I always liked the Me/N build, based around hexes, curses, and health degen.

Here are some examples of builds you can make out of the combinations:

Me/Mo: Rapid Resser
Me/E: Fastcast Burner
Me/W: Illusionary Weaponry Mesmer
Me/N: Heavy Hex, DOT.
Me/R: Interrupter

Ele, Monk and Necro were the classes I was seriously considering when I created my mesmer.

Ele - fastcast burner like what Nobleman said. Plus, you can siphon energy from your opponent.

Monk secondary - self sufficient healing, fast resurrection. energy siphon spells might work well too.

Necro - this is what I chose and I am loving it (I do RP and I my mesmer has a dark background so I opted for this as well). Energy draining spells are common for mesmers while Necro got several life draining spells. Works well together. =)

Well I'll just give you a brief look into some possibilities each secondary can give you:

Necro: You can use Blood Magic to keep yourself alive. Combined with Illusion Magic, you can easily reach 10 degen on a target and then use some complimentary skills. Blood Magic allows you to damage and heal at the same time, so thats allways a plus.
Or you could go Curses and use skills that help you out by hindering or damaging mellee targets. You can weaken them, cause disease, send conditions to them, slow down their attack speed with skills like Shadow of Fear and Faintheartedness, as well as put degeneration on them.
Death Magic is more of the damage tree, but with a little Fast Casting you could get minions up quickly, or you can just carry around a few spells like Putrid Explosion to do some good damage to your enemies.

Monk: Healing and Protection will both help you survive. You can also use them to support your team, though I prefer useing Protection with my Mesmer Primary and combining it with either Domination or Illusion for offensive abilities.
Smiting offers you some nice damage and buffing enchantments as well.

Warrior: I prefer this class as a secondary for Illusionary Weaponrists. Otherwise you should use it if you want to go mellee with your mesmer. Tactics offers some great stances that allow you to avoid damage, as well as the Healing Signet. You could instead invest in one weapon mastery (i wouldnt reccomend hammer for a Mesmer Primary, my preference is Swordsmanship) and become something similar to the 'Spell Slasher' premade build. Physical Resistance (Inspiration Magic) and Distortion (Illusion) are both great stances for mellee mesmers.

Ele: Mostly a damage dealing here. You would compliment your Mesmer skills with a tree from the ele for Direct Damage.
You could instead use armor buffs and wards as team support and then look to the Mesmer side for offensive skills.

Ranger: Ranger offers the ability to damage or further hinder casters with bow skills, or maybe you want to lay a few defensive traps.
It can also give you some self heal in the form of Troll Unguent and Antidote Signet. Primarily you would use bow attacks to support your Mesmer Skills in this case. There use to be a 'Dazer' premade PvP character that was a Me/R wielding Concussion, Distracting, and Precision shot along with some mesmer skills. It could be a good shutdown character but the high cost of Concussion Shot (25 energy) makes it a bit energy reliant.

Theres some info on the way of the Mesmer.

I am a M/E, but I think I'll go M/R when I ascend, because I've seen some rangers in action and their pets are cool too, btw, is there a stat that decides the lvl of a pet? And how do pets lvl please?

Pets suck, they do very little dmg, the only up side to them is there life, bad sides are they do very little dmg as said above, they take up a skill (or more depending) they attack very slowly, they take needed skill points up.

you do know that beast mastery increases their attacking power right? I'm RUnning a beast master and i really BEG to differ regarding the pet's damage output. They do ALOT for something you can give buffs that has no drawback...Call of Haste, Call of Protection, Call of Brutality...Trust me, I made a Sword W/Mo start runnin away from my pet cuz he realized its beating him on the damage output.

Hmmm, I think a ME/R is a good combo, since I'm mainly an anticaster type, so help vs meelee is cool
