View Full Version : Necromancer Wallpaper (Work In Progress)
Thought it would be fun to design some wallpapers with a theme. So I went around to "necroesque" areas this evening and snapped some screenshots. Coupled them with my character (Sorrow Seed) and some of her minions. Did some quick and dirty blending (which I'm not quiet happy with yet) and came out with a necromancer wallpaper. I will most likely change the background some, but I think this is a good point to get some feedback, or at least distribute it for whoever wants.

(The following is all based on my personal opinion. I'll try to be as constructive as I can)
I'm sorry mate, but I'm gonna have to be a prick and give you the thumbs down on this one.
The area you've blended in in the middle of the background really looks out of place. It just didn't blend right with the image of the ruins above it. I suggest using a larger brush (The soft 300 should do fine) to soften up the cuts and make it blend in better.
The Necromancer doesn't blend in with the middle area either, you should've used a sharper tool to cut her out and then softened it up a little. Now it just looks out of place.
The Necromancer herself also looks like she stands out too much. You've probably left her like she was on the original screenshot, but the sharp image just doesn't look right with the softfocussed backgrounds. I suggest using a soft focus effect on her. This is easily done by copying the layer she's on, doing a Gaussian Blur (Filter->Blur->Gaussian Blur) with a 5-10 pixel range on the top layer and then changing the top layer's opacity to your own taste. The image will still remain sharp, but it will have a dream-like effect on it called Soft Focus.
The minions look okay, but I can tell that you simply took 2 pictures of them and duplicated them. It really takes away from the image. I also suggest using some effects on them, such as making their weapon-arms look stained with blood or making a bit of blood drip from between their ribcages. Perhaps you could even try to draw an eye on one of them and give it a neat little glow, or give one an amputated arm. If you really want a challenge, try taking a picture of one in a battle position, with it's weapon-arm raised. Just make them look a little more distinctive from one another.
On a more positive note, the text looks fine, and I like the way you've filled the bottom of the screen with it.
The color scheme really fits with the Necromancer, although I suggest doing something about the cape on your character. You could either remove it or change the color scheme a little bit (In Photoshop ofcourse).
Still, like you've said though, it needs work. It's good you're not happy with the blending, because to be honest, it looks like nothing to be happy about at the moment.
Just fix some of the issues and perhaps add a few more creative touches and you'll have a top notch wallpaper.
By the way, weren't you the guy I played FoW with a this morning? You know, in a pure Necromancer group? I'm sorry I dropped out, my connection was lagging like hell. Not the normal 'screen freezes'-lag, mind you, but the scary as **** 'time freeze cuz you're losing connection'-lag. Well, I decided to beat the connection loss and disconnected myself before my character ran out of control to aggro the entire Fissure...

I did in fact have 4 minions in the picture, they were being cut off by my character though so I couldn't isolate them as a whole unit. Which I why I opted for erasing them and duping the two on the far sides. I like your idea of going with one in a battle position, I'll see if I can cap the shot later today. You're also right on the lack of modification on the PC. The hues don't really match on her, which is something I didn't notice while working on it last night, but seems very prominent when I look at it now.
I think my issue with the background isn't so much trouble blending it, but that I really didn't know what I was going for. I've got a slightly better idea now so I think I can start with a fresh blend tonight and see about working the images together a bit better.
On the cape. Yes, I wish I could remove it entirely instead of just change it. Luckily we'll hopefully be getting cape toggles in the near future so I can try again. Until that point, I'll see what I can do with it.
I've got a few other shots I didn't use in this picture, particularly of a nice bone dragon (which I couldn't get to fit in here very well, so I scrapped it), and an area in the Isle of the Dead guild hall. Perhaps I'll go with the Isle picture and see if it will combine better with the colors for the entrance to the UW instead of The Veil.

I think you did a great job!
Much, MUCH better mate. The minions look nice, at least they are now much more distinctive. The character blends in with the enviroment nicely, and most importantly, you got rid of that horrible un-blended piece in the middle. I also like the addition of the dragon head, although it could have been slightly bigger, it doesn't quite fill the area much.
There's an infinite amount of improvement on the last version, and that's always good. Thumbs up, mate. :happy34:
EDIT: I just saw you did something about the Guild cape too. Very nicely done. :)

That is Glint's head from the statue in Droknar's Forge.
The head looks like Glint or her Facets.
