View Full Version : Ranger Skill Locations

I know we'll eventually have an updated list of locations for skills posted here on GWOnline...whether skill trainers or questgivers...but I thought I'd post a temporary thread here on spots I've found to get ranger skills in-game.
I just recently went to Maguuma Stade, and found a skill trainer there offering me 'Maiming Strike' and 'Scavenger Strike'.
Hope this helps people looking for those particular skills.

The skill trainer in 'Fishermen's Haven' had....
Brutal Strike
Fertile Season
The skill trainers in 'Henge of Denravi' and 'Quarrel Falls' both had the same ranger skills.....
Bestial Pounce
Determined Shot
Otyugh's Shot
Throw Dirt
I absolutely don't know for sure how the questgivers hand out skills as rewards, I THINK it's a random skill based on a certain number of skills for a certain area. The ones I received may not be the ones you would get, but again, we'll know more as time goes by. I'll post some of the ones I've gotten, so at least people will have an idea what they COULD get as a reward. If I'm wrong on how the skill quests work, I apologize...just trying to help.
There is a questgiver in Fishermen's Haven called Watchman Arad that had two skill quests, one called 'The Royal Papers', and another called 'The Lost Princess'.
Both quests give one primary and one secondary skill as a reward. For 'The Royal Papers' he would give me 'Concussion Shot', and for 'The Lost Princess' I could get 'Edge of Extinction'.
I'll try to post some more skill locations later. Hope this helps others.

I haven't found 'Choking Gas' yet on a skill trainer, but I know for certain that Rotscale (bone dragon) uses that skill during the Sanctum Cay mission. You can capture it off him. You also don't have to go hunting for him like some bosses, you have to pass him to complete the mission. He's (so far) always in the same spot, the only swamp area just before the gates to the hill giants.

Marchena in 'Augury Rock' (the area after Sanctum Cay) had a quest that gave me 'Dust Trap'.
Jorn Kudabeh, also in 'Augury Rock', had a quest that gave me 'Winnowing'.
Quick mention for the newer rangers, about the previously mentioned Choking Gas.........
You want to get a skill like that one eventually, if not right away....especially if you solo a lot. There are 3-4 ranger skills that interrupt casting (Choking Gas, Disrupting Lunge, Distracting Shot, Incendiary Arrows, etc...), and at some point you're going to run across a mob or a group of mobs that are smacking you around senseless whenever you run across them. Using an interrupt like Choking Gas will save you in those hard fights. Don't just use those skills against the damage dealers, either......they're very very very useful against healers. I can't tell you how many times I've interrupted a Troll Unguent or Healing Signet to shorten a fight against a mob.
Watch a targeted mob's name at the top of your screen. Whenever a mob casts something, a small picture icon will appear under their name, indicating what they're casting. Time your shot so that the arrow (or pet attack if using Disrupting Lunge) will hit your target JUST as he starts to cast, RIGHT as the icon starts to appear. If you've timed it correctly, you'll hear a brief little distinctive sound that indicates the skill the mob was trying to cast was interrupted, and the icon of his casting will fade out quicker than normal. It takes some practice, but it's not hard anymore once you've successfully done it a few times.
I've been using Distracting Shot recently, and I find that the 20 second skill disabling factor is huge in the right circumstances.
Get one of those skills when you can, new rangers, and test them out. You'll find uses for them, trust me.
Lalenthar
Distracting shot owns agains ANY mob that heals or enchants itself.
I havent had much experience with choking gas though.
Is it ae interupt or no ?

20Sec. all skills? damn that's alot!
I can kill a man in that time when he has no skills. Woot!
Yesterday evening I was looking at those on the site. posion, distracting and so on. But they seem good for PVP.

The 20 second disabling factor on Distracting Shot only affects the skill you interrupt, not all the skills available to the caster.
In other words, if you interrupt a mob casting Troll Unguent, he can't cast Troll Unguent again for at least 20 seconds. He can still use his other skills. But it's usually just that one particular skill that's giving you headaches from a mob anyway...so knowing he can't use the one you really don't want him using for 20 seconds is pretty comforting.
Choking Gas is indeed an Area of Effect spell...meaning it can interrupt more than one caster at the same time if they're close together. I can't swear as to the radius of the effect....it seems to me it covers a small area just around the initial target. But that's great when you're ambushed by 3-4 casters all clumped together. You can hamper their efforts nicely. You'll know it's working if a small cloud of green gas appears at the feet of your target.
Here's a fun combination. I call it 'Ranger Interrupt'. Get all the ranger interrupt skills....well, eventually you'll get them. Then put them in your skill slots and use them against a mob one by one. By the time you've cast the third or fourth interrupt, the first one will be re-charged and ready to go again. If you do it right, the mob won't be able to use most of his skills...ever. I'd suggest trying this with a group of henchmen or other players at least though, not solo. It's a little more difficult that way. If you want to be serious about this combo, take your bow out of use as well, let the others do most of the damage dealing. (Yes, I said get rid of your two-hand-using bow.) Place whatever energy building items you have in your hands instead for this...like a Scroll, Chakram, whichever. Get your energy level up as high as you can. It's a whole different style of playing as a ranger. You've now become the designated 'Interrupt' player for your group. One person in a team dedicated to doing nothing but interrupt enemy casting is a very powerful weapon. Consider as well that your ranger armor is higher than the usual casters can be, so you can survive attacks a lot better...especially if you also keep Troll Unguent to keep you alive.

The Mesmer Energy Denial build is much more effective at that, because interrupting a whole group wouldn't work out too well.
For instance, once person is casting Orison of Healing, you interrupt plus disable that skill, and move on to the next person. Meanwhile, the Monk just goes on to use Shielding Hands, Healing Breezes, and etc. With the energy denial build, you ruin the caster so that their attacks are interrupted, plus they take 100~ dmg, and they have no energy. On top of that, they are afraid to keep casting in fear of more damage.

You're absolutely right, the 'ranger interrupt' build isn't the most effective of that type that you can make....especially for PvP. But for it's a way to have a lot of fun using nothing but your ranger skills.
kal gregor--
Sorry, neglected to respond to your earlier post. I went to Druid's Overlook, and there doesn't seem to be a skill trainer there now. There are some quests I did there, but honestly I forgot to write the rewards down at the time. Anyone else been to Druid's Overlook and could post what they find there as ranger skill rewards for quests?
Incidentally, don't be shy, folks. Surely I'm not the only person finding ranger skills. If you find a trainer or a quest or a named mob with a skill not already posted on this thread, please, feel free to help others by posting the information here yourself. If you're reading this, likely you've been helped by someone else's knowledge from these forums before. Give something back in return every now and then to the forums. It's the nice thing to do.
Thanks

DevilDog,
I believe when you go to a skill trainer and he doesn't show you any skills, then you've already received all the skills he would normally offer, either from another trainer, or by doing a quest. They won't offer you skills you already have.
I'm assuming then that you already have Apply Poison and Healing Spring?

You can capture greater conflagration off (what I assume to be) the ranger boss in the 'last' mission.
If you head South of Foibles Fair in Pre-Searing Ascalon, through the snow and mountains, then through a cave (fighting many ice and stone elementals along the way), you'll eventually come to a fishing village... just East of there is the third Ranger Pre-Searing trainer, Aiden. He teaches both Ignite Arrows and Dual-Shot, handy skills to have early on.

I noticed some skills you can't get from trainers until after you pass through the desert missions after Sanctum Cay (which are kinda rough, and may take a while to win for some people).
If this helps people any, go check through the early zone boss lists posted here on GWOnline. Most if not all of the mobs listed there are still around from Beta, and have some skills that you can't get until much later from trainers.
I believe 'Energizing Wind' is one example. I don't think you can get that from a trainer until reaching Port Sledge, and I haven't run across a quest for that skill yet myself.
(Please, feel free to correct me if you know of a quest that hands that out.)
You can capture that from the last boss in the D'Alessio Seaboard mission, the Tree of Renewal. Also, there's a Tree of Solitude near Beetletun I saw recently that uses that skill.
Some people may want to get that skill early on, and here's two different mobs you can get it from.

Lycaon55,
I've not killed this mob myself, so I cannot verify this information personally yet, but I saw on another site that a person says he found 'Melandru's Arrows' on Uhar Stonehound in the Thunderhead Keep Mission.
I'll explore there in the next few days and let you know what I find if I run across him.
Keizer Soze,
You're absolutely right, Tiger's Fury is a skill every ranger should have. I used it throughout Beta, and man I felt the loss until finding it again in retail. My damage dealing went way up after putting it in my skill bar.
http://www.myimagestore.info/upload/images/4h090617.jpg
I have a fondness for Kindle Arrow/Tiger's Fury...it's my main damage dealing combo. I use high Wilderness Survival attribute levels when soloing in PvE, and I can get an additional 21 fire damage from Kindle Arrows for 24 seconds shooting real fast with Tiger's Fury 33 percent attack speed boost. I set it up so I can cast Tiger's Fury twice before Kindle Arrows ends, keeping that fast high damage going constantly for most of those 24 seconds, and at the end of that second casting, both skills end almost exactly at the same time. Easy to keep track of the casting timing that way.
Oh and hey....folks......pssst.....take a close look at your Ignite Arrows and Kindle Arrows skills in-game. They're not the same as what's listed here on the site at the moment.
(They're still working on gathering info, don't dare blame the folks here at GWO, they're working hard.)
But if you look closely, it's not 12 seconds those skills last....
http://www.myimagestore.info/upload/images/JvU90503.jpg
http://www.myimagestore.info/upload/images/pYF90642.jpg
......it's double that....they both last 24 seconds.
For the new folks, here's the quick explanation on how those two skills work.
Ignite Arrows is an Area of Effect arrow damage skill. When you cast it, your arrows get an additional 3-15 fire damage added to whatever the normal damage is you get from your arrows (mine gets up to 16 damage with a rune added at the moment). In addition, there is now a small 'splash' area (AOE) around your target. If other mobs are standing close to your target mob, they'll get hit with that extra 3-15 fire damage as well. It's an absolutely wonderful skill to use against a group of mobs all clustered together. It's one of the first you get when you start playing the game as a ranger, and you'll find yourself using it for a long time.
Kindle Arrows is almost the exact same skill.....almost. It only affects ONE target. There's no 'splash' damage. Bad in comparison, you say? Not when you look at the fact that this skill can do 5 more damage per hit (mine's at 21 total at the moment), AND it costs 5 less energy to cast. This leaves you more energy for other skills.
When comparing the two fire arrow skills, you lose the ability to hurt more than one mob at a time, but you gain the ability to smack one target HARD for 24 seconds with Kindle Arrows. As I said before, toss in Tiger's Fury, and you get high damage, fast damage, long damage, and cheap damage....all with just a two skill combo.
Try it sometime!

I got the same info about this boss, went in there and captured Melandru's Arrows from him. So yes, the info is good.
I am still looking for punishing shot and Barrage and Lalenthar, Thanks for all the tips you are giving. They are extremely useful. I did not know about Tiger's Fury I will try it. its just that I invested a lot of attributes pts in expertise, marskmanship and wilderness I dont have a lot for beastmastery so My Tiger's fury won't last long.
Lalenthar
I'll have to try that Kindle Arrows / Tiger's Fury combo. I've been using Favorable Winds, Ignite Arrows and Dual shot as an opening combo. The Favorable winds last a long time (mine currently lasts 82 seconds, increases as you bump up Wilderness Survival), and ups the damage to the primary target. I usually get 2 and a half Ignite Arrows per use of Favorable winds. Add Power shot or Penatrating Shot and you can really dish out the damage. Energy use probably isn't as efficient, but if you have armor that regenerates it faster it's pretty good. (Or someone using enchantment on you that boosts regeneration). In my experience using that triple combo, and the high ground groups of mobs died in about 1/3 the amount of time they did when I didn't use the combo. :happy34: Could do over 60 damage to primary target with crappy bow.
Lycaon55 (spelling?)
You do know you can redistribute your attribute points right? For every 250 XP you earn you get one "refund point" and can have a max of 24 at a time of those. So even if you screw up the distribution you can undo it again.

Terik,
Pin Down should be available at the Lion's Arch skill trainer.
keydet,
Your combo sounds good, yep. I like Favorable Winds too.....but man, recently in the later areas it seems everytime I myself put that in my skill slot for PvE I run into groups of enemy archers that all shout with glee, 'Hey, he's making our arrows faster too! Thanks Lalen!'. It's not so bad for me, but poor Alesia (the healer henchman....henchgirl?) gets pincushioned if I take her along. I have to scout around before I use that skill to make sure there's no archers that will benefit from it....or make sure I take the rangers out first.
(Don't quote me that it makes enemy arrows faster too, I THINK it does.....even if it doesn't, I can't take all that dancing around and taunting from the enemy mobs anymore....sniff.....it's mean.)

No!!!! Greater Conf = END OF GAME?!
Sigh...
That skill is so essential to my Assassin build...sigh...I'm rather depressed right now.
While I'm here, I'll throw out this build (sorry to Hijack) just to show how essential Greater Conf is:
Class: Ranger / Warrior
Attributes:
Expertise: 10+2 (61)
Wilderness Survival: 8+2 (37)
Swordsmanship: 12 (97)
Total attribute points used: 195/200
Skills: [Attribute] (Energy, Cast Time, Recharge TIme)
1) Pure Strike [Swordsmanship] (5,0,8) Sword Attack: If Pure Strike hits, you strike for +24 damage. If you are not using a stance, Pure Strike cannot be blocked or evaded.
2) Sever Artery [Swordsmanship] (0,0,4) Sword Attack: If this attack hits, the opponent begins bleeding for 21 seconds, losing health over time.
3) Gash [Swordsmanship] (0,0,7) Sword Attack: If this attack hits a bleeding foe, you strike for 9 more damage and that foe suffers a deep wound, lowering that foe's maximum health by 20% for 17 seconds.
4) Final Thrust [Swordsmanship] (0,0,10) Sword Attack: Lose all adrenaline. If Final Thrust hits, you deal 32 more damage. This damage is doubled if your target was below 50% health.
5) Throw Dirt [Expertise] (5,1,45) Skill: Target touched foe and foes adjacent to your target become blinded for 13 seconds.
6) Greater Conflagration [Wilderness Survival] (5,5,60) Nature Ritual: Create a level 7 Spirit. For creatures within its range, all physical damage is fire damage instead. This Spirit dies after 110 seconds.
7) Apply Poison [Wilderness Survival] (15,2,12) Preparation: For 12 seconds, enemies struck by your physical attacks become poisoned for 11 seconds.
8) Lightning Reflexes [Expertise] (10,0,60) Stance: For 10 seconds, you have a 75% chance to evade melee and arrow attacks, and you attack 33% faster.
Also, a good swap for Throw Dirt, depending on if you're fighting a lot of archer/warriors is
Troll Unguent [Wilderness Survival] (5,3,10) Skill: For 10 seconds, you gain health regeneration +8.
The build can very very easily apply 7 blips of health degeneration, while charging up final thrust and using pure strike to spam for damage.
Oh, and Greater Conf is in there to use Drakescale Armor...+30 ele + 15 fire? +45 AL to Fire total...greater conf = all physical dmg is fire dmg...wait...+45 against phsyical? Isn't that putting you right on par with warriors?
NO! It makesyou better than warriors cuz they lose their 20AL boost to physical due to greater conflagration! YAY!!!!!

Pfff, had this guy in my notes and forgot to post about him.....
Just outside of the entrance to Ventari's Refuge, in the Ettin's Back zone, is an npc questgiver called 'Deep Root'.
He will give you two ranger skill quests. You have to complete the first one to open up access to the second quest.
The first quest he will reward you with 'Predatory Season'.
The second quest he will reward you with 'Savage Shot'.
(Hint: Bring an old boot to do smooshing with.....looooots of spiders will make your acquaintance doing these two quests)
These skills are both available later on from a skill trainer once you reach Amnoon Oasis, but that's a good 2-3 main missions away I beleive, so here's a way to get them earlier and without having to spend skill points.
Lalenthar
(Still trying to post the quests I come across, but I'm working on my nifty 15k armor pieces and getting them infused, etc.....so I'm running around doing that for a bit.)

I've seen Barrage used by the skeletal archers in the Fissure of Woes, and used with devastating results too. I have yet to find a boss archer which carries it, but atleast its another place to look for Barrage, if Markis isn't being counted as a boss (which is BS . . . ).
Copperhammer Mines is west of the Iron Mines of Moladune. Its can be difficult to get there; their are alot of large groups of dwarves that can really do damage fast. The numerous ice imps and avicara pose a significant threat as well. If you start going the wrong way, you'll find Jade Armor waiting for you . . . so turn around and try a different route that will lead to Copperhammer.
Granite Citadel is significantly easier to get to, but you must start from Copperhammer. There are ice imps and trolls along the way, with some dwarves when you are closer to Granite.
Choking Gas, for an ealier query, can be obtained from Rotscale, or any other Bone Dragon boss. The Bone Dragons, while intimidating in appearance, are quite easy. I don't know if it can be bought . . .

I can verify that with the new game update, they've changed Markis into a 'boss' mob (which I think is how he was intended, he was just bugged).
Markis, the last boss in the Iron Mines of Moladune mission, indeed has 'Barrage' that you can capture off him now.

Assuming you are still in pre searing and still checking this thread for your answer, you are missing Ignite Arrows and Dual shot from Aidan, He is in Wizards Folly, hang a left as you enter from Ashford and cross the river then go through the little village area and you can find him a little further on. Or if you talk to the Bard lady in ashford she gives you a quest to enchant a horn, once you do that you have to deliver the horn to Aidan, and this provides you with a nice Quest arrow to take you to him.

Louis Msia,
Tiger's Fury is available as a quest from Tirzah in Seeker's Passage, which is located to the northeast of Amnoon Oasis in the desert region.
Head out east of Amnoon Oasis into the zone Prophet's Path. Go to the northeast corner of that zone to find the entrance to the Salt Flats zone. From there head northwest to find the entrance to the village of Seeker's Passage.
After passing through the desert missions, Tiger's Fury is also available later on from a skill trainer in the city of Droknar's Forge.

Thull the Bull in Spearhead Peak. Start in copperhammer mines and take the fork to the right. I have not gotten this one yet, but I know it's possible. It is, however, extremely aggrovating to get. Since it's a pet attack, he needs a pet. However the pet is extremely fragile and bots will just slaughter it, even when you tell them specifically to attack something else. So you need to go with humans and make sure they all understand not to kill the boss or attack his pet, or use AOE damage. Not only that, but he doesn't even start with a pet, you have to wait for him to charm one. And to top it all off other enemies can steal the pet before he has a chance to charm it. I reccommend putting this one off until you've got every other elite skill.

Tylana,
Ulhar Stonehound can appear in more than one spot in the Thunderhead Keep mission.
He and some of the other 'stone summit' bosses (The Judge, Bolis Hillshaker, etc...) are on a random spawn rotation. Sometimes you'll see him spawn at the first boss location by the bridge, other times by the large gate, sometimes even as Lycaon55 says, during the fight to hold the fort. Other times, a different boss will be in the same spawning spot.
He usually came up for me most often as the very first boss you encounter when you take that first bridge to the left...just before the city. But I also saw him 2-3 times in the city itself, standing near the large gate you can't open....and at least once more as a boss that fought during the fort scene.
He's one of the bosses you can't pinpoint every time.......but he's around in there somewhere!

Brynn,
Thanks for the information, and yes, it does help knowing you can get those two skills from the same mob.
I believe you can't purchase either of those skills from trainers until after the Sanctum Cay mission, so knowing you can capture them off a mob in an area you can reach quickly from Lion's Arch is very helpful....especially if you're trying to incorporate them into your playing early.
I would like to point out though that Barbed Trap isn't actually an 'elite' skill. A way to check, is that anything available from a skill trainer is a 'regular' skill. If you look at the skill trainer list from the front page here, you can see that you can purchase Barbed Trap from the skill trainer in The Amnoon Oasis.
(Also, whenever you do capture an elite skill, their names will be highlighted a different golden color than all your other skills, if you look at your skill list by pressing 'k' in-game. Their icon outline is also shaped slightly different than others when it's in your skill bar....looks kind of like there's a golden picture frame around it.)
And man, don't even ask me WHY some skills are considered 'elite' and others aren't. The whole issue revolves around the fact that you can only have one elite skill at a time in your skill bar. The developers finally decided on the certain skills they only wanted you to be able to use one at a time, and those are the ones that came out in the retail version as such. I can think of 3-4 skills that should have been put in that category, but they're considered regular skills....and vice-versa.
Bah.
But thanks again, Brynn. It's helpful to know you can get those skills there.

Here is a mob you can get a few powers from.I got Pointblank, and tigers fury off of him. I couldnt remember the name so i just posted a lil map. He also cast read the winds but its hard to get since he does it right at the begining of the fight. He may have a few others im not sure. Hes only like level 13 or so. Melp the Harpooner might be incorrectly listed as having Spike Trap.
I know it's on Vulg Painbrain in the Ring of Fire mission, but Melp may not have it anymore. The elite skills are supposed to be available once you pass the desert missions...and Watchtower Coast is well before those areas. Melp was one of the first named mobs to be listed as having an elite skill for retail, but it's possible that was an error on the developers part, and the developers moved it off of him.
Anyone confirm they captured that skill off him recently?
If not, people looking for that skill, you may have to wait until the Ring of Fire mission to capture it.
(Ah, but as it's been posted too, Melp does have good 'regular' skills to grab earlier than you can buy them from trainers....so don't bypass him if looking for those.)

I forgot to mention that Escape being a stance, it does not appear when the boss uses it so keep tapping on your mouse. I'll post more if i find anything else.
Hmmm I got Choking Gas from trainer in Droknar's.... it seems slightly nerfed after getting hit with it during Galrath quest. Is it no longer an elite skill? (Was it ever?) Or do I just need to up my Wilderness attrib? (it's 5 natural and have minor rune on armor)
Also I got Apply Poison off of a spider boss somewhere in Kryta. I want to say it was a ways off to the east from mission path out of Aurora Glade. Have to double check.

Choking gas is not an elite skill. I got it off a Bone Dragon boss in one of the missions just before/after Sanctum Cay. I don't know if it *was* an elite skill previously...
Got Marksman's Wager off a boss in the Thirsty River mission, and that is an elite skill (gold border in skill bar, gold lettering in skill list when you press "k")

Lycaon55,
Maxine Coldstone is in the center area of Perdition Rock.
She's where the green arrow is pointing....
http://www.myimagestore.info/upload/images/uQI78022.jpg
...if she's not there, then Harn Coldstone (husband? brother?...who has the mesmer elite skill Obsidian flesh) is probably there instead. Zone out and come back to try for her there the next time.
Harn I know will sometimes roam around the island if you give him the opportunity, whereas Maxine I've killed twice in the same spot.....not sure if she will roam as well, but I wouldn't doubt it.
Both are humans, so they're easy to spot amongst all the beasties.
keydet,
I don't believe Choking Gas has ever been an elite skill. Least I don't recall it being one during beta. It's one that I've always thought should be an elite skill.....but that's just my opinion. It's certainly useful enough to be considered so.
Lastly...
I've been having bandwith issues with my image hoster (myimagestore.info) for GW pics.
It's a great site, but apparently images are only up for a few days if they get 'seen' too much, then the images get removed.
I hate to post pictures here and then have them get deleted a few days later. It's not very helpful to you folks.
I know of a few image hosting sites, but I'm not certain they'll work any different. If anyone knows of an image site they're SURE will let relatively small images stay up for more than a few days, please, let me know.
If I can find a decent host again, I'll re-post some of the earlier pictures to help those who missed them.
Thanks

He's on the western side of the island, away from the main area you're trying to clear for the mission. He's not always in the exact same spot, but if you see Crag Behemoths anywhere, you're in the right general area to find him.
http://www.myimagestore.info/upload/images/xTV51492.jpg
There are tons of boss mobs in this western area, and very likely there will be people gathering groups for a long time just to get skills from this side, rather than finish the mission itself....or at least trying to finish the mission will be a secondary goal. You shouldn't have any trouble finding a group to go get Barrage from him, if you missed it off Markis in the earlier Iron Mines of Moladune mission.
Lalenthar
(And doesn't this critter sound like he'd have the warrior skill, 'hundred blades' instead?...it's the first thing I thought when I saw him, but no, he's a ranger.)
does any1 no where dryders defences is ..... i no the trainer is far in the game...but i jjust wanted to know if there was a quest i could do to get it...thanks
Great posts, this is a very helpful thread. I've been able to obtain "Barrage" off of Markis at the very end of Iron Mines of Moladune, "Marksman's Wager" from Custodian Phebus in the last part of the Thirsty River's Mission, "Melandru's Arrow" from Resnar Mountaininsight right outside of Copperhammer Mines in the Frozen Forest, and "Poison Arrow" from Salani Pippip in Witman's Folley outside of Port Sledge and Droknar's Forge.
However, I've tried for hours on getting "Escape" so I'm going to try the spam SoC approach. I know you can find Whuup Buumbuul right outside of Droknar's Forge and to the left, up the mountainside in a cave full of Trolls. Sometimes it's the warrior version. I haven't tried Snake Dance and I'm hoping there's not a difference between the two.
But what I'm really posting about is if anybody can confirm "Melandru's Resilience" off of the Facet of Nature in the Dragon's Lair Mission. I've tried several times, and not once have I seen it cast it. Can anybody else confirm whether or not the Facet carries this skill? And if they can.. is there anything special about getting it that I should know? I've spent tons of time just keeping it alive, running away, hitting it with poison, phantasm and I got a friend to hex it. Not once has it cast it. Like to know if it's even there or not.
As a quick follow up, I was able to nab "Escape" from Whuup Buumbuul in Talus Chute, which is right outside of Droknar's. Take a left up the mountainside and into the cave, he's a Mountain Troll. Sometimes his warrior counterpart spawns there as well. Personally, I think this is an easier location to get it from than Snake's Dance. It's easy to get to and relatively fast with Henchies.
My method for nabbing it was to take Henchies there, clear out everything in the cave and the Mountain Trolls near him, then leave and suicide my group into the Avaca groups outside of the cave. After successfully killing off my Henchies, I went in and solo'd Whuup, stacking poison, phantasm and feral lunge's bleed with my pet who also helped soak up his minimal damage. I'd stop if he got near "Troll Unguent" time and let him heal up a bit, spamming Signet of Capture the entire away. After a few minutes, I nabbed "Escape" from him. I know I spent some time trying to nab this skill, so I figured I'd share in case someone else is seeking this skill haplessly such as I did for several hours yesterday.

Geron,
The Facet of Nature (second level boss of the Dragon's Lair mission) does indeed have the elite skill 'Melandru's Resilience'.
It's a 'stance' skill, so when it's cast, there won't be a little icon appearing under his/her name like other skills.
Just as you'll have to do with 'Escape', you have to keep clicking on your Signet of Capture when you engage the mob to get a stance skill.
The Facet of Nature casts regular ranger skills which you should already have by now (Pin Down, Troll Unguent, etc.) so Melandru's Resilience should be the only one that the signet will work on.
Remember also that it has to be a skill that was 'just cast', not necessarily the one a mob is casting 'now'.
Capturing the skill....notice Pin Down is already being cast, Melandru's Resilience was 'just cast'......

Skill captured...
http://www.myimagestore.info/upload/images/ied31652.jpg
Now in the skill bar....
http://www.myimagestore.info/upload/images/5Nf31682.jpg
Incidentally, this is the one time you can have TWO elite skills in your skill bar at the same time.....when you capture a second one. You can use both elite skills throughout the entire mission/explorable zone now. When you eventually head back to a city or start a mission over, the newest elite skill will remain in your skill bar, and your original one will be taken out. Don't forget to replace that empty spot with another skill.
Lalenthar
For those who have yet to use a Signet of Capture......don't let all this confuse you. Using one is very simple, and you'll understand how it all works pretty quickly.
Also for those that don't know, yes, you CAN cancel your Signet of Capture if it's capturing a skill you don't want...like if it's grabbing Pin Down which you skipped buying from a trainer, you can cancel the capture and try again for a different skill during the same fight....you just have to be quick to stop the capture. BUT even if it DOES grab one you didn't want, don't freak out, just go get another Signet of Capture, and come back and get the skill you want another time. It's not a life or death situation...the mob will be there again.
Lalenthar, thanks :)
Just as you were typing that nice reply up, I was obtaining "Melandru's Resilience" in the way you had suggested. After capturing "Escape", I decided to do a little research on "Melandru's Resilience", indeed it is a Stance, and so I did what I did to nab "Escape." Worked like a charm.. thanks for all the info and tips, from someone who had been trying these things for a few hours, it's nice to see it come to fruition. Hopefully we can get a massive thread of working strategies to get some of the Elite skills that some people (like myself) may have confusion about obtaining. Thanks again!

(Lalen gets his hunting gear ready....)
This was just mentioned on the front page by Tarrant, and should help ease some of the troubles people may be having getting elite skills.
'The official site has word of some more game updates planned for next week. Of particular note will be the addition of more boss monster locations in higher level maps to help address the issue of capturing elite skills.'
-Tarrant
(and the specific paragraph he was referring to...)
'We are adding more boss monster locations to many high-level maps. This will improve the rate at which players can acquire elite skills by dramatically reducing the number of map clearings required to find and capture elite skills.'
Good news.
Watch, I bet they'll add one or two brand new mobs that have Crippling Shot and Punishing Shot....the only two ranger skills not found so far.
(Lalen thinks somebody forgot to put them on a boss in the game.)

I read in another forum that punishing shot could be found at Yak's Bend on boss Ivan Frostshot. Can anyone confirm? Seems weird that this is the only elite skill found before the desert though.
Still looking for Punishing shot and crippling.

I don't think it's on him anymore. They removed all of the Elites pre-Crystal Desert, it seems.

I captured spike trap off an oakheart boss 2 weeks ago, and i can't remember where, but it was before the desert.
I think, though i'm not sure, it was in a coop mission close to the end, on a sidepath on the right.

About 'Crippling shot'........
I picked up the strategy guide that was released in retail stores just the other day, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking to have something in a hardcopy form to peruse.
Without getting into what's good or bad about the guide, I'd like to point out that there is a very nice section that let's you see what skills are available for your class. It lists every skill, whether you can get the skill from a quest or a trainer, or both. It also lists which skills are elite, and some of the named mobs that have those elite skills.
Of particular interest at the moment is that 'Crippling Shot' is listed as being available from the mob, 'Melandru's Cursed'.
I can verify that as I write this, that mob does NOT have the skill yet. This mob, which is indeed a level 28 'boss' mob, has NO elite skill at all yet. I distinctly recall fighting him in Perdition Rock a week or so ago, and noting that he was the only boss mob in the zone that didn't have an elite skill. I remember thinking, 'this is a bug, he should have a ranger elite skill on him, someone goofed, it'll be fixed later.'
I'm looking at the mob right now (in another window), and just finished fighting him again just for the heck of it, and he's still not using the elite skill....yet.
So for those looking for this skill, when the newest set of updates happens sometime in a day or two, and they add more mobs with elite skills, this is at least one mob that SHOULD be fixed as well and have 'Crippling Shot' on him.
Lalenthar
('Punishing Shot' is listed in the strategy guide as being available from a named Giant called 'Thul Boulderrain'....which I cannot recall running across previously. He might be in Hell's Precipice, which is the only zone I've not been to yet....but I'd ask others to verify first if they've seen this mob. He sounds like a mob from one of the ice zones.)
I was wondering where that skill was... just couldnt find it but that explains a lot

Quick off the mark there Lal, enjoy the cookie ;) Any chance you can psot the area/mission/etc he was found so i can get it in the thread please.
Nice work everyone, now lets hunt down that elusive last skill so i can start to get you all listing each boss' full skill list for the final Skil lentry posts' ;)
The sad thing is you probably all think i'm joking with that last comment, but i'm not >_<
Crippling Shot is indeed found on Melandru's Cursed who is found in Perdition Rock.. Typically where the usual boss spawns are.
As for Punishing Shot.. I'm pretty sure that is found in the Southern Shiverpeaks somewhere off some ranger boss though i'm not positive.
Thank you for that celios, I've also jsut noticed we're missing the boss name for marksmans wager in elona reach if anybody can remember that we'd be down to just finding that punishing shot boss
Found Punishing Shot. It's on a Tundra Giant in Snake Dance called Thul Boulderrain. I found him just south of the Dreadnought's Drift Exit into Snake Dance, in the Southern Shiverpeaks:

Very nice, well done.
Just that one boss to remember now everyone ;)
The boss is Custodian Jenus in Elonas Reach.. I thought this was pretty old and common news. Interesting hahsoo.. Ill have to go grab that. I think its the last ranger elite skill I need.

whoah.. someone once told me you can only have 1 elite skill on your bar at any given time. From the screens I can see Barrage and Punishing Shot on there at the same time :D
so does this mean that I can do somehting like this (once i capture them):
Distracting shot := Punishing Shot
Pin Down := Crippling Shot
Dual Shot + Ignite Arrows := Barrage
Executioner's Strike := Cleave
oh my... that is one mad mad bunch of skills... (for a R/W axe/bow like myself).
please tell me this is possible!
Maxine Coldstone is in the center area of Perdition Rock.
She's where the green arrow is pointing....
...if she's not there, then Harn Coldstone (husband? brother?...who has the mesmer elite skill Obsidian flesh) is probably there instead.
Anyone have any more info on Maxine? I've been to Perdition Rock a buncha times now, got all the other Ranger and Mesmer elites, and the one time I've spotted either of the Coldstones it was Harn and he didn't show up until most of the island was cleared. On all the other trips, I've been by that spot many times and never seen either of them.
Do you have to clear a certain portion of the zone for them to show up?

Umm, when you capture a skill, it is immediately added to your skillbar. Thus, you can have as many Elites as you have SoC's, I guess. In practical terms, you would only have up to three or maybe four depending on the area. Once you go back to town, all but one of the Elites are removed from your Skillbar, and thus you are back to only one Elite. It's a nice bonus for using the SoC in an area, but it's nothing that's Gamebreaking, really.

barrage?
crippling shot?
punishing shot?
which one do you think has the most benefit over it's non-elite counterpart?

Barrage is an Elite you have to plan for in your skillbar, basically don't bring preps.
Crippling shot costs less than Pin Down, but mechanically it's about the same.
Punishing Shot is more equivalent to Savage Shot, since it doesn't have the 3/4ths attack time like Distracting Shot and Concussion Shot.
Of the three, Barrage is probably the best, but Barrage doesn't work well with all builds. I'd rather choose between Barrage, Poison Arrow, and Incindiary Arrows, personally.

There's a ranger 'skill quest' that's not been posted here before, and I wanted to clarify where it starts because it can be a little tricky finding the questgiver. He's one of the npcs not in a town, or just outside of one, so some people have probably never even seen this guy.
(Thanks to Thervold for putting this up on the quest database.)
The quest is called 'Graven Images', and the ranger reward is 'Determined Shot'.
Find Archivist Ithimar in the North Kryta Province. He's in the eastern swamp area surrounded by bog skales. Incidentally, the 'swamp area' here doesn't have poisonous waters....at least, it didn't when I ran across the npc.

Grawl/Witman's Folly
Poison Arrow [Elite]
Custodian Dellus/Elona Reach (mission)
Marksman's Wager [elite]
Nature/Dragon's Lair (mission)
Melandru's Resilience [elite]
In the Thunderhead Keep mission, every time I come accross the boss that has Melandru's Arrows, I can't capture it. I see the boss using the skill, I click my capture signet, and it says I already have the skill. I am very *sure* that I do not have Melandru's Arrows, yet it won't let me capture the skill. Is there a trick to capturing this skill? Do any other bosses have it? I tried 6 times (waste a lot of time...) and every time I always got the message saying I already have the last used skill. I tried spamming the signet as well a couple of times, that didn't work either...
What am I doing wrong?

You have to wait until they FINISH casting the the skill before you can capture it. Melandru's Arrows is a prep, so it takes a while to cast. When you see it on the screen, just keep tapping your SoC at about 1/sec until it sticks. Stop tapping when the capture bar shows up.
Melandru's Arrows is something i can not find between coppermine and thunder
can someone give a better discription of where the monster is located? or is it completely random and sometimes it doesn't spawn. I cleared teh area 6 times and have not found it :(

Epyon96,
You're a little unclear as to which particular mob you're after.
There are two mobs that I know of that have the elite skill 'Melandru's Arrows'.
From what you posted, I THINK you're after not Ulhar, but the other fellow, Resnar Mountainsight. He's in the Frozen Forest exploreable zone between Copperhammer Mines and the Iron Mines of Moladune zone.
http://www.myimagestore.info/upload/images/n9E14811.jpg
This is where I found him today.....once here.....

and then again here the next time very close to the same spot.....
http://www.myimagestore.info/upload/images/Fh214847.jpg
Yes, he can spawn in more than one location in the zone.
I suggest coming down from Copperhammer Mines with a group to come quickly to a location he might spawn. There were at least 3 named mobs all in that one little area there...that's a good spot to look for him.
If he's not up, zone back out and try again.

(This might also help the people having trouble with Ulhar Stonehound in the Thunderhead Keep mission. Here's a different mob you can tackle.)

Most of you know about this, just posting it here for those who don't read the front pages.
From the newest updates from the developers.....
'Added Dwarven Ale for sale on Dwarven Merchants.'
Wait, that's not it......although that's important too...(cough).......here it is.......
'Changed Signet of Capture so that it now targets dead boss monsters. When you use the signet, you are presented with a menu of all of the dead boss monster's skills, and can capture any skill of your choice. This eliminates the need to keep boss monsters alive while trying to capture their skills, and will substantially reduce the difficulty of capturing certain skills that are rarely cast by boss monsters.'
This should greatly help people when looking for skills.
Lalenthar
(And of course this comes AFTER I have to hunt Thul down about 10 times to get Ferocious Strike.)

Could you re-post those pictures plz?
I've been trying to find that Resnar like one and a half hour now. He should be just right outside Coppermines. Also he could be at 2 locations. And 6 different bosses spawn there.
So the chance to meet this Resnar at the "right outside Coppermines'-spot would be around 12% a time. Since i've been there around 30 times now...he should at least spawn there. :s
edit:
lol, after this post i decided to give it one last try. And well, i think Guildwars heard me wonder why it cant be right that he won't spawn. Now finally i got it... :D
There is a nice listing of boss locations in the Boss Guide Index and what skills they have, but the last update is Feb 05. Some of the information is conflicting with locations/skills in this thread. Malla Arrowmane in The Wilds has Flame Trap and Tree of Renewal in D'A Seaboard has Spike Trap (obvious mistake) and Choking Gas. Does the information here go to someone to update the information on the Boss Guide Index?
Does Torr The Relentless in Bloodstone Fen actually have the Antidote Signet?
