Umm I can get into the forums but when I try to get into homepage, it says I got banned. I don't think I did anything bad to get banned but what happened? If the mods know anything about it please help me.

An Admin will need to look into this. I just checked the ban list are you are not on it. Also, the fact that you can post on the forums means you haven't been banned.

As Mawgleah said, if you were banned, you wouldnt be able to post ;) In any case, what do you mean by "get into the homepage"? The http://forums.gwonline.net page or the http://gwonline.net page?

We dont have a way to ban you from viewing that site. Can you copy the exact message you are getting and paste it here, please?

Edit - Doesn't seem to be working. Works at geocities though. Well it has the Loaded Inc. bar at the top and right below it, it simply says "You are banned."

I've found that imageshack.us is a good site for hosting images - it even gives you the exact text to drop a hotlinked thumbnail straight into these forums. You should be able to host your screenshot there.

That being said, I can still access your screenshot. All I had to do is copy the URL for the image and paste it into a new window. Geocities has blocks in place to prevent people from hotlinking images from other sites, to prevent them and their bandwidth from being used as a repository for the images for every other site on the net. However, a fresh window or tab calling it up with no referrer pulls it up just fine.

EDIT: You might also want to bring your browser up to date, as I see it needs one by the screenshot. See that red arrow in the upper right hand corner? Click on it, and it should bring the update window up. I don't know if it will make a difference or not, but hey, it may be that one thing that solves your problem. Even if it doesn't solve this, it's still a good idea.

I still cant see it doing that... Is there a way you can snatch it and host it on imageshack, Loki?

Do you know why and how I was banned, though?

We dont have a way to ban you from viewing that site. You may want to check your security settings because it is simply not possible to be blocked from http://www.gwonline.net from the server side. You don't login so there is no way for the server to authenticate your identity, unlike the forums. Are you using a workstation computer or home PC? Have you tried using IE as well as Firefox?

Viewing the image on geocities worked fine for me.
But I've downloaded it anyway, converted to jpg and put it up with imageshack.

HTH :D

I would, but it seems someone using an un-garbled version of my avatar has beat me to it ;)

Buffalo Chip: As I understand it, your account has not been banned from gwonline. The main site, www.gwonline.net, does not have normal user accounts as you are used to in the forums, which you might notice reside at forums.gwonline.net. I'm thinking something about how you are accessing the site is triggering an error message to appear on the main site. Just some of the possibilities:

1) Your browser is out of date, and the web server doesn't like it. Not that likely, but easy enough to fix to check out - just update your browser, as I have pointed out earlier.

2) You are accessing through an abusive proxy. This would mean your IP, as far as the site is concerned, would show up as the proxy's IP address, and if that proxy was involved in a DOS attack or soething, it might be banned on the server level. I would think, though, that if this were the case, then none of the style info would get through, which it obviously has. Therefore, this isn't likely either.

3) Malware - maybe you have some malware/spyware installed on your system. Do a full virus scan on your computer, then scan for ad/malware with AdAware and SpybotSD. Both are good, free programs, easily Googleable. I'll even post URLS later, if a mod reading this thread wants to approve it.

4) Something else - a lot of what we're doing in this thread is trying to get more info, to figure out what the problem is. it migt be something else, but we don't know yet.

Side note / suggestion to the mods : Can we get a list of pre-approved links? It would be nice if we could point users to certain friendly websites, where they can find things like AdAware and SpyBot, or maybe to non-GW specific Wikipedia articles when appropriate. Is this possible? If need be, I can work this up into a formal suggestion later, with a list of sites I'd like to be able to use, and rules to go along with them.

I thought about asking that in response to another thread but, ahem, forgot, It would be useful in light of the (IMHO) overly Draconian disallow (or, at least, serious frowning upon) of external linking.

As long as it doesn't link to another GW fansites' content and/or pornographic material of any kind, they links should be OK.

Yes, and that's what I have gone by in the past, but unfortunately, I've come back to find these edited by moderator, stating that the link is ok this time, but in the future should be pre-approved. Not wanting to rack up points on someone's hiddne "3 strikes" list, I've since just been telling people how to find most things, such as extolling the virtues of Google, particularly when used with certain keywords in the search box. :happy53:

I would just make a list, and PM it to a mod for future use, but I know others would find this useful as well. Thus, I bring it up here, in a forum thread.

I think I'm going to put a few together for you in a PM to start with, and then go create a thread in the support forum for it. Then, for future reference, we can refer others to a decent list of approved links.

Actually, such a thread would be very nice, since I've just though of another use for such a thread. Right now, should someone need approval for a link, they need to submit it to a mod first, but there is no convenient way to submit it to all mods, and you just have to make your best guess. This thread could be a general receptacle for links awaiting approval, and then it can be aproved or denied by the first mod to see it, as opposed to whenever the one you submit it to gets around to approving it (maybe when they get back from vacation...)

Anyways, we are now digressing from the original topic of this thread. I'm going to get to doing what I just said I would do....

Really, and who would that be? :innocent0

No, seriously, I jumped in because, judging by the timestamps on both your and Fallen's posts, I'm in a different timezone, and thus would be able to host the image earlier.
This would IMHO aid to the search for the mysterious error as it would enable other users to start brainstorming in advance.

I hope I didn't step on anyone's turf though ;)

Oh, no worries... I wasn't expressing any annoyment about postig the image... ;) besides, not only am I in a different time zone, but I'm a late riser, so ya did right.

And about the avatar - that's ok, keep it with my blessing (not that ya need it). Just means I gotta move on to my next one, which I was thinking about doing anyways...

I knew I saw my avatar somewhere here before, but the penny didn't drop that it was you. :D
Sorry if I appeared to have 'stolen' it, but since my previous avatar got scrambled, I decided to copy one that I use on another forum.
If you want it back, I'll switch to something else.

Anyway, back on topic:

Buffalo Chip, have you been able to get on the main site?
And have you tried any of Loki's suggestions, or the the problem 'fix' itself?

Close... there are sticky forums that refer to places to download Drivers, and for combatting Malware, but that doesn't cover everything. One example I mentioned was Wikipedia. Say we're in a discussion about comparative pet sizes, and I want to link to a Wikipedia article that contains the exact definitive info we are discussing, for example. Just things like that.

Er, topic.. um, yeah, OP, as soon as you try those steps and report back the results, we can progress with any troubleshooting that needs to be done... yeah.

There is something wrong with my Firefox. I tried IE and it worked fine. I'll just use IE to get into this site.
