View Full Version : Troll Unguent.
Well, I was wondering, what is your take on Troll Unguent in PVP? is it good? bad? useless?
I'm not sure what to do with this. I might want to take it in case of bad healers/lack of healers , but i'm not sure... please tell me, what you think (in general)
I like it a lot in PvP actually. This is mostly because Rangers don't tend to get attacked or chased in PvP a lot (and if they do they have the means to repel the chasers) so if you take some damage you can simply step back a few steps and use this to replenish your health (if even necessary), and then get right back into combat which saves quite a lot of time. You don't even need to have it at maximum attribute points in order for this to be useful either.

Troll Unguent is a great skill to have, it is the only skill that wasn't removed from my skill bar throughout beta
In every one of my R builds i've carried troll ungent over other class self heals (haven't made a R/Mo before you get on that...) Its just such a great skill if your putting points into wilderness survival.
You can completely negate life drain on you and with high enough survival skills can greatly decrease direct damage intake. Its got a fairly long cast time but is worth the wait.

It's very good to have in almost every PvE situation, however, I usually don't see myself use it in PvP.
But it all depends on your playing style. I tend to Flee or activate my Evasion skills when I get rushed by Warriors. Many other Rangers activate Troll Unguent and hope their assailants give up before it deactivates.
As great as it is, Troll Unguent won't save you all the time. Although the bars of regeneration it gives are significant, it has a recharge timer that is just as long as its effect time... which means you will be vulnerable for 2 seconds every 10 seconds while you are recasting it.
So unless you are gaining a significant amount of health ( i.e. Damage taken << Total health healed by Unguent ) after each cast to make up for those 2 seconds of vulnerability, it can only be really used as a desperate delaying factor.
True it can't be used as a primary heal in PvP but it really helps slow down the damage. I personnaly keep it in reserve, if i start taking alot of hits first my dodge's go on. If i continue to be hurt and say get to 50% health ungent is activated while the dodges are on.
You can keep dodges activated while ungent heals allowing you to continue attacking with nice life regen and nice evasive action. However as said, this all depends on your play style and your build.
Above i'm talking about one of my r/w builds but that is not the case for all my rangers. However i still think its one of the best healing skills in the game, just because you can negate life drain which can be so troublesome for your monk friends mid-battle.
The 3 second activation time is practically punitive, limiting usage of the skill to mainly out-of-combat situations. If fighting an enemy mesmer, warrior, or ranger then good luck activating it.
I have trouble interrupting monks with 3 interrupts on my skill bar, but I can interrupt a ranger 100% of the time using Unguent (as long as he doesn't "evade")
Anyway, as far as best healing skills - except for monks' heals it is the only one which does not require an enemy target (like the Necromancer hexes do). Rather than being 'one of the best', it's more like 'one of the only'.

I agree, the cast time is horrible, and oftentimes makes this skill useless during combat. I keep it on my skill bar anyways, so when Im waiting for my light skills to recharge, I take that time to cast troll...
