Yellow Salvageable Items?

While doing a mission today, one of the named dwarves dropped a Beastmaster Harness of Major Tactics. The name of this item appears yellow and it can be salvaged. However, I haven't done so yet because I was afraid of messing up the item. How do I get what I'm supposed to out of this item? I thought I might have to use an Expert Salvage kit, but didn't want to try anything until I found out from someone who knew for sure.

Make sure to check to see if the Item is Unidentified. If so, use the Indentification Kit First, then the Expert Salvage Kit on it.
