View Full Version : Forums inordinately slow?

The GWOnline forums have been near unacceptably slow for me for a week or so now. It takes around a minute for a page to START to display.

I've found at least part of the problem. Before the page starts to display, the browser wants to load this file: http://adverts.loadedinc.com/adx.js'

Unfortunately, that server is down and so the connection must timeout before the GWOnline forums can load. This doesn't seem to be a problem just today, but it seems to be especially troublesome today. Is it just me, or are a lot of people having this issue?

EDIT: NM. Looks like the adverts issue is solved after I posted this, but the "waiting for response" time is still very slow. Is it just because of the number of people online due to factions?

I have the exact same problem, the browser tries to connect there, and only loads the forum when the connection times out.

edit:
It still tries to connect to that ad site, but it goes very slow for the forums some days when that site seems to have problems. Which is very often.

For the past couple of weeks it's been pretty bad. I only surf the forums when I absolutely need to find certain information.

Try moderating with the forums like this. That's one reason things are getting out of hand in some active forums, we're having the same problems and can't keep up.

I'm moving this thread over to forum support. If it feels like going there, that is...

Its been slow lately due to extremely high traffic Id be willing to bet. The last 3 - 4 days when Ive logged on to the site there have been 550+ people on this forum alone.

My apologies, didn't see this forum when I made the thread. The problem with the ad site is actually intermittent. Right now for me, the javascript file DOES load. Well, sort of. I get a 404, but that's better than a connection timing out and not letting the forums display.

yes the quality of the service for the forum is "poor"
also but this is off topic I disagree with having porn ads n the forums
i saw there were some the other day they've gone now but still wether porn is good or bad has no incidence on the fact that if this site claims to be about guildwars it shouldnt show porn

I have no problems with this site, Im using Firefox since before I registered here.
It IS extremely slow, though - I thought its because of the massive traffic due to Factions release and/or MM nerf.

Similar but related issue - the scrolling "Latest news" thing on the top of the page often takes up 100% of CPU for some reason (buggy Firefox maybe). Noticed today that "Latest news" box is a static text now...

First off, this is a free forum. You arent required to pay to be here. Add to that the fact that we host a network of forums on one server, including very popular WoW and Dii sites. When one site gets a lot of traffic, the other sites suffer a bit because of it. We are working on a remedy (i.e. new server), and that should speed things up.

As for the ads: We are not in complete control of our ads. When a "porn" ad pops up, take a screenie of it, email it to paul@loadedinc.com so that we can get them off our servers. Our ad agency knows that we do not want those ads, but sometimes they slip through, and we have to let them know.

People who do what you just did irritate me... You state some shortcomings of something, but offer no other info whatsoever, just your disapproval. Bothers me to no end...

The new server should be in an ready for us today. Rush is expecting the log ins sometime tonight so he can set to getting the GW moved over. It's our priority to get GWO moved and running faster asap.

The adverts we have here are not pornography. They're using sex to sell in the same way Magnum ice lollies do or any number of adverts for any number of products in any number of mediums. Some of the adverts have been gratuitous in my opinion (i.e. a pair or boobs (in a bra) only) and we've asked for these to be curb. Mainly because they're naff, not that I have anything against body parts. However, adverts showing a women languishing invitingly to sell a dating agency will not be blocked. If you do see a pornographic advert (either naked man or lady bits) then please take a screenshot and also the url it goes to. This will help us track down the agency who is serving it and have it pulled.

Please remember this site is aimed at young adults (16 and over), anyone younger than that views the content here at their own discretion, or rather should be asking their folks if they can come here.

It's irrelevant what this site is about, or any of our other game sites, the advertisers are interested in the demographic as they are with any publication. What would you have us carry ads about? Guild Wars strategy manual? Not going to happen. The only advertising ANet has taken out with us is for GWs and that was on the other sites (to lure away fans of those other games).

Anyway, the main point here being the slowness of the forums since the increase in traffic over the past 4 weeks and as I say, a nice shiny new server is in place, waiting for the GWO membership. In the meantime hang in there and thanks for everyone's patience.

I just noticed the GWOnline site going down for a few moments.... and now it's suddenly faster!

Much thanks is due to the administrators! You guys have really gone above and beyond the call of duty for a free site.

I *think* the "latest news" uses Java. (not script)
Perhaps youve got the "wrong" Java engine installed?
(Note: "wrong" because apparently several Java engines(from Sun) are not really working the same - Ive had sites/programs that wouldnt work with version XY, but with version XY-1(i.e. the previous version).)
[edit]Just checked - Im using Java version 1.4.2_08 - no problems with the site.

I visited this forum just few days ago and i found it quite slow. After this downtime it seems much faster. I just want to thank the team and say that they did a great job so far!

If you guys check the main page, you will see that our host was doing network maintenance, and thats why we were so slow. Things are getting better now, though :D

Forums are on the new server now so if you're reading this it means your ISP has refreshed their DNS and it's now point to this new IP.

So, verdict? For me it's faster than <insert name of fast thing here>. Hope it's improved as much for others :cloud9:

Yeap, its really perfect now. Good job. By the way, changing server means changing the hoster?

Just colocation facility. We'll move the rest over when our contract here runs out and after E3. Rush is going to E3 so it's too much to get the move done before because you need to monitor it closely for a few days after to iron our any probs.

None of this should effect you guys though because it's the other sites that are yet to be moved.

Traders should go faster now too because it doesn't have to share the box with the GWO forums. Hopefully both with be more enjoyable to use.

sry i didnt mean to be rude allthough i can see in retrospect how it seems it.

I was just annoyed that it was slow and then when i saw the adult ads showing women in underwear i got annoyed at the people who put them there! sry

the one I saw the other day was. I know now after what fallen said that it is not your fault. But even though it was may be soft porn it still constituted porn. it was for a dating service and it was obvious by the fact that it said "looking for men" and the persons in it were half naked.
porn doesnt ofend me but it can be annoying when people like your advertiser introduce it into a site which one would think is ok for teenagers just so they can make a bit of extra cash even if they have to apologise later to the site mods.

btw the new host is so fast. I have never found a faster forum i think

I am noticing the forums are slow too, for the past several days they have been slow and today is the first day they are actually going fast. gwonline.net itself tho is still slow, causing timeouts with firefox or 1 min+ load times (timed with fasterfox). Whatever you did to the forums to speed them back up, do it to the main site and the databases too please!

OK spoke too soon, the forums are back to their slow selves just like the rest of the site
