View Full Version : [Merged] Beating your mirror

I see a lot of people saying it is impossible to beat your mirror, and it is far from the truth. I beat my mirror on the third attempt. The way it is implemented it quite genious actually, and the way to beat them is to look for an exploit of sorts in the way it is made. What I mean is it will have the same exact spells equiped you do, so if you can find spells that give the upper hand to you and not them it's surprisingly simple to beat them. Here are some tips I came up with to help people out, and these apply to anybody who's an elementalist (primary or secondary). NOTE: These aren't intended to be a "spoiler" but could be seen that way...if you don't want me to "spoil" it read no further!"

KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid! The more firepower you load yourself up with the more power your mirror image has too! And he doesn't have to click buttons or think of a strategy...he instantly does it.
Movement - This is a big one. He is perma-rooted (doesn't move)...you aren't...if you go the route of AoE move out of the way constantly and be weary of getting within melee range for his PBAoE skills.
Enchantments - He has access to the same enchantments you'll have. I thought of going with Life Siphon agaisnt him (since I'm part necro) and got my arse handed to me quicker than any of the other times.
Short Term - Burn him down quick. My battle didn't even take 20 seconds I don't think. If you have a big enough energy pool, don't worry about attunement spells. And since we're going with the KISS concept don't bother with those big energy hog nukes!
Lame Spells - Once you figure out what you the few skills want to use are, fill your bar up with lame skills. These are things he may consider using, whether they are crap nukes or de-enchantments, but you won't touch. I'd suggest staying away from something with an interruption effect.
Quickly now - Rapid succession of casting your skills is essential. Go through your strategy in your head a few times...know which skills to cast, when to move, and try to anticipate what they're going to do next.
Put the wand down - as a way of dealing damage. Think of a quicker solution to getting skills off.
Redistribute - Don't be afraid to redistribute your attribute points to match the skills you intend to use...you automatically will level up to 20 so you can put everything back to normal.
Think - outside the box! Don't be afraid to dust off old skills or skills you no longer use anymore.
Pre-Searing - Finally, I'll give this last rather huge tip. Think back to the pre-searing/early ascalon days in your spells! You need two spells to defeat the mirror, and neither is obtained past Ascalon!

I hope this helps some people out. As I said, you only need two skills to beat him. One deals directly with my second point and the other with my final point. If you still absolutely need help after doing all I've suggested, whisper me "Jadn Of The Shadows" and I'll tell you the secret. Good luck!

Sounds like you used flare and the 15 AoE from pre-seering.

*spoiler*

I didn't change anything. Kept all my usual armor, wand, skills etc. Second it started we both cast meteor shower and I moved out of where hers was falling. She didn't. She stayed knocked down the rest of the fight so she couldnt do anything. Over in about 10 seconds. I'm guessing I got a little lucky, but this worked for me.

Basically to beat your mirror you either need to use several AOE spells, or come up with a good spam combo (I used a couple spam spells with renewal+aura of restoration+several enchantments and he went down fast)

I solved it fairly easily, get rid of all spells except Blinding Flash. He won't use it on you so just make sure you keep him blinded and use your wand on him. Takes a while but he won't even touch you.

I was totally unaware that i would be fighting it, so had my usual skills on..
- conjure flame
- aura of restoration
- flare
- inciduary bonds
- fire storm

and my 2 pet skills..to be ignored here

if you put on conjure and aura and then hit the fire storm.....(be sure to get out of themirrors fire storm) its over in 10 seconds....

that was my first go

it was quite easy for me, on the third try (had to figure the best spell configuration)

i was E/Me 19 (air, domination)

i used the same method as raved

people who said this is hard must not of been fighting the same as me.. I have a E/Mo Fire Elemntist. I didnt change anything on my Elemntist. I went in there and first thing the Opposing Firing SKeleton did was meteor shower I moved and hit with flare.. I used flare and healing breeze and beat it in no time.. all the computer did was shot me with arrows, try and do firestorm and meteor shower. Hard? Its harder for me to make a sandwich then to beat this guy

Was pretty easy for me. took 2 tries (first one failed because he got maelstrom off first)

I'm a fire/ice elementalist all I did was stand in one place and hit him with Maelstrom (sucks to be a caster that can't cast for 10 seconds) then meteor/fire storm and it was over. nice quick and easy and I didn't need to change anything

I finished my mirror the second time, just lose all of your healing skills, and cast flare over and over again, and boom dead in 20 seconds

for all you E/Me (inspiration) out there, there's a simple method you can use to your advantage: the fact that you can precast your enchantments even before facing your miror.

regardless of what kind of ele you are, inspiration has a couple of skills that severely reduce ele dmg..most noteably "elemental resistence" +40 AL vs. ele and -XX AL vs. phys (but who cares, since your miror will be dealing ele dmg to you).

the other notable inspiration skill is "matra of ....(earth, flame, frost, lighning)" depending on which ele you want to reduce dmg from.

use those to your advantage.

Amazing. With only Flare, I never got him below 50% hit points. Did you use attunements? When I got him to 50% i was usually at 0 mana, and then it went down the drain.

Meteor Swarm did the trick for me. I guess Maelstrom is perfect too.

what i did was 2 give my mirror 1 meteor and then flare the rest of the time :D

(take no heals with you) back fire if you are a e/me, if you're a monk, bring no heals.. you'll just have to figure out and manage to out last her with your hp bar..

here's how I did it..

bring meteor storm, flare, firestorm, backfire if you're a mesmer, bane signet if you're a monk, not sure about the other secondarys, fill up other slots with crap, you wont use them but your mirror will..

for E/Me, situation seems to go something like this.. reset your skills a bit if you have to, it's only temporary and refund points are easy to get back : P

now once you get in >> tab >> back fire, with luck, she'll be using a few useless buffs right now that'll drop her hp to almost half >> firestorm >> move cus your mirror will firestorm now >> get in close so your mirror wont shoot arrows at you and go melee instead, it does slightly less dmg >> use meteor storm >> move if she mirrors meteor storm >> smack her silly with your wand till she dies, careful with using flare but can throw in a couple to insure victory if you have a good amount of hp left... keep trying intil you suceed, sometimes she'll get a lucky hit in and stop your plan.

for e/mo, pretty much same as above without backfire but can throw in bane, knock her down using bane as she's trying to get midevil on your behind, then smack her silly with flares..

Here's how I beat my mirror with monk skills.

I first tried a few tricky little sets of skills that all failed.

One set used Scourge Healing and Vigorous Spirit. I hoped that my mirror would attack with Vigorous Spirit for the minor heal and then get punished for it by Scourge Healing. I planned to let the mirror attack away and kill himself. It didn't work.

I tried a few setups with Scourge Healing which all failed.

My mirror did more damage than me so I tried using Protective Bond to limit damage to 5% maximum health. We both ended up doing the exact damage. Now what? The trouble was, Protective Bond gobbles up a lot of energy. If you try to do anything else you run out of energy and Protective Bond ends.

I tried a few different ways to heal myself indirectly, hoping my mirror wouldn't use the same technique. One method used Watchful Spirit for a big heal by ending the enchantment early and then recasting it. No advantage gained. Failed again.

Another attempt at healing-on-the-sly used some cheap, useless enchants like Mend Ailment. The theory was the mirror would never need to use this skill if it never suffered from an ailment. I would use it purely for the heal from my Divine Favor. That didn't really work either. The AI cottened on.

I did eventually find a way to heal myself without my mirror copying. The key was a combination of Guardian and Contemplation of Purity. I'd cast Guardian for a minor heal from Divine Favor, and then I'd use Contemplation of Purity which heals you for each enchantment it cancels. It seemed that my mirror never considered this strategy: enchant yourself and then convert those enchants to healing.

So, I finally succeeded with that and a gung-ho strategy. I loaded up with all my damage dealing skills (despite smiting being my lowest attribute): Bane Signet, Banish, and Smite.

I also took Zealot's Fire and Balthazar's Aura even though I never intended to use them. I wasn't going to enter melee range. The hope was the mirror would waste time and energy on those skills.

I took Blessed Aura too but I can't remember why. I recall that I never actually used it.

In battle, I hit my mirror hard from range with my staff while spamming smiting spells, healing myself with the Contemplation of Purity trick a few times. I beat him in short order with half my health left. I'm sure this isn't the greatest way to beat a monk mirror, but it worked for me.

So, my winning strategy for a monk was:

Attack from range with staff.
Spam Bane Signet, Banish, and Smite.
Heal by enchanting myself with Guardian and then converting that enchantment into a heal with Contemplation of Purity.
Equip Zealot's Fire, Balthazar's Aura, and Blessed Aura, but don't use them.

I beat my feisty mirror with Flare, Blind Flash and Endure Pain. Thats all. Got the jump on the mirror. Wham wham wham, done.

For fun the first time I used Gale and it was hilarious!

best advice against primary ele mirrors take maelstrom, Meteorshower and Firestorm. Cast maelstrom first, then meteor shower then firestorm. It's almost a guaranteed kill.

If you're ele secondary, take Blinding Flash and Meteor shower, with flare to pick him off.

I took only Armor of Frost and Meteor Shower the first time I tried my mirror.

Mirror started with armor, I started with shower, mirror was dead in about 10 seconds.

You could probably do it w/o armor or even just with Firestorm and some chaff, though. The AI doesn't understand the concept of moving away from location based AoE.

mirror doesnt stay in one position anymore and he doesnt use skills left to right like he use to as well...i still hammered him with AoE skills till he was dead. still easy to beat.

Iron Mist and Obsidian Flame and Crystal Wave did it for me - I didn't use the hex but rather let him use it on me, then obsidian flamed + crystal waved him to death.

Easy as pie.

Heh... i just drag along all the PBAoE skills i can, he doesnt use them all at once, so as long as you use yours all at once, youll kill him first.

The first time i killed him took me about 10 seconds, i just ran up to him, used earthquake, aftershock, crystal wave, pheonix, then obsidian flame.

Second time i brought Shockwave, Aftershock,Teineis Crystals, Crystal Wave, and Flame Busrt, killed him 6 seconds (1 second to run up to him, 5 seconds to whip off my spells)

He used one of my PBAoE spells about once every 3 seconds, so it doesnt hurt too much (And if you bring AoR he usually wastes the first second putting it up)

the dopple uses skills left>Right, so he casts Iron Mist first, granting you immunity, while you spam the holy cheese and pickle out of Water Trident.

(apparantly the dopple takes double cold damage, i was planing to Bitter Chill spam him on my necro, and i was hitting ~150 per chill, he died so fast i couldn't blink, so double damage from cold FTW)

Go the monk route. Raise Smiting to maximum ranks, cast Holy Wrath, Retribution, and use healing breeze as your self-heal.

Cast Holy Wrath and Retribution outside, before you activate the cutscene. The Doppleganger won't use healing breeze unless you inflict some sort of degen on it.

i wish he did use skills left to right but he doesnt..which is kind of frustrating..i beat mirror recently with earth elementalist and he used fourth skill first...to my surprise..and he also ran away from my AoE attacks. he use to just stand there and cop the damage.

Just a general FYI, links to searchs are based on your id, you can't link to them in this manner.

I also merged the 2 Doppelganger threads together. Some of the information in the old thread is out of date, but some of the advice is still good.

Generally speaking, the AI is "smarter" than it was when the original post was made.
Things to remember:
1. If you take any AOE DOT spells, don't cast them yourself, the Doppelganger will just run out of them. They can however be useful to keep him/her busy while you cast something else. You can then run out of it's effect! Beware Meteor Shower! If you bring it, make sure you cast it before the Doppleganger does. Otherwise you'll be the one knocked down!
2. You don't have to bring 8 skills. Determine which skills you want to bring and why! Have your strategy figured out ahead of time as to which skills you are going to cast and in which order. If you're only going to use 4 skills, make sure that either the rest of your skill bar is empty OR that you fill it with skills that can't be used against you. I generally fill it with Attunements, on occasion the Doppelganger will waste time casting these rather than attacking. Cast your attunement before you enter and off you go!
3. Don't be afraid to try different things, to see how the Doppleganger reacts to them. For example, the Doppleganger uses a bow at range and an axe up close, so try using Sliver Armor and getting up next to him. He'll use the axe on you and Sliver Armor will really hurt! Even if he has cast it too, all you need to do is not attack or cast spells on him. I'd suggest using Glyph of Renewal to instantly recharge Sliver Armor, in case once wasn't enough to take him/her out.

Just a couple of suggestions of thing s to try. There are a lot of ways to defeat him/her, as mentioned above, don't be afraid to experiment.
