You have two basic paths for summoning. You can either try to make lots of weak little minions and blow them up with Death Nova, or you can try to make your minions last as long as possilble. For the first build, you want to go with Animate Bone Minions (beause you get 2 weak ones instead of 1 strong one), Death Nova, and probably something like Taste of Death.
For the second type, you'll want Bone Horrors or Bone Fiends. And then Blood of the Master. And probably Verata's Sacrifice eventually.
As for a secondary profession, I started my summoner as a N/R so I could have a Pet, and the pet definitely helps out. It helps keep the mobs off of you until you get a corpse to summon from. If you're going for long-lasting minions, a N/Mo might be good because you can heal your minions with more than just Blood of the Master and Verata's Sacrifice.
So, if you want to maximize the number of minions you have (a true overlord) go for N/R and pick a pet up. If you want to maximize the life of your minions, pick up N/Mo.

thanks man, i'll consider both, although with a ranger u have to keep out two skills for your pet and prob need to put att points in beast mastery
I think im gonna work on that N/Mo minion master. is there any skill sets anyone can suggest w/ attribute points?

Yeah, that's the most common reason that people stop using their pet as a ranger secondary. They think you can get by using a pet with no points in Beast Mastery, and then they decide their pet sucks. But the power of the pet is directly determined by your Beast Mastery score, so if you don't put any points in it (or only put 1 or 2) then of course your pet is going to suck, and it's not really worth using.
I wouldn't bother with Comfort Animal, though. Unless you're a primary ranger or are using your pet as a primary attack, in which case you will have several pet skills, rather than just Charm and Comfort.

It would also depend on what your planning on using your minion master for. For PvE a ranger secondary could be good because you get the pet and a possible bow attack to create bodies faster.
But for PvP consider that the only way a body will be there is if an enemy or an ally dies. In this case I like N/Mo because you can create a minion or two and then bring the player back to life. Players usually dont immediatly attack a suddenly raised person allowing them to run back so you dont have the immediate death factor that you run into in PvE. Although even in PvE a res then death means one more body for minions.
But I wouldnt suggest u use monk spells to heal minions as you will have so many and, as far as i know, there arent any keys to see just minion names, or toggle between undead ally targets. Instead use monk healing spells to heal yourself after using BotM or Verata's Sacrifice.
Also Consider Verata's Aura as a way of turning enemy minions against you. Mostly I am suggesting this for PvP because I have noticed a rise in Me/N minion masters using fast casting to raise minions before other necros can.
Also for PvP consider Defile Flesh, Lingering Curse, and Malign Intervention to lower monks effective healing by TONS. Drops ANYONE quicky and it raises a masterless bone horror on death but Verata's Gaze fixes that problem in a hurry. Havent done it before So im not sure but I dont think that horror uses up the body so you can then make another ^^. 2 horrors from each corpse will help alot.
OK maybe I gave away more info than the other Good minion masters would like me to...oops...but I like letting people know. As for giving out skillsets...FIND YOUR OWN!!!! I gave you nice info but thats all you get from me.

Ok so malign intervention DOES use the corpse, which I have actually found useful in PvP vs other necros...death necros with no bodies to manipulate = useless ^^
You cant use your allies bodies unless u take an animate skill but with verata's gaze why even bother? just steal the other necro's undead.
And N/R is a bad idea in my mind. Because from what I understand the strength of the pet is determined more by beast master attribute than by its level. If alll you want is a body to manipulate over and over again sure. Its easy and fast to raise a dead pet and let it die to create another body for you. But thats all I see it being.
N/Mo allows you to res dead teammates and gives you access to a few tricks that keep minions(mostly Bone Fiends) Alive for a long long time. having 8+ archers isnt a bad thing at all.
