I just ID'ed some light blue item (don't remember what) and this unlocked a Monk rune for me (didn't give the rune, just unlocked it). As the item is of little use for me can I safely throw it away?

Yes.
Those unlock messages mean you then have that available for the lvl 20 PvP chars you may make.

If you don't want the rune, you might check around to see if your guildmates do or see if you can trade it for a rune you do want.

Just to add; use an Expert Salvage Kit to get the rune out of it.

BTW, what to the different colored items mean? I just got a purple and I can't figure out what it means.

Gold = rare, Purple = really rare. Or something along those lines.
The order goes this way normal, blue, purple then yellow, i.e. yellow/gold is the rarest. It also indicates a better item.

colors of the items are as so
white = normal
blue = uncommon
purple = rare
yellow = very rare
items may also have special conditions, such as
-precious
-highly salvagable
-rune
-hilt
-pommel
-etc
essentially if it has any color besides white you should use a identification kit on it. an expert salvage kit can get you the runes and other stuff.

however you can't always get something out of the gold... I picked up some gold boss' armor id'd it said what ever unlocked tried to use the expert salvage on it got only 6 iron ingots

I'm a bit confused here, could you please explain this more clearly, because I'm planning to buy the game.
I can think of a dozen ways that your sentence above is confusing:
For example, what does "for the lvl 20 PVP chars you may make" mean? I thought that you started out by making a level 1, then going on various quests and doing PVE, and then you could use your character for PVP anytime you wanted?
Do you need to make a seperate character for PVE and another seperate character for PVP? If you don't need to make seperate characters for PVE and PVP, then why did you word your sentence as you did above? That is what confused me.
Next, what does "then have available" mean in that sentence? Does that mean once you unlock something, that it is available for any character you make? So if you make multiple chars then it is unlocked?
And is it only available at level 20? I thought if you unlocked something that it was available at any level.
See what I mean about your sentence being totally confusing to someone who is just going to get the game.
I really want to understand what unlocking means and all my questions here.....
