been that long...but still amazingly goofy and fun.:happy34:
I've heard very good things about Lego Star Wars and the KOTOR series.
As far as SOE is concerned, I'm taking my first foray into thier way of doing things. I recently upped my MxO account because of SOE coming on board. Quite frankly, anything would've been an improvement when I left. There were bugs (that to thier credit are getting fixed), and the camerma angles in Interlock suck. Everything is too close and I can't see enough to know what to do. Then when you scroll out, the game changes it on you so you can get "bullet time". Ughh ><
What bugged me the most was the forums. They're badly moderated. Posts that were as simple as "I disagree" and expressed with civility were deleted, both from me and hard-core fans of the Matrix movies, without explanation. In the meantime fanboy trolls of the Matrix world would bash away at anyone that didn't share thier same views and same exact beliefs.
MxO players keep saying SOE forums are going to be worse, I actually believe they're going to be better for one reason alone: an off-topic section.
Yes, I've become a GW fanboy, but even I don't want to talk about GW all the time. There is stuff just as fun out there. Like drinking.

I heard such great things about KotOR, so I decided to go out and buy it. Bad mistake on my part. Personally, I found it the most boring game I've ever played. I mean, come on, the game does the fighting for you. I had to force myself to play through the first couple levels, and I finally was able to turn it off and be able to say I gave it a chance.
So this isn't off-topic, personally, I wouldn't like to see ANet do a Star Wars game. I agree with Folgerty, they need to let the series die out. It had its time. Now let's make room for something completely different.

You mean Jake "Where is he now?" Lloyd?
I like KOTOR. They did it right making the game take place in a time when there were a bunch of Jedi and Sith running around. Therefore people can actually enjoy being a lightsaber weilding hero versus other lightsaber weilding folks. The problem with the Star Wars canon is that there are barely any lightsaber having bad guys. Which is why Star Wars Galaxies didn't make sense: there aren't supposed to be THAT many Jedis (good or bad).
If there is a plan for another Star Wars MMORPG, please make it during a time that it makes sense for so many Jedis and Sith. Lots of people just like the idea of having a lightsaber and all those cool powers.
I will always buy a Star Wars game. Nerd to the end.

If Anet made a Star Wars game, I'd probably buy it. Unless there was a fee. Then I'd make a friend buy it and pay the fee so I could play it.
I bought and played KOTOR. I thought it was a good game. Well most of it was. After a while the enthusiasim I had to play through all of the game died out about half way through. After that it just seemed either I couldn't figure out what to do(enter the online guide) or it was just to hard to beat.

Hard to beat? No offence, but KOTOR have got to be one of the easiest RPG ever made. Most people could problely beat it on the first try, maybe even on hard, and I can't think of any puzzles or places that is so hard that it can make you lose your enthusiasim eitheir (unlike the desert missions in Guildwars, which had actually made some people quit the game. And people still complain that Guildwars is too easy!). Infact, it had been critizise by some people for being too easy. I myself don't mind the easy difficulty though, as I find that it doesn't get in the way of your enjoyment of the storyline. I myself never stop playing, not even touching other games, until I finished it.
As for the original topic, I would rather Anet stick to their own creation. They have done a good job on creating their world so far (not including the story though, it is not really outstanding). Even Bioware (the creator of KOTOR) are now doing a new game, Dragon Age, with their own world.
