Well you see it's like this: In the United States you have the system known as imperial measurement but others use metric. And you also have currencies like USD, CDN, Euro, and etc. So when you convert Y gallons per 7.3 barrels at $X.pi … and you carry the square root of the cost of beverages… add 3 litres of ointment … etc. etc. etc. … eventually you come to the conclusion that they’re ripping us off. It’s all lost in the translation unfortunately.
Your best bet is to separate the $X.pi and just eat the pie… your choice of pie of course.
Yay for pie.
I'm comfortable with that. I'll stay home and eat pie.

The price of oil goes down. The price at the pump always goes up. How else can the oil companies expect to outdo the obscene profits from a prior year?

I went to order Spore off amazon, but the reviews are terrible. I generally trust user reviews more then "site" reviews like 1up and the like, so bit of a concern there.
Has anyone actually tried the game yet?
The user reviews are mostly because of the DRM.

Me and my brother went in halfway on it, and I've gotten my $25 out of it. My overall take on it is thus:
1. As a teacher-in-training and a biologist, I'm severely disappointed in the game, as I'd hoped I'd be able to use it for one or two concepts, and the way the game came out, it's highly unfeasible.
2. Gamer-wise, you will like Spore a lot more if you're the sort who can spend hours with a tub of Legos. I literally binged on Spore for about seven hours straight, and I haven't done that in years. The phases aren't quite as horrible as Yahtzee makes them sound (in terms of 'The Biggest Jerk Wins' concept, but he's accurate in that some of the phases feel like they're trying to rip off other games, and failing), but there's less freedom of choice then you'd think (or then I'd like). I personally loved the cell phase (my biology side was giggling about in a manner similar to when I pop in endless ocean), and I feel like this is the closest the game comes to the original demo that Will Wright gave years ago.
The Creature phase loses a little bit of this giddiness, as your creature is a bit more 'this piece gives you X stats' instead of 'your creature can do X because it is built like so. However, if you like to build stuff, this is a fun phase as you can mess around and build whatever you want. I've seen people that have even made an AT-ST walker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0btwvL9CNlA&feature=related), Big Daddy (http://www.spore.com/sporepedia#qry=srch-Big%2520Daddy%3Asast-500008032840), and Charles Darwin himself (http://www.spore.com/sporepedia#qry=sast-500002636196%3Aview-top_rated).
The tribal/Civilization phases are pretty quick, and I've found that you can be done with the Tribal phase in about 15 minutes if you go the peaceful 'Rock Band of Conquest', wherein you impress other tribes with didgeridoos. Civilization is a generally fast affair, and I dislike this phase the most, as it feels the most generic, and temporarily like I'm not really 'in touch' with my race of overly enthusiastic french-bird things (http://www.spore.com/sporepedia#qry=srch-Wikious%3Asast-500045933846) or silly giggling top-hat wearing gremlins (http://www.spore.com/sporepedia#qry=srch-Wikious%3Asast-500053582704%3Apg-20). The space phase is fun and restores my biology side glee what with the terraforming of planets and the requirement for you to put down plants and animals to create a stable ecosystem, or else the terraforming fails and goes back to a lifeless rock. Wars in the space phase can be utterly horrible if they happen early and close to you, as the computer has endless swarms of mooks, and if you don't have a decent weapon, you're literally going to spend the rest of your game fighting off raid after raid. (note: kissing up to hostiles by doing stuff for them and such makes this not happen. Also, for the first time i can remember in a Will Wright game, calling in allies to help actually is an effective strategy, and they WILL conquer things.) Space is also big. REALLY big. Like 'my brother couldn't find a return wormhole and it took him 45 minutes to get back to his empire' big.
And I feel like the DRM isn't that big of a deal, unless you're the type that reformats every six months, in which case it's probably a deal breaker. Overall I'm liking it, even if it's not the super biology game I was hoping for (To quote Yahtzee: Noooooooooooooooooo)
Edit- New Goal, I need to make yahtzee's gremlin thing in Spore

Very much so. All the hype about them last year was annoying, and I'm glad it won't be cropping up this year. I cheered quite loudly (And I wasn't even drunk) when they lost XLII. I hadn't really followed football much after XXXVII, and with the general suckage that the Raiders' have been ever since, but the Giants actually got me watching again last year during the playoffs, so yeah - double sweet win.

Strange? STRANGE? Hmm, strange. Yes, strange would describe my team, a team I've followed since 1964 and saw win the Super Bowl in 1985 but can recount far more losses than victories. This is good, because then I'll have a little more free time (only taking one second term half-semester class), but also tough because there is a LOT of work to do right now.
I'm about 3/4 done with this week's work though, just taking a lunch break since I've just gotten out of class. Hopefully I'll get this all finished in the next two hours!

Okay... new topic...
I am so glad it's finally Fall. The temperature is finally starting to drop a little bit here - it's been in the high 40s or low 50s at night, and 70s during the day.
Anybody else's favorite season Fall?
I'm torn. I have a touch of Seasonal Affective Disorder, and it starts to kick in with the shorter days.
On the other hand, my windows have been open for DAYS. Love. It. It's really beautiful outside.
Nope. Fall means snakes, leaves, crappy theatrical releases, and less sweating. I hate it. Gimme Spring & Summer any day. Winter would be cool too if we ever actually got snow here, but otherwise its just 4 months of cold dreariness.
Domitilde
03-10-2008, 23:53
Autumn is depressing even without SAD as it means Winter is around the corner. The days are shorter, it's getting colder, and then BAM! it's Winter. We had one of the coldest winters on record in Iowa last year and the snow stayed on the ground from November through end of February. And it was tons of snow at that. I'll take Spring and Summer any time. Of course, this years Spring was a 500 year Spring with the rain and flooding of the Midwest, and I'll add it was cooler than normal. It rained almost every other day until mid-June. Then typical of Iowa, it turns into the 90's and humidity to match. 2008 has been rotten. Oh, thanks ReZon for changing the subject to the weather. Maybe the next topics will be religion and politics?
Oh, thanks ReZon for changing the subject to the weather. Maybe the next topics will be religion and politics? :angry:I can do that.
Horray for snow! White Christmases are awesome, and winter is probably my favorite season. ..Until the snow goes slushy, then it bites.
I'm [supposed to be] Catholic but haven't been to church or done anything remotely religiony in many a year. Despite that, I still practice some of the.. morals.. or rites.. or whatever they're called. It's hard to just toss away morals you've grown up with, even if you believe them to be extremely outdated. People around here don't seem to be too into the wait till marriage thing, it's more of a 'buy me a drink and I'll put out' scene. Bleh. >_>
I don't know anything about our own election. I don't really care about politics, and I actually know more about the american election because I can't go two clicks without seeing how Sarah Palin is (apparently) utterly moronic. If you're Canadian, feed me advice on who to vote for. I've heard NDP is looking decent(?) but they've never been big in the Maritimes, so I took that with a grain of salt. *shrugs*
I'm not venturing to share my political affiliation or who I'm voting for or anything, but the Palin bashing passed ridiculous a while back. Over-the-top mockery of any candidate reflects more on the person throwing the barbs, in my eyes.
Kev and I are conservative Christians with a slightly irreverant edge. (We're members of a group called "Mistfit Christians", LOL)
I love Christmas, as a mom, I get a huge kick out of the kids anticipation and excitement. So that's a huge upside to this time of year for me, anticipating the holidays.

Re: Fall.
I'm fan of fall in that it means apple cider, pumpkin pie, pumpkin carving, and the holiday seasons. Not so much of a fan of grey days, they just suck the life out of me over a long enough time. Halloween and Thanksgiving is pretty fun, but Christmas pretty much signals the three months where I'm bloody broke for the duration.
Re: Politics and religion
My short version:
1. I'm pretty much non-religious. Not anti-religious, but I don't really do anything religious either. I just kinda assume that you should be a generally nice person for the sake of being so.
2. Voting Obama. Would've voted McCain in 2000. Despise partisan politics, but also believe that you lose the right to complain if you do not vote.

Politics? I watched the VP debate and decided Biden was the winner because his daughters (grand?) were cuter than Palin's. Don't call me shallow because of this - I did a lot of starring before I made my decision.
Political affiliation? I'm Irish, but to explain McCain, well, he's probably an Orangeman.

I have that true winter except we get ice and then snow on top of the ice until January. Oh, boy, is that fun! Then in January with the famous mid-west winds, we get windchill so bad that your knees feel like they won't work. I need to be retired or rich and have summer and winter homes.
Winter here only goes down to the 20s and 30s at night, rarely is it that during the day. Snow is once or twice every couple of years. It's sad really. But I still love winter - the cold > the heat.

Fall Festival week, Fall Festival week!!! [happydance]
Okay, so every year, the first full week of October, my city has what is supposed to be the second largest street festival in the country (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Side_Nut_Club_Fall_Festival).
The food is completely insane - there's the normal stuff like corn dogs and lemon shake ups, but the weird stuff is kind of a tradition. Brain sandwiches are a big tradition. I've lived here my entire life and never tasted one - I'm just too squeamish. Every year there are a batch of bizarre new offerings: deep fried oreos, chocolate covered crickets, stuff containing ostrich, allligator, and kangaroo meat. (The deep fried Oreos are amazing, but so rich you can only bear to eat one. I've never tried any of those other things.) This year, they are offering up "Pig Lickers", which is chocolate covered bacon, which made me laugh and think of TRUE. My oldest daughter wants to try it. I'm settling for a Ski slushie and a few more traditional things. Kev and I are going for lunch today - we like to have a bit of time down there without trying to keep track of kids.
Friday or Saturday we'll take the kids down there. They'll eat themselves silly and ride the kiddie rides, then stand on the ground while I do this (http://www.nutclub.org/content/view/240/35/), and make jokes about how I'm a lunatic with a death wish. Sigh...they don't know what they're missing, it's awesome.

Those are fun. We usually have exhibitions (as they're called here) through the summer, although the last time I went to one we were on some ride that just spun around while going in a circle, and I got crazy dizzy and felt like I was going to puke for the rest of the day. Sigh.
This weekend is a music festival/Thanksgiving, so no crazy thrill rides for me.

What are corn dogs?
Feeling too lazy to Google it right now.
Whoa, seriously??
From wiki, the source of all things...well, all things ever:
The corn dog or corny dog is a hot dog coated in cornbread batter and deep fried in hot oil, although some are baked. Almost all corn dogs are served on wooden sticks, though some early versions were stickless.
I've never heard it called a corny dog.
I have a friend who used to dip corn dogs in mustard. Since I absolutely HATE mustard, I think this scarred me.
*twitches*
Hm. Mustard. I don't know that I've ever had them except plain, or with ketchup.
We went yesterday and had an amazing lunch, justifying the calories with the fact that we were walking around while eating. I got my Ski Slushie, which was amazing. Now I'm kind of craving a plain old Ski - may have to find a soda machine on the way to work. We visited the food booths that we look forward to every year: some church has a really yummy fish sandwich, another place has white chicken chili, and I have to get these things called French Waffles each year from some high school's booth. Brought those home and shared them with the kids. Took some pics, I may share soon - Kev is uploading them.

All one needs to do is visit the Iowa State Fair and not only find corn dogs, but deep fried versions of every food and snack on the planet, and almost all of it is on a stick... They even had salad on a stick this year.
Just for fun, I went to the Fall Festival "Munchie Map" (Yes, there is a map just for the food) to see what deep fried items they offered this year:
Candy Bars
Caramel Apple Sticks
Cheese Ball
Cookie Dough
Coconut shrimp
Dandelions (?!)
Hot Dogs
Mushrooms
Olives
Oreos
Pineapple
Snickers
Twinkies
Coke (How? I should look into this.)
Donuts
Green Beans
Green Tomatoes
Mac & Cheese
Mozzarella Sticks
Mushrooms
Pickles
Shrimp
Stuffed Olives
Those are just the foods specifically described as fried or deep fried. Nearly everything down there is probably dipped in boiling oil at some point. If you're interested in the full scale of gastronomic horror/delight, take a look (http://www.nutclub.org/images/stories/pdfs/2008munchiemap.pdf).

So hey, remember a while ago I posted a vid of me doing a song that no one heard of before? Well I just recorded a cover of Jonathan Coulton's Skullcrusher Mountain and wanted to post it here because.. uh. I have no other friends? (Ok, not really.) I just think I did an okay job on it (aside from the parts I messed up and it being a bit too high for my voice) but I figured I should post a song that other people might actually know.
So uh. Without further rambling, here you go. (http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b70/a_perfectschism/photographs/me/?action=view¤t=skullcrushermountain.flv)o_O.

Johnathan Coulton is almost like god. I love him so much.
You did a pretty good job. Just try to fight the temptation to let your voice vibrate/twang. I know I tend to do it too much sometimes. Unless you want to be country... Then all the more power to ya.
Just try to fight the temptation to let your voice vibrate/twang.
Yeah, that's the hard part, as here's the kind of music I was raised on (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gK0iMLvCfFM). And actually still am around (and play) that music, such as the aforementioned music festival they're having just down the road this weekend. It's why I have a Martin guitar and an upright bass. ;p
That said, and I know I've mentioned it before, but my preferred music is stuff like progressive metal à la Dream Theater (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNp4tMcpM10) (with their orchestra, ohbaby!), and death metal like Opeth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UpH3qhP_UE)and Nile (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gy-HtLCQw_k). I'm just messing around for now though - I mean that vid was done with something like 20-30 mins practice, I'm sure if I had more time when I'm home I could do better, but for now it's only so long before someone tells me to shut the **** up, so I know it's pretty rough, lol.

I can totally sympathize, shawn. I always let my voice vibrate a bit too much. But once I've warmed up... like an hour or so if I can stand it, then it's not too bad. Been a while since I sang for extended periods of time, though. Used to do a lot of choir and small solos in those choir periods, but now it's limited to Rock Band 2
I appreciate Nile's fascination with Egyptian mythology, but their songs also seem to come up on the shuffle during Sunday morning breakfast. They're not necessarily the best band to listen to first thing in the morning.
I'll try to remember to listen to your song when I get home. Is it as good as those ukelele covers of "Still Alive?"
Rock Band 2
I'm tempted to get a console [other than my DS] just due to Rock Band, but for now it's a good excuse to visit my friends and mooch off their Playstation. >_>

Early morning Nile should at least wake you up pretty well, if nothing else.
Also, I'm not one to strum my own ukelele.. mostly on account of not having one.. (though I may be getting a mandolin soon!) so you'll have to judge for yourself.

I'm going to tell you a story to entertain myself. There is a ESL class (English as a Second Language) here at the church I work at, that meets every Thursday at 10:30 AM. It's a group of Japanese women who's husbands work at Toyota. So they started arriving about a half hour ago. The first one walked in a little ahead of the others, far enough that the outside door closed behind her. She got a very short way down the hall and was just passing my office when the others got to the door from the parking lot. Somehow the door had locked behind the first woman.
So the others, instead of just knocking and waiting five seconds for the woman that they just saw enter the building to open it, they ALL start pounding on the door with their fists, yelling their heads off, and yanking on the handle, rattling the door.
I was sitting at my desk thinking "Maybe I should go make sure there's not a bear or something out there. They're really flipping out." The woman inside turned around and headed back for the door, yelling something in Japanese that, from the tone of it, was "Okay, GEEZ!"
She opened the door to let them in, and they all started calmly chatting about something as they walked back by my office.
If I ever go to Japan, I need to study up on the etiquitte for encountering a locked door, because it's apparently not what I'm used to.

Kind of funny to me, I'd never heard of him until I saw him at PAX last year, and now he's spontaneously everywhere.
Code Monkey is my favorite song by him.I was debating covering that one or Mandlebrot Set as well as the one I did. The latter's chorus is incredibly tricky to get right, lyric-wise. "Let Z be Z1 squared plus C, and Z2 is Z1 squared plus C.."

Btw, it really depends on who I am working with. I gauge people on their slackness by jokingly saying "alright, breaktime, what book do you want me to get you to read?" To which, surprisingly, the average answer has been "haha, what bookstore are you working for? Come on, let's straighten the shelves again!"

Virgin Media went down in the Newcastle area for cable customers for a couple of days. What they failed to point out when I phoned them was that it wasn't just cable customers that were affected (I'm on ADSL), nor was it just the two Newcastle postcodes they'd listed (I live about half and hour to an hour's drive from that city so my postcode doesn't even start with NE). So I was cut off completely and spent those two days frantically trying to get the bottom of it, and was even going to resort to taking my DS into McDonalds just to get here if it continued to stay down. :undecided:

You're just jealous!
So since the holiday season is approaching, the bookstore has opened its annual calendar store in the mall. It's painful to work in, because nobody really wants a stupid calendar yet.
I worked the other day from 1-9 in there (with about two hours back in the bookstore - my boss isn't that cruel), and it was a grueling task. On the list of things we cannot do while working in the calendar store are: No sitting, no talking on the phone, no reading. So basically, you stand there bored. I looked at the back of just about every calendar in the place on Saturday.
Today however, I am bringing my Nintendo DS (*rechecks rules*, yep that should be alright... ).
It's my wife's old brick DS, since I would be really upset if anything happened to my Lite.
Wish me luck!
You can't...sit? You just stand there for 8 hours, until you completely implode from boredom? Good grief, I'm so sorry.
You can't...sit? You just stand there for 8 hours, until you completely implode from boredom? Good grief, I'm so sorry.
Can't sit at the bookstore either - which is fine when you've got people to interact with and work to do. But the calendar store is empty about 95% of the day, and will be that way until after Thanksgiving most likely. Fortunately, I don't have to work in there everyday. Everyone has to take a turn.
My biggest problem today will be which game to bring with me to keep me entertained.

Have you heard of Puzzle Quest: Galactrix (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puzzle_Quest:_Galactrix) or Puzzle Kingdoms (http://www.gamesradar.com/wii/puzzle-kingdoms/preview/puzzle-kingdoms-is-super-hardcore/a-20080909134741237065/g-20080729163119669078)?
Both are developed Infinite Interactive (though Galactrix is actually being published by D3).
I was going to write Infinite Interactive, but D3 rolls off the tongue better.
Heard of Galactrix, not sure about it.
Looks too different I think. Maybe when a demo's released I'll give it a go.
Not heard of Puzzle Kingdoms before. It looks interesting, if a little complicated.
I notice however that neither are due this year.
Especially once my character's knocked up and my doggy is like, uber awesome.
You're going to get your character pregnant? Wow, you're a fast mover Snow.

I just find the potential for a female PC character to get pregnant in an RPG to be innovative and make it far more realistic.
There are condoms, though! The prostitutes have been working on them.

I hope there's a +3 Perambulator of Winnowing, or something similar in the game. It's going to really cramp your style, dragging that kid around with you otherwise.

Or multiple!

Could have a new skill "charm baby", then you could evolve it through to "dire toddler". Main attack "tantrum".
Holy cow, that's a terrifying skill.

Not if its anything like when my kids throw a tantrum.
Laura crosses her arms, sits down, and has this look like "I hate the world and especially YOU" on her face, with that little lip poking out....so cute.
I was a dire toddler.

Not surprising.

Re: tantrums:
One of my earliest childhood memories is my mother getting down on the ground and throwing a tantrum right next to me when I did. I was so horribly confused by it I can't remember throwing a whole lot of other ones.

There isn't a job in the world that could pay me enough to work 24hours, 7days a week. You need another vocation.

Hmm, stuck implies not able to leave the building for any considerable amount of time... No thanks, I didn't buy a nice house for nothing!
Hauling two toddlers around when one isn't exactly walking great (still) yet in the middle of cold weather isn't my idea of fun either.

Okay, off topic mental exercise for people. I'm making an RPG character that's ripping off Viewtiful Joe and Captain Falcon. Any suggestions for
1. Hero name?
2. Cheesy transformation line?
I'm thinking stuff along the lines of so-bad-they're-good action movies.

Apparently the first time in about seventy years since we've had snow in October.
In your face global warming. IN YOUR FACE!!
Wow, nice! I'm more of a warm weather girl, but I'm glad for you. Also? Keep it! Keep it all!
I mentioned in guild chat the other night, that last December, I was lying under a palm tree in a bathing suit. I'm going to think of that this December, and be really bummed out. (Unless we win the lottery and I head down to FL again.)

It rarely ever snows here in Holland that early in the year. We usually have 10-15 white days a year, but that's usually in December/January.

I have gotten out the scrapper and there was ice in the pickup bed today.
On another note - we bought the Blu-ray 3D version of Polar Express yesterday and watched it last night. It is really good. It's amazing how it came to life in 3D.

One or a few white days? That's all? We go months without seeing anything but white. Because I have no kids, I have a snow blower. That's a contraption you probably aren't familiar with.

I don't have a snow shovel... Last winter, I had to get up at 7 on Sunday morning in order to be able to make some pictures of our house in the snow. And that was the first and last opportunity in 2 years...

Really? I'd have expected more days of snow in the north..being it colder and such. Usually the ponds and canals freeze earlier there where you live.

I'm a fan of the one on top, it's a richer colored purple.
I like the bottom one because the armor seems more detailed that way.

You believe you picked up a trojan from an image thread? Not quite following.
* Bottom looks like its been faded to me, I'd go with the top. But then I don't really care for that armor.
