I'm running Guild Wars on two laptops, one works just fine with everything maxed out, but the other just does not want to cooperate even at the lowest graphics setting. Specifically, the ground starts to go all "checkerboard" like with missing boxes of textures everywhere, or the whole ground just going black. Other than that, it gets particularly laggy in towns. That was before installing the latest Omega drivers. With it, the ground messes up less, but instead bushes and trees start doing the missing texture thing every now and then. All this happens on the lowest quality. When I try to run it on based on the quality the game recommends, it's just plain black ground, and crap for framerate.

The one that works is set as such;
Win XP SP2
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 on the latest Omega driver
512MB RAM
Pentium M 1.5ghz

The one that DOESN'T, is as such;
Win XP SP1
ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 on the same Omega driver
512MB RAM
Pentium M 1.6ghz

Thank you for posting your solution!

A note to others having this or a similar problem. I wholly recommend a new install of windows and SP2 if nothing else seems to fix your problem. System files can become corrupt or saved incorrectly over tiem and cause strange errors. the other thing is when you update system files, sometimes there may be two version on your drive and the system can hang when trying to decide which to use.

Bottom line, do a fresh install at least once a year. If you have not ever done this, do it this weekend!
