I've had some luck with putting Mending(healing) and / or Retribution(smiting) on my pet and spamming the healing spells; Comfort Animal(beast mastery?) and Orison of Healing(healing, duh).
Of course you also want to be able to dish out damage yourself, so spread out the attribute points between Beast Mastery, Expertise, Marksmanship, Healing Prayers and Smiting Prayers. Dodge would be a skill I highly recommend for soloing.
I personally take henchmen along if I'm not grouped with other people. Yeah they drag down experience and suck up gold, but You get to keep all the salvage you want. Plus you can't really solo the huge groups of mobs. =/
Be interesting to see what other people have to say. Hope this helped.
Frag you later

hmm but splitting up skill points into allll thouse attributes wouldnt that make me weak all around? or are you saying like put like 1 or 2 into smite and healing and the rest into beast mastery and marksmenship

Ok, just in case any newbie is following this thread... there is a difference between skill points and attribute points. The attribute points you can play with rearranging as you like. The skill points you use to buy the skills that go in your little bar at the bottom of the HUD. You keep those skills. (Although there may be a point in game where you can switch secondary professions. In which case, you would lose those skills.)
To answer your question. No, it won't make you weak. I've found having the different attributes all bumped a little allows me to be really flexible with my tactics. If one tactic doesn't work, I can switch to another that does. And there have been a few times where I couldn't reach the mobs and my pet couldn't get to them. If your pet can't attack, you need to have good marksmanship so you can dish out damage yourself.
Personally I've got my character set up so both me and my pet dish out decent, but not great damage. When you add it up, it becomes really impressive. It's great being able to tie up a melee mob with my pet and use Distracting shot on the casters at same time. My pet lives until caster is dead at which point I heal him if I have to and gang up on the melee mob(s).
I can't tell you how to play your character, only what works for me. Beast Mastery will make your pet a lot more effective, but without Marksmanship you can not use your bow to deal damage. Also the really good bows tend to require higher Marksmanship to use at all. Expertise lets you use all of your skills more often, even the ones relating to your pet. The monk attributes would really be much more open as to how much you want to invest in them. Depends on if you want to prevent pet from taking damage, increase your pet's damage output, or be able to keep it healed even when it's in the middle of a horde of charr or something. I love the using the Retribution skill (smiting prayers) because it decreases the damage my pet takes while increasing the damage to whatever he is fighting.
You can also check out the Tools/utility threads for calculators that will help you figure out exactly how many points to put into each attribute. Should give you a rough idea of how much offense and defense you are capable of.
Hope that helps.

Firstly, I hope that you are using this build for PvE, becuase I dont think this will work too well for PvP (but thats just my opinion)
There are many skills that will work in favor for your pet. In my opinion, a pet should be really good against any caster, with all the different lunges and strikes you can have your pet do, while you heal it.
Heres a nice set of combos that I came up with, but never tested personally, if you decide to try it, please PM me with details on the Pro's and Cons of it.
Start out with Call of Protection (120 sec duration) as a defensive precast, shouldn't have to cast this too often. Upon contact with enemies, use Call of Haste (increased attack and movement speed). If your pet is attacking any casters, preferably Mo or Ele, use disrupting lunge, which disables the skill that they are casting for 20 seconds. Melandru's Assualt does nicely against large crowds because almost everyone has at least one enchantment of them. Feral Lunge is nice to counter healing breezes, and Predatures' Lunge is great to replenish your pet's life. I would suggest spamming Orison of healing, comfort animal, and Healing breezes whenever you have a chance, but dont let this keep you from using some type of attack. All you need to do is keep you pet alive. Ferocious Strike does nicely to replenish your energy in case you run out.
