View Full Version : Unlocking Items... Why?

So last night I discovered that I can make a PvP-Only character, take him to the Tombs, and get into my storage account.
Ok, so... what's the point of unlocking runes and upgrades if I can just buy them from the rune trader, plop them in storage, and then get them out with my PvP-Only character?
Please explain the benefits of unlocking these things. Why do you think it's important?
Sure, if I unlock it then I can start with it right out of the gates, and not have to worry about acquiring it. This is handy for superior vigors n' such.
And once I make my character, and plant my "PvE-acquired" rune in it, if I want to delete the character, I have to hope that the rune salvages out; if I had used an unlocked PvP-Only rune, I wouldn't have that worry.
But still... even with all of that in mind, the commonality of a lot of runes these days seems to make unlocking them less-than-necessary. Lol, so maybe I answered my own question. I'd still like to hear y'all's comments on the subject.
Hmm so you don't have to buy a superior vigor everytime you reroll your build?
If you are going to buy them from the rune trader, you can just take some money out of storage with your PvP character and buy them from the rune trader right there. No need to logout/login/logout/login. :happy34:
Not only are superior vigors too expensive to be risked by expert salvaging frequently but having runes unlocked makes building or rebuilding a character quicker. When you are changing on the fly while in a team, no one wants to wait on you to spec out the character and then go buy runes and apply them.
Finally, you can also unlock weapon upgrades and skills. Some weapon upgrades are hard to come by in PvE and are very expensive when perfect. If you change professions in the desert, skill points become scarce, and maybe you'd rather PvP than slowly roll level 20 and skill capture. Or, maybe you pick a new secondary that you have never played in PvE before and just need a few skills for a new custom build.
Unlocking will not be the best for everyone, but it's a valid option, and I like having choices.

Excellent reply, and good logic. I understand where you're coming from.
This all came into mind last night when I was trying to sell an unidentified superior monk rune. People were calling me all sorts of names for asking 15k for it (I got the 15k btw hehe). They said "you can buy them and put them in storage, so why should I pay you to help me unlock?" I figured the answer was very similar to what you replied, but of course, I wasn't in the mood to explain it all to a complete stranger in LA.
It occurs to me that people wouldn't tend to reroll their PvP characters that much, what with fame, rank and now faction being so slow to earn. But again, the *option* is what's important, and I now believe that unlocking everything that I can is how I'm going to play.
Thanks!

You can't salvage the PvP items (including the armor), likely to prevent someone with a sought after item unlocked (like Sup Vigor) from just creating character after character to salvage the item over and over (either for own usage or to sell).

Aha! Another reason to unlock them. Otherwise, it's a very permanent rune application if you put it on a PvP-Only character. I had no idea.
(Can you tell that I've never made a PvP-Only character? I'm planning on firing one up tonight and seeing what it's all about)
BTW, on a similar note... could I make a PvP-Only character and use it as a "mule" character? I mean, if it can access storage and is already post-searing and has no good use otherwise for its inventory since it's never going out of town and getting any drops. Seems like a good use of a character slot to me... does it work? (watch me going off-topic in my own thread... shameful)

You can do that, it would be advisable to put 2 Bags (expanded with Rune of Holding) and a Belt Pouch on that character (use the Storage to do so). However, if you decide to delete that character (if you want to try another combo for instance) you should be prepared for some time consuming storage transfering.

Fame and rank are universal to all of your characters, so you can make new chars as often as you want and they will have all the fame you have gotten so far. Faction is universal as well, you have to use a PvE to buy stuff with it.
