hi, ive been lurking through the gw forums for the last week and ive made up my decision to buy the game.

ive tried to hunt down the answer to this question, but i havent found what im looking for so ill ask here--

is anything lost when you lose a pvp match? and is anything won when you win a fight? and how exactly does it work out if this is the case?

ive played a lot of d2 and one thing i that bothered me was the fact that winning a fight against another person resulted in worthless gold dropping from their bodies. i also played some runescape in my day (yes.. i was a member for a few months) and the one thing that kept me going in that game was the fact that you could actually get nice gear for pking or dueling others.

thanks.

You won't lose anything for losing, you can get stuff for winning. There are 3 types of PvP: Random Arena matches that give nothing but experience and a lot of fun, Guild versus Guild Battles that give you a higher ranking on the Ladder and then there's the Tombs which, if you win, give you a Sigil, with which you can aquire a Guild Hall, and a rare item.

Currently there is no 1v1 in the game, unless you do it on your own (i.e. make a larger match, and have some of the players sit and watch while two people duke it out).

Guild Wars was not designed with 1v1 balance in mind, but its team balance is superb.

pvp options are rediculously limited for a game that claims to be pvp oriented

It's very good PvP though. Most games, including D2, are lopsided badly. In this one almost any class combo choice can be great in a match. Maybe not any combo but a large percentage anyway.

Not only that but this game gets it's money for servers from game sales. Expect them to dish out a little bit more every 4-6 months to keep their revenue flowing. It's the way the game is and that's alright with me.

I really enjoyed the PvE and PvP so far, it took a bit of getting used to being so different from the other MMO's I've played.

looks like they are at least adding varying maps to arena battles this week, more variety at least. i still would like to see options for easy 1x1, 2x2, selecting your own team in any arena etc.
