View Full Version : Viable PvP R/E Build Here?

Decided to finally go with R/E because I found a nice max damage fiery dead bow, which will work nicely with Mark of Rodgort.
1 - poison arrow
2 - mark of rodgort
3 - distracting shot
4 - dual shot
5 - glyph of lesser energy
6 - antidote signet
7 - troll unguent
8 - pin down
Pretty much I will be using Mark of Rodgort on an enemy player, then using dual shot / poison arrow to give him or her lots of health degeneration. I know that Incendiary Arrows is available to the ranger, setting an enemy on fire, but its just for one arrow, and has a less convenient recharge and activation time, where as Mark of Rodgort can last as long as 18 seconds causing the enemy to be set on fire whenever he is hit with fire damage (hence the fiery bow)
I'd use distracting shot on monks and such healing or enemies ressurecting.
I put in glyph of lesser energy so that Mark of Rodgort was cheaper, and if I recall correctly Expertise lower the cost of glyph type spells, so that can reduce the total cost further.
Antidote signet 'cause I can't always rely on the monk (if we even have one on the team) to get rid of those pesky conditions.
Troll Unguent to counter health degeneration, and just a nice healing skill.
And my last skill I was unsure of, either Resurection Signet, Pin Down (for those damn runners) or maybe a running-type skill for myself.
Any suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated, as my last (and first) character was a W/Mo, which does okay PvE and PvP but is VERY boring, and Rangers always seemed like an interesting build to me, being able to put just about any condition an enemy.

First I want to correct you on incendiary arrows - For 8 seconds, targets struck by your ARROWS are interrupted and set on fire for 1-3 seconds. This is an elite skill. Meaning all your arrows for the next 8 secs (Around 4 shots).
Another is why Dual Shot. I can understand if you combine it with Ignite Arrows but with Poison Arrow wont make em suffer double poison damage. I would replace Dual Shot with Hunter's Shot for it adds damage, cost 5 energy instead of 10, and if foe is running or knocked down when hit with Hunter's Shot they will bleed for 3-21 secs.
Distracting Shot is helpfull but hard to time it right when someone is casting a skill or spell for most skills are around 1-2 secs and if it's and elementalist casting a spell like fire storm it is very easy to get away from. But if your pretty good at timing it right stick with it and if not choose another skill.
For PvE take res signet instead of Pin Down but if your doing PvP stick with Pin Down.

So, do you think I should just drop ele for my 2ndary, and go with Incendiary Arrows? I love the "on fire" condition, as it gives crazy degeneration, but it lasts for so little time, so I was looking to get the most shots in that would set an enemy "on fire" (or "burning"? I forget what its called).
If I were to go with Incendiary Arrows.. I don't think it'd do me any good becoming an ele 2ndary (im still in pre-searing waiting to decide which 2ndary profession, I started a PvE ranger because I have to unlock skills). Though I did fear that I was avoiding Incendiary Arrows a bit.
Dual Shot, I was guessing that when combined with Mark of Rodgort would stack the "on fire" condition, as It'd be 2 arrows, each hitting and causing the condition. Though good point on Hunter's Shot, it's a pretty sick attack that is energy-cheap, recharges fast, no activation time, and can cause bleeding...
You see what I had in mind with this build was to get as much health degeneration on a foe, enough to negate a good Healing Breeze, but I totally forgot about conjure phantasm, from the mesmer. Perhaps I might go with mesmer as my 2ndary...
Distracting shot I will be mainly using for enemys trying to res their allies, and for most builds they will be left with using a signet which I could defenitly spot and hit with before they got done res'ing. However, I can see this skill being easily replaced, as I could just stack up some heavy damage and health degen and most likely kill the person res'ing before hes done. Just maybe.
I guess the glyph was also an almost useless skill, just for Mark of Rodgort.
Thanks Glenn
Anyone have any suggestions or experience with a R/Me?

Hmm, I've come up with some possibilites as to my build... First off here's what I have as a backbone for ranger skills
Incendiary Arrows (set foes on fire)
Apply Poison (poison foes)
Hunter's Shot (damage, bleeding)
Antidote Signet (heal from some conditions)
Troll Unguent (heal)
That leaves 3 skills from the 2nd profession, or 2 if I throw in Pin Down.
If I went R/W
I'd use Flurry, for the attack rate, to squeeze in some extra shots when I have Incendiary Arrows and Apply Poison running. Then I suppose Sprint and Resurrection Signet. This doesn't seem like the best 2ndary to get, as it only benefits by increased attack rate.
If I went R/Me
I'd use Conjure Phantasm, for the extra health degeneration, though I think that with all my other conditions on my foe, even with a decent Healing Breeze active I'd have my foe at the max health degeneration. Oh well, the more the merrier.
Also Fragility looks like it would fit nicely here, as I'll be using conditions to kill my foes.
Also maybe Shatter Enchantment to get rid of any health regen enchantments foes try to use to counter my conditions... Or Ethereal Burden to slow runners. (this would replace Pin Down)
edit - I skipped over Epidemic! I'd defenitly bring this along with me.
If I went R/N
Life Siphon, similar to Phantasm except I get some health regen... and from that other thread Mark of Pain sposively works aright? Strip Enchantment looks promising... Enfeeble and Faintheartedness looks like good fun... aswell as Parasitic Bond
Price of Failure + one of the many evasion-type ranger skills could really punish some of those warriors getting up close to me... but how often will that happen?
This is all a rough outline to a decent PvP ranger, and I don't plan on going with Mo or E as my 2ndary.
Any Input will help. I wish I could edit the title..

Another skill that would help you if you use a firey bow: Conjure flames, look it up and you will see why

Will I'll throw in another good tip which I use if your going with Elementalist as a secondary. If you do have a firey bow and you use both conjure flames and mark of rodgort and use barrage on group of enemies. Since conjure flames and mark of rodgort are not preparation skills they wont be removed when using barrage.

Mark of Rodgort costs 25 energy, with energy pool of 25-30 as ranger you would have problems using it. You mentioned glyph of lesser energy, that requires 5 energy and saves you 15 so really the mark of Rodgort would be 15 energy cost and a total activation time 1+2 = 3 and 2 skill slots. Its not impossible combination but these are things to keep in mind with a ranger.
