View Full Version : Getting confused with my Mesmer build
I suppose I'm just looking for some insight into a good PvE Mesmer build. I love the idea of the Mesmer and until recently I was having a good time with my Domination build.
However, things have been getting more and more difficult, new skills have been found tempting me away from my original set of Domination spells and I find myself rearranging my stats and skills all the time to try to eek out a little bit more damage. Basically I've been losing sight of "The Mesmer Way" in my efforts.
I'm a level 14 Mesmer/Necro, although up until now I've ignored the Necro part and purely took it because I had to take something. I'm having a lot of trouble with mobs it would seem - even Charr. In groups, those Hunters and Stalkers nail me. The casters I never had trouble with, although when focusing my attention on taking them out the melee and ranged creatures tear me apart, which is why I've been frantically changing my setup time after time trying to come up with something better.
I'm finding I need more skills slots than I have - the Domination spells I have access to are all great, but have long recharge times which means I end up dry in the heat of battle if facing groups.
Can you suggest some stats based on a lvl 14 Mesmer and a nice solid skill set for me to use? Bearing in mind the last map marker I got was The Wilds.
Cheers

You could SO do DOTs with Illusion and Curses with your Me/N. You could also add Soul Barbs to that mix for more "oomph!"
I personally don't like to restrict myself to being "pure" (don't get me wrong here, guys, I know there are a lot of good pure-builds out there), but for some reason it always makes me feel like a henchie....
At first, my Me/W was an interrupt guy, Domination + Swordsmanship, but later on in the game (the Desert), I had a lot of trouble keeping alive. I made this character to use IW someday, so then I said to myself, "What the hey, I'll just use Illusion and get used to it, since I'm going to be using it for IW." And guess what! I used to be a Dominatrix (I'm talking about myself, I'm a female), but now I've fallen in love with Illusion and can't get away! *huggles Distortion and Fragility*
Oh, uh, anyways, my point was....um....I forgot... :o

Actually, it sounds like you're playing by yourself. If that's the case, that may be your problem. Mesmers are a support class, and if you're there all by your lonesome, you're bound to get into trouble! Don't try to be "Everything-All-In-One." It'd be much better if you found a playing style you liked (Domination), based your skills around that style, and find a group that can compliment your abilities.
Thanks for the advice, I came to my senses and stopped trying to make this Mesmer a multi-role tank of destruction and reverted back to a support role of domination with a bit of inspiration to keep my energy reserves up (and the enemies' down).
I read about Cry of Frustration and decided to go back in search of Beetletun to get hold of it. I am quite pleased with it - another tasty interrupt for my arsenal. It does seem to be a bit harder than Power Spike or Drain to activate though - can never quite tell if it's been successful or not? [edit - just realised the activation is 3 times longer than the others]
Any cool Domination and Inspiration skills I should know about?
