Okay, I enjoy a good anime as much as the next guy.
But I am extremely disappointed in the fact that A-Net clearly modeled one of the Male Assassin's hairdos after the embarassing popularity of Naruto. As an anime fan, I *cringed* when I saw the headband.

Naruto is a poor fanboy-driving anime, much like DBZ was five yeas ago. I'm not saying it's a terrible show, but I am immensly worried about seeing mass amounts of unoriginal Assassin creations with names referencing the anime and 70% of all new Assassins wearing that headband. I don't mind if you like Naruto but I don't want to see all the 14-year-olds who play GW suddenly pretending to be their favorite character from the show.
Dear ANet, let Guild Wars be Guild Wars. Don't give in to the popularity of other things such as anime and the immature, fanboyish requests by legions of kids to make YOUR game anything like something else. We've already seen countless threads where people discuss the Assassin character and include assumptions and biases that are obviously based off the poster's anime knowledge as opposed to knowledge of actual real-life ninjas/assassins.
Please get rid of the "Narutard" headband and replace it with something more original!

I've seen just about every possible lame variation of Legolas you could think of at this point. The only one that was amusing was Laginless SomenameIcan'trecallnow.
And Link. Let's not forget Link, though not nearly as common I think.

The only problem i can really see with Naruto is delaying, its even worse than Dragonball Z's power up "constipation" stalling for 10 episodes. The characters and plot aren't bad, its just that it takes 15 episodes for what would probably be about 10 minutes.
I just don't see the difference, what with between Sephiroth, R.Salvatore characters, Legolas and such - Yes, the amount of Naruto name spoofs will be absolutely staggering, but it isn't terribly different than what there is now, except the part where people are going to start spamming konnichi wa, desu, san/sama, and other common Japanese words phrases. Its been pretty evidently shown during the two faction previews. Only problem is since Naruto characters tend to use alot of very common names and words for fantasy characters, it is going to be a tad hard differenciating. Come on, Sakura? Sasuke? I've seen names like those mentioned in loads of places.

Yeah... mostly because Sakura and Sasuke are reasonably common real-life Japanese names.
The other ones you mention, Salvatore & so on, yeah... I get kinda tired of those too. All the "Rannd Al Thor" and the other Robert Jordan clones.
Oddly enough, one writer I've seen very little of in this game, despite some of the overwhelming similarities (to an extent) is Stephen Erikson. I've seen only a handful of names from his books, which surprises me somewhat.
Fortunately I haven't seen any Frodo's yet, thank Grenth
okay... ive got several problems with ur original post, first of all ppl with naruto names are gonna be no different than warriors named aragorn, rangers named legolas, etc. there will always be popular names, unoriginal yes, trouble for u? no, second headbands arent just used by naruto characters, and finally its fine to say u dont like a series but u're going ridiculously overboard its popular for a reason, im not supporting ppl with the same names but if it makes them happy then all the power to them

I'm aware of this, but I feel like until Factions is officially released, there's a chance to keep it from happening again. I'd much rather minimalize the naruto clones. I can't put a stop to the Legolases, but I can try to warn Anet about the dangers of creating Narutos.
trouble for u? noActually, yes. Sure, it doesn't directly hamper my ability to play the game, but it dramatically affects the fun factor of the game.

I'm not saying the Naruto anime "created" that style of headband, because I can't say that for certain, but I CAN say for certain that 100% of the people who have ever seen the show or even just pictures of the characters will imediately associate it with Naruto. Cue fanboys.

I watched the first 50 episodes on imported Japanese DVDs a year before it came to America, and rather enjoyed it. It's just that if ANet really wants to make an allusion to something like anime, i'd rather it be to something a little less-known and be more subtle about it.

if u have less fun because of someone else's name well... i just find that sad maybe thats just me if they enjoy it good for them why should i care? again in response to ur remark about headbands, unless u see a konoho leaf on the headband its not naruto, u can see in many games, animes, elsewhere, ninjas wearing headbands, as for u liking something a little less known well thats fine, but if a majority of ppl prefer naruto style characters than i think that warrants choosing that over the preferences of the minority

I find it sad that you don't see the problem. It's not just their name. It's the entire attitude and atmosphere. Things I also find sad include people not even trying to be original and your typing.

I actually disagree with you on this because of a single reason - head bands (not exactly like those) are very common in a lot of animes, not only Naruto. I would say that Naruto is copying that feature from a lot of previous animes and mangas that were released a lot before it, and that Arena Net isn't copying Naruto - they're mentioning a very common thing in animes, but among those the (currently) more popular one is Naruto, so many people will link both things together.
It's the same thing than, say, if the Assassin had a powerful projectile attack that takes some time to be charged. Many people into anime would look at it and scream "OMG Dragon Ball Z!", but that's a common feauture in a lot of animes, from Saint Seiya to all the way back to the live action shows such as Specterman. The reference itself is old - people just associate it with the most popular thing linked to it.
(And I could go on a long tangent about how a "popular" anime like Naruto and Dragon Ball are basically a copy of many animes that came before them, just like WoW is a copy of all the MMORPGs that came before it. It's no wonder that many of the stereotyped features of such genres are seen in the things I mentioned - that's part of their appeal for some people.)

You can make an assassin that looks almost exactly like Kakashi from Naruto. . .you can get almost the exact hair style, the color, and his brokeass eye.

But being realistic, it's near impossible to say people aren't going to immediately think Naruto, or even that Naruto isn't what Anet had in mind. Simply removing the metal plate on the headband or even changing the shape of the metal plate would satisfy me, as it wouldn't be a clear copy.

That's my point. When you've got kiddies running around pretending to be anime ninjas, squeeling lines such as the one I mentioned, you'll know not to party with them, because chances are, they aren't smart.
I don't want people doing that, but as a joke I agreed that being able to tell who's smart and who's immature is an advantage to this whole thing.

Yes, it is far simpler. Someone who mashed his keyboard and/or only had the attention span of the last show he watched/the only show he watches from which to draw a name from is far more likely to be someone I would want in another group then mine.

If you're too lazy to think up a decent name for a characther you'll spend 300 hours on, get away from me. If you don't care about your own name, you prolly don't care about the group. If you can't think of anything else, you probably also stole your build idea, in which case, again, away with you.
I'm not saying this is what happens ALL the time, but if I get to avoid 90 idiots and 1 decent person with a name scheme like that, it's a chance I'm willing to take.

I named my assassin during the PVP weekend and FPE, Oturan Uzumaki. Weither it's a dumb anime in all of your eyes or not. I think it's an awsome series. Never have I watched a show that could start you out at hateing some one and then respecting them within a few episodes later. I dig the series and it's no DBZ at all. DBZ is all about constepation once they get into the SS stages.... Yes, I watch anime dubbed to so hah!

*sigh* IT IS INEVITABLE as you said but the one that have most time playing is those anime brats. And it hardly have any chance of reducing the threat cause most people have reserved the names b4 the faction released (their free slot or PVP slot).
In Anet point of view, what is the better marketing strategy asides following the trend. I suspect the assasin class designer have few naruto fans within them. Hell, even the warrior's faction armor have some Dynasty Warrior feel to it.

Just to piss all of u guys off, I'm gonna make an assassin that looks exactly like Kakashi. I'm gonna give him that headband, the white spikey hair, and give him that scarred face with the wierd eye. Just remember to look for a character with Kakashi in it, it might just be me.

Oturan is Naruto spelled backwards and Uzumaki is the family name of the hero, in other words it is not less common its the main hero's name in reverse writing.
Could you honestly tell me that if you had a way to have your toon look like your favorite anime character you wouldn't do it? If you can't then you have no right making a judgment on desings placed by ANet and if you can then you should not call yourself an Otaku :grin:
Let everybody enjoy his game like he wants to, I prefer to have all the kids playing an assassin deriving their name from Naruto however cheap that may be than chosing names who would feel offending to some, my guess is we're gonna see quite a few Kamui derivatives as well as other game/anime assassin names.

You know, during the last PVP-Factions-weekend I noticed a similarity between my Assassin and Solid Snake, the main Character from the Metal-Gear-Solid games.
If carefully viewed Snake is in some kind a ninja too (the full explanation of this would be just too confusing).
I am no fan of this Naruto stuff, quite the opposite.
One of my friends is infected, too, and he could not explain me up to now what is so the good at Naruto, I think it is terrible. :)

I am glad that Guild Wars artists know their stuff and do not overdo. They did a great job merging all that medieval/greek/roman/barbarian/fantasy archetypes with a little bit manga style together in Prophecies.
Remember the way assassins ran in the first preview? This was over the top, and it got corrected to a more upright posture, still retaining this look.
I still think especially the male assassin could use some more facial as well as hair styles and a bit more of a western/asian mix look for the face/hair selection.
But what is the point of this thread at all.
As much as you cannot make me stop reading tons of SciFi and Fantasy novels I could not convince a dear friend that Naruto is not good for him.
There are also lots of players with outright offensive names and behaviour, they are much worse than a Naruto fan.
We will learn to live with Naruto fans, and they will learn to live with the fact that not everybody likes Naruto.
I think we can also live with their headband, they could add some more faces though.
My little brother plays guild wars and happens to love Naruto. (He's 11) I also love the series. (I am 25) We've made several characters that resemble Naruto characters, just for the fun of it.
It's a point of amusement to find that someone has a problem with the way someone else enjoys playing there game.
This isn’t a flame, but take into account that not everyone who plays this game is mature or even older. And what I do not want to see if some little kid getting flamed (My little brother included) simply because he wants to show enthusiasm for a show he really likes.
Handle it like any other mature person and let it go my friend.

It's majorly simple. If I try to avoid people with stupid names, I end up avoiding some stupid people too.
Sadly, I don't always end up avoiding stupid people, and I sometime get a stupid person with a good/decent name. But considering I just recently did Elona's reach with two henchies, a ranger, dual warriors and my level 13 necro in pre searing armour (mostly since they actually LISTENED to me), I stay by my rules on what group will work and which one will fail; miserably at that.
