i've not played GW at all - the purpose of this thread is to help me decide whether or not to start.

i prefer to solo about 95% of the time -- how difficult is it to make your way through the world of GW on your own? i've heard you can hire AI henchmen, but i've also heard that they're kind of crappy...

is partying an absolute necessity?

I'd say not, soloing is perfectly doable. The henchman are fine providing you understand the AI and just how they work.

I am not so sure about this. There are times that you have to have help and althought the henchmen are adequate they seem to me to be quite a low level.

As long as you can pick off single targets and not get jumped by mobs you should be ok.

Most of the quests or exploring the area, you could do by yourself and the henchmen but some require the cooperation with your teamates, e.g. activate a switch to go through a gate.

I tend to solo a lot too. There are a couple of places where you need another team mate. I have not had any problems going it alone everywhere else. There are henchman you can hire to go with you. There are not that strong but they get the job done if used right. There are some areas that are extremely challenging solo. A good trick is to run like hell and lure 1 or 2 away from the others, take them out, and repeat. This is a way to get through those bigger groups. Also it helps to have attacks that affect multiple targets, like area attacks.

Another nice 'trick' when soloing with henchies is to 'pull' opposing enemy groups toward one another, then leave them to battle it out, finally taking-out the survivor yourself, before picking up all the 'drops' and gold. ;)
