What does the Burn effect do exactly

So on spells like immolate where it says it will do X damage and the target will burn(or maybe it says they will be on fire) for 2 seconds, what exactly does that last part mean. I don't see any dmg stats ticking off over their head like a DoT. Does that mean anything tangible, or am I just supposed to feel better about the cool graphic?

When I use burning skills I see a decrease in health VERY slowly but I think most armors can absorb it. Not sure though, its questionable.

Fire is a condition that gives the target -7 health generation (<<<<<<<) which works out to 14 damage per second.
