first of all i'll start by saying that there's no best way to go. and that this decision has no good answer from anyone cause the proffession you choose depends all on what kinda playing style you got.
then i'll just give some ways for you to make the choice a bit easier. start off by thinking about if you wonna be a main damage dealer or wonna be a support player. If you wonna be damage dealer then Warrior, Ranger or Elementalist is your choice. If you wonna be support then Monk, Mesmer and Necro will probably have your prefferance.
Second you need to ask yourself do i want to go ranged or melee. If you wonna be Ranged then go for Ranger, Elementalist, Mesmer or Necro. Do you want to go melee then Warrior or Smite Monk or your best choice.
Offcourse you can also go melee with a ranger and go ranged with a warrior, but if you want me to state every possibility then you'll probably be even more confused then you already are.
If you can't decide on a primary profession, it's only obvious that you can't find a secondary one either. You need to find something that you enjoy playing. There is no "best" character, although there are more needed characters. Such as monks, but monks are one of those classes where you love to play or you just hate it. I really think in preascalon it's hard to get a feeling about your character. Characters will change and develop differently over time. Take a character and play. See how you like it. If you dont, start another one (you do have 4 slots) until you find something you like. You can delete the others later. About secondaries. Secondaries are generally used to enhance your your primary character. In diablo they called this synergizing. Some who play rangers are also elementalists or monks for conjure xxx or judges insight to boost dmg. Monks generally use secondary classes for energy management in the later parts of the game. Elementalists use echo'ing spells for more dmg or even use their secondary as their primary (e/mo for energy storage, but primarily a monk).

Are you planning on playing only the start of the game? Because whatever you choose in the beginning as a primary profession is what you are for the rest of the game.
All classes are good. Now what you have to decide is what your character wants to do; ranged physical attacks (Ranger), melee (Warrior), spellcasters (Mesmer, Elementalist, Necromancer), or healer (Monk).
I had so much trouble picking a profession it's not even funny. And then I had to pick a second profession? Forget about it! Each combo provides a unique way to experience the story and the only thing that makes one "better" than another is how much you enjoy playing it. The only way you'll know what you enjoy is to just pick one and play it for awhile. And if you have a favorite character class from another game start with that one.
It seems to me that a warrior with any secondary profession would be a good character to start out with to get the hang of the game. Mine was a N/E though so what do I know.
